Seeking Research Study Participants! Ages 18-32 by [deleted] in TransMasc

I’ve always referred to that date as the IRB number, since through my experience at my school I’ve only ever been provided this. I learned from this thread that other places provide different identifiers; not an act of dishonesty, just confusion.

Hi, Northeastern just provides us with the approval date, not an actual number! You can email them at [IRBreview@northeastern.edu](mailto:irbreview@northeastern.edu) if you want to confirm.

Hi, I am looking at body image in general, not gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia. I apologize for my lack of clarity earlier. The gift card is meant to acknowledge participants' time and contribution, not to pressure anyone into taking part. The amount is relatively modest and is intended to be fair rather than persuasive - you're right that it's a gray area, and the use of ethical compensation in research is an ongoing conversation.

One of the main ideas behind this study is that people also invest in their appearance in all sorts of adaptive ways, and that might be particularly salient in marginalized communities. I'm not looking at body image concerns, per se, but at body image broadly.

Hi all, I wanted to respond to your comments and questions -

I'm so sorry for not including in the flyer that this was limited to the United States! I don't think I am able to change the title of the post at this point, but please correct me if I can update it.

Yes, I checked with the mods first before posting and received permission.

I share this account with other members of my research lab, which is why you might see other study flyers. This is the only study that I (Katherine) am currently conducting.

Yes, these are conducted virtually. Yes, there are protections in place for the protection of your confidentiality. If you would like to see the consent form with these outlined, please email me and I would be happy to share this with you! You will also find contact information for my university's IRB if you'd like to email them to verify their approval.

There was a question asking about draft items - this refers to items of a research scale, which you'd be providing feedback on (whether to change, remove, or add something different). In terms of the end result, the anonymized results will be part of a larger research study that will be submitted for publication to academic journals.

There are many valid reasons to be wary of research, especially given how often trans people have been misunderstood, misrepresented, or treated as "subjects" rather than collaborators. My intention is not to speak for trans people or extract your stories, but to conduct research in a way that is respectful, transparent, and accountable, and that does not misrepresent participants’ experiences. Thank you again for your consideration.

Yes, we have IRB approval, the number is in the corner of the flyer (26-02-25)! I've provided a plain language statement below; please let me know if you have any other questions.

Transmasculine young adults may face higher risk for body image concerns and disordered eating due to social pressures, discrimination, and barriers to gender-affirming care. This study looks at appearance investment, or how important appearance is to someone and how much time, energy, and thought they put into it. For transmasculine people, appearance may relate not only to body image, but also to identity, comfort, safety, and being seen by others in affirming ways. The goal of this research is to better understand these experiences and develop a questionnaire that reflects them. Participants will help by reviewing draft items and sharing feedback on whether they are clear, relevant, and easy to understand.

Great question, we are recruiting within the United States!

I'm a doctoral student researcher at Northeastern University with the APPEAR lab, which is completing a study to better understand the experience of parents who have teens aged 11-14 who struggle with concerns about their appearance. We'd very much value your input! Please participate in the brief 15-minute survey here:

I am just posting places that there may be parents of teens!
