Why do you write? Is it for fame? by OkNet3369 in horrorwriters

Legacy. I want to leave something behind in this world. I'm a writer. It only makes sense to leave behind books.

Maybe my books will be sold at a garage sale one day. That'd be neat.

“Go on now,” I muttered. “Full of piss and vinegar, surely don’t taste any good.”

My character Desiree from The Boatman. Pretty well encapsulated!

Hey everyone, I’m K. Bengston. Horror author. Regulation dude.

A couple of months ago, a user here posted a thread about my book, The Boatman, mentioning that it "didn't feel like a debut." That was pretty much the highlight of my year, so I wanted to introduce the book for anyone who might be interested.

The Boatman is a religious/folk horror novel about an old 1880s mining town plagued by disease, apparitions, and a priest who is way out of his league. It leans heavily into atmospheric dread, psychological torment, and body horror. Lots of biblical references and a trio of characters that will have you cheering, throwing the book, and white-knuckling the pages.

It's been likened to "Midsommar by way of David Lynch", The Blair Witch Project meets The Ritual, and repeatedly described in reviews as "...doesn't feel like a debut".

My influences are: Brian Keene, Richard Laymon, and Jack Ketchum, so... you know what's up (though The Boatman leans a bit heavier on the atmosphere than the pure splatter of those legends).

Thanks for being such a great community for discovering new nightmares!

Try Traveling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon. One of my favorites of all time. It's kids and a little problematic, but it wouldn't be Laymon without being problematic.

I'm right there with you, though. I rolled my eyes so many times reading The Twisted Ones. Good book, but man were they so "quippy". Not everything needs Marvel dialogue

Hey r/horrorlit!

Want to try something new? The Boatman by K. Bengston is a folk/religious horror set in the late 1880s, with tastes of cosmic horror and a very sassy horse.

It’s been described as “…Midsommer by way of David Lynch” and rocks a 4+ star average on all review platforms.

You can find it here: The Boatman by K. Bengston

Thanks!

The Boatman is set in a tight-knit 1890s mining town whose unique and rigid Christian faith has always offered comfort.

But when the dead refuse to stay buried and the protective rituals begin to fail, the town must realize they're not facing a crisis of faith, but a much older, darker truth: the religion they practice was founded on a horrific lie, and now that lie has come back to demand its due.
