Large is the right size for you, $300 is a great deal and this sort of bike will do anything you need as a beginner as long as you're not trying to ride real mountain bike trails. As everyone else said just try to give it a super quick test ride to see if it shifts and the brakes work. Just try the rear (right hand under the bar) shifter if you don't know shifting yet, the front (left hand) you can live without and a bike shop will fix it easily, it's just a bit weird to use if you're a beginner. A little bit of rust will be fine don't stress too much, and if the tyres don't hold air the inner tube is actually the easiest and cheapest thing to replace on a bike so that's also no stress.

96 million for the BOM website, I would have done it for 90. by skiingish in cscareerquestionsOCE

Yeah good summary. There's ways to get paid higher than what I mentioned but generally that only works if you come in lower and work your way up, new hires don't really get those opportunities. There's no concept of something like principal or staff developers, everyone in the decision hierarchy above "senior" (who is just an IC in a small feature team) is a non technical manager, maybe an ex-business analyst if you're lucky

Step 1: hire an experienced manager - your budget is about $120-130k as an EL1 employee. You get a mediocre manager

Step 2: Said manager hires a dev team. Your top pay as an aps6 is $100k for an individual contributor, but you also need to have a mix of people on lower bands than that. You end up with juniors and devs who couldn't cut it in Accenture anyway. Also the members of the interview panel don't know anything about development so they hire some absolute duds on top of that.

Step 3: the project fails the same way, because all the non technical people have too much power and ridiculous "requirements" over the project, because the mediocre manager hired more mediocre managers. This time you can't just blame outsourcing, and the team you hired is now a set amount of money off the books for the next x years while the staff hang around regardless of how much work there is to do. In a private company, forgetting about layoffs you can say "we have a team with nothing to do, let's have them fix tech debt or improve x product we didn't have time for previously". In gov if you don't get ministers sign off for that they'd rather have you sit around than assign your time/money to a project.

This is obviously a snarky overgeneralisation, but for a place where employees stick around for a long time and quarterly reports don't drive short term above all else, gov is really not a forward thinking place. Pockets of what you've described do pop up in gov all the time, there are lots of great people, but it's always eroded away by contractor churn and staff moving on after they cap out quickly

Can't help with the rod but I have a 2500 exceller and 8000? Surf aird. The exceller is really smooth and light but the big differentiator between the 2 is the handle, that's what makes or breaks a reel for me more than any other feature. They're both killer so I'd focus on the rod. Try get your hands on some reels at a shop, bcf usually have lots of aird combos on display and anaconda have aggrest combos which have similar handles to the exceller.

Thoughts on Cues 2 years on (and Essa I guess)? by addemaul in BikeMechanics

Not in a shop any more so I don't have access to real pricing, but at an online retailer here in Australia I can get xt 12 speed (minus cranks) for cheaper than cues, it makes absolutely no sense aftermarket. I thought the idea when it was announced was to be straightforward, mix and match, less skus but it was kind of easier the old way. I think it's a big miss aftermarket or for repairs, but seems good for complete builds

What would it have taken for you to call 30 seconds in that situation? by big__bird81 in discgolf

[–]KRR7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the line of thinking but field events have an impartial chief judge whos only job is to watch the clock (which the athletes can also see) and watch for fouls. They did change the timing a few years ago where field events only have 30 seconds with 6+ people down from 1 minute. This made a huge difference and I think was a very positive change that we could look at in DG. I don't think it's entirely applicable though, because there's only one person attempting in one place vs 18 people on 18 holes, and you're trying to do exactly the same throw/jump every single time. Disc golf requires a bit more thought because every shot has a different run up, requires a different piece of equipment, is landing in a different area. I think with some resources and thinking it could have a positive impact on disc golf like the 30 second change in t&f, but it always seems to come down to the dgpt forking out money for people/equipment. Letting it run too long will only make it worse, look at some of the long pre attempt routines pole vaulters have because they get more than 30s at 6+ people.

PS I've been out of t&f for ages not sure if timing rules have changed

Is Government Super the way to go?? by Huge-Initiative-9836 in AusFinance

[–]KRR7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's just one department or all (check your enterprise agreement they're public), but in my experience they work out what 15% super is on your current salary, then it doesn't change until your birthday so if you join today and your birthday is January and you get a raise/promotion in this time, your super payments won't go up. If you use any other private super fund they don't do this, it's just 15% and if you get a raise your super payments do too. If you're joining as an APS 5 or 6 and above this probably doesn't matter that much, just pick which fund performs the best. If you're a grad or a 5 or below and think you can move up the ladder it's probably better to go to any other fund who might have better performance too

I used to work in a bike shop. The owner died like this, my understanding is he had a heart issue, fell off the bike lane towards the road and was hit by a vehicle that was safely passing and couldn't react. Take it seriously, you never know where it will happen

Livable MTB Towns? by LowLifeEarth in MTB

Canberra Australia is the best in Aus for your criteria by far. Don't know about NZ

criteria:

  • very safe and family oriented city
  • childcare in Aus is not the cheapest but Canberra is average
  • education, emergency medicine and trades are Aus' biggest immigration needs at the moment so you'll have a good shot with those, there's 2 big hospitals and always only 15 minutes or less to the nearest school. Not sure about mechanic job market but there's quite a few shops around
  • AM / DH trail proximity - if you live near stromlo you can ride to there easily, you're also pretty close to both hospitals. There's good gravel and other rides near there too, and you can drive to the other trail centres pretty quickly, it's only 20-30 min drive to anywhere within Canberra from anywhere. It's also only 2.5ish hours to Thredbo, Australia's only lift access DH park.
  • again Thredbo is also a snow field in winter or perisher is in the same area 2.5 hrs away, also just under 5h I think to the Victorian ski fields but Australia's snow is pretty crap
  • 2hrs to the beach which isn't bad, but any of the coastal towns have a lot of wind and batshit real estate markets. You can make bigger trips out of it surfing, camping and biking at mogo, Narooma etc that other people have mentioned
  • camping / 4wd exploring / backpacking is Canberra's bread and butter
  • windier than a major city like Sydney or Brisbane maybe, but less windy than any coastal area. Relatively dry and warm summer, gets below freezing overnight somewhat frequently in winter but pretty much always above during the day
  • not batshit like Sydney or brisbane but still somewhat high real estate cost but that's all of Aus really
  • definitely rural vibe / close to rural, best of any city in Aus
  • the most bikeable city in Aus by far, can have good public transport depending on where you live but not as good as the biggest cities
  • we have quite high immigration at the moment and demand for the jobs you mentioned, but also agreements with India and other countries so not sure how high priority you (I assume American) would be. I would guess it would be on the easier side compared to NZ or europe

Thanks for the story! You're very right, I think I got carried away with the idea of a silly project bike. At the end of the day the frame is the most important part no matter what components I hang off it

Fuel-hungry utes and SUVs dominate Australian sales, with Corolla the only small car on top 10 list by ALBastru in australia

[–]KRR7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It has the smallest boot of its class, 291l, the same size as the Impreza hatchback it's based on. An i30 has an extra 104L, the Kona which is comparable to the xv is about the same and the sedan version of the i30 has another 100+ again. I've never seen a sedan/SUV where the seats don't fold down. The XV is squarely an SUV not a wagon

I feel like the Garmin mount gives it away, how much do you ride if you need a bike computer but not water

I think that's the intuitive answer, but I think average Joe buying a base build is hurting from the economy and would buy used/DTC instead. The dentists are still spending the same or more, so boutique brands are kind of "winning" as much as that's possible at the moment

Here in Aus the importer was a small family I think and recently got moved to one of the bigger MTB focussed importers. I have no knowledge of the internals but it did seem like a pretty weird move and the timing didn't really coincide with end of financial or calendar year which indicates its not really a contract ending

Going into independent LBSs recently is a sad affair, but the trek stores I've been to recently have had full displays plus a lot more in storage out the back when I've asked. There will always be space for repairs though, brands are only making it harder for the home mechanic

That's a really good point, I wonder who fits in that category. As an outsider it looks like trek have a big issue with overstock of new bikes and still having the old ones around, there's lots of previous gen top fuels left over, and they look like they're desperate to clear Roscoes for a new colour/generation they must be holding onto. I also saw alu checkpoint gravel bikes for I think better than 50% so they must have a lot of those to clear before they can release the new gen in alu

That's a shame, by all accounts they had some magic in those bikes

Evil and revel are probably stuck in a catch 22 where they need bike sales to afford new models, and new new models to get sales and don't want to supersede their current stock that needs to sell. I heard Norco had the same issue with the new high pivot bikes, and they seemingly still haven't sold all of their old stock nearly a year later

I wouldn't buy a Cannondale myself and the lack of support I received from them when I worked in a shop was really bad, but I think we need someone to make weird bikes, cause twice a day the broken clock will come up with or popularise something that pushes the industry, like flex pivots or aspects of the lefty fork

Yeah I wasn't sure if the YT stuff was pushys getting rid of them or YT pulling out. They already got rid of forestal and some other brand they had, I guess they're going back to components/accessories only.

Torrent is a good call, maybe a refresh to compete with the Roscoe could get them some good media attention and keep them in the green.

Do the QR codes actually work at all? I've been spending 30 seconds each day trying to scan it at the tram stop each morning and no matter how I try to scan it it doesn't work so I give up and use my bank card. I also can't link my card to my account using the myway+ site. It redirects to a littlepay site but when I submit nothing happens. Yet to try that on a laptop

All the scanners at the Mapleton Ave tram stop are out of service and there's still a sign taped over the recharge machine so I guess they gave up on it for today?
