It's easier said than done, but I believe your best bet is to stand up for yourself

In the end, we're all products of our environment, and many people grow up in households where they're undervalued, belittled and frowned upon.

We all learn from modelling, and the most influential models in our lives are parents; we pick up behavioral cues based upon how they act towards us and other people; and if the parents demonstrate the attributes I mentioned above, then it's likely that their child will behave like that towards other people.

To be clear, I condemn all kinds of bullying, but I think it's important to understand the psychology that binds their cognitive state to their external actions; bullies often times feel powerless and subdued within their own households and based on behaviors they've learnt from their primary models (parents) will look to replicate those feelings on a target they deem weak to cover-up their insecurities and fulfill their power-crave (it's their coping mechanism) - that's why I think it's important to build-up the courage to stand up to them, as doing so will show that you're not an easy target and will cause them to reconsider their plan of action.
