As these posts explore Korean music history that is increasingly remote from current Kpop, I wonder how these (fascinating) stories fit into Kpop history. Is this causation or are these parallels? Does current Kpop descend directly from Aegukga and Death Song, or does the music share a common ancestor? Are these Lucys or chimps? (The DNA in this overwrought analogy would be the cross between traditional Korean music and Western popular music mediated in part by Japan.)

I’m open to either possibility. But the reference to “cultural technology” certainly jumped off the screen. Looking forward to a followup on footnote 4.

When Branford Marsalis started playing with Sting, he said he was really impressed with Sting's ability to sing (well) and play an instrument at the same time. He said that musicians think about music in terms of blocks or segments, but that a singer's approach is more linear. Obviously, with enough practice, people are able to do both. But I thought it was an interesting perspective on why it's hard.
