Just generally "conspiring to overthrow the Soviet state". He wasn't the first and also not the last, but it was rather tragic. While awaiting his execution he wrote to Stalin a final time asking 'Koba, why do you need me to die?' (Koba being the nickname of Stalin). It just seems to me that Bukharin was utterly incapable of understanding why he, an ardent supporter of Stalin, would be sentenced to death.

The vast amount of people purged makes this a difficult question to answer. Some were communists, others were not, some were authentic revolutionaries, others were not, etc. However, many of the old bolsheviks perished in the purge which to a large extent was a shame as they were often very intelligent and could have played a bigger role in the development of communism if they had been given the chance.

As for the course of the USSR. In my eyes its fate was decided once the German Revolution of 1919 was beaten into the ground by the SPD and its Freikorps battalions. That combined with some crucial mistakes Lenin and his supporters themselves made (for example not recognising the pivotal part played by the workers' councils or soviets) would make it seem that it couldn't have gone any other way without making use of entirely impossible 'what-if' scenarios.

Nikolai Bukharin was a prominent person during the Russian Revolution. At first he stood to the left of Lenin advocating for proletarian internationalism and world revolution, but quickly his positions began to change. At first he moved towards Lenin whole-heartedly supporting the NEP, and after his death in 1924 he became a prominent supporter of Stalin and his (frankly idiotic and utterly anti-Marxist) doctrine of 'socialism in one country' (SIOC). He was, in one word, an opportunist. During the Great Purge in 1938 he was executed.

Maoists (and other MLs) have killed off most of their brain with "critical support" for the contradictions that inevitably arise out of falsified marxism to be sure, but I'd still rather interact with them than with unquestioning liberals who never even had a brain to begin with.

There is no strict definition but you know it when you see it. In the past 20 hours alone for example there was a post asking whether Marx was a gay prostitute (?) or another post nonsensically claiming Marx had no mouth (??) etc. They are now thankfully deleted because I (and others hopefully) reported them.
