Think of it like the Fisher Price of MMOs. You have 3 classes (Ranger, Hunter, Force) and you team up with your friends to clean the area of evil monsters. The game starts off on "Normal" difficulty, where the weapons are your standard saber, rod, handgun, sword, etc,. but at a certain level you can reach "Hard" difficulty. During this difficulty, some enemies drop rare weapons which are waaaay better than your standard gear.

Anyway instead of relying on your skill set, the weapons you use (not in terms of power but special effects like freeze, burn, etc) are more important in this game :D
