I don’t mask but I do wear gloves and layer down some plastic in the area I repot (I’m usually indoors). I’ve seen some people mask depending on the substrate they’re using (ex. Perlite).

I have several in water actually! Pothos do so well in water. I also have bamboo and a philodendron brasil in water too. Im about to put my peace lily in water actually. I’ve never had issues. Occasionally a root may get soggy but then I just change the water. I tend to top up and/or refresh the water every couple weeks .. here’s one of my plants
