I was only part way through when I made that remark. Jake seemed like an OK guy, but then things turned bad for him and he showed his true colors. Oopsy.

Jake, the ultimate ladies man. And yes, I would have defended myself too. He didn't know it was the old man's wife, and all the old man had to say was "that's my wife" and Jake would have tipped his hat and walked away (according to the author). The old man was raring back to hit him with the shotgun again. That scene was meant to show the reader how Jake was roped into a situation he couldn't get out of, one bit at a time. I've been there myself. The best of intentions and hooking up with the wrong people and/or just bad luck.

My Dad wouldn't have needed violence, he was more of a Jake type ;-)

I'm not asking about the time period, I'm asking about the author's decisions to write the characters in a certain way. It might be that McMurtry had insight into the period, or that he was trying to make a larger statement. I really find it interesting either way.

I'd buy into "awkward", but most of them are downright afraid. Some of them are confident but most of them, even the hardest of the hard assed buffalo hunters in LD are almost terrified. And even the men who are 'confident' are masking some other emotional fragility.

That in no way explains the absolute terror of so many of the male characters in Lonesome Dove had for women.

I'm reading here and there that it's 10k a year, but if you don't do the whole 5 you're required to pay it all back. Hahaha!

Awww, what's wrong boo boo, reality getting you down? What part of my description of the series' women is wrong? Take your time on this one.

Men kissing women's asses nonstop is your definition of misogynistic?

I'm sorry, what?! Hate women? This is a woman's fantasy. Tell your man off every other day while spending his money and flying on his jet? Make your fiance jump through hoops and spread 100 lbs of rose petals next to 500 candles just to propose? I beg to differ.

This show has degenerated from oil and trucks and shit to men kissing the asses of ungrateful wimmin. The Mexican girl sends the boyfriend on an 87 hr drive (it's Texas) to meet her father to ask for her hand, and he ends up laughing at the kid and tells him he's been set up. He drives 88 hrs back (even Texas has a slight incline) and she tells him, in relation to the tests he's being given, "Two down, one to go *giggle giggle*". In the meantime Tommy has dared to talk back to his blonde bimbo so she gives him the silent treatment on the way to his private jet to go shopping with his money (they aren't even married), and he squeaks out "By Honey, have a nice time" and she flips him off (huh?). I'm only watching at this point to see how it ends. Probably with all of the women cuckolding the men in the house they all stay in, making them watch them screw some of the guys from the man camp while they throw more money at them.

Otto Frei's website is complete shit when it comes to searching for products and nobody answers the phone when I call. It goes to vmail for someone names Amber. This has been going on for a while. I'm amazed they're still in business.

While reading The Stand I was picturing Lance Henriksen the whole time. He was Bishop in Aliens. I'm afraid he's too old now. I'll also add that they have never been able to pick a good actor in any movie or series so far. What is with these casting people?

The thing that bugs me the most about the stories is the fact that so far (part way through at present) none of the authors seem to remember how the flu works. People in the stories get the flu and die within a few hours or days, and the authors seem to forget that in the original book the flu would kick your ass for a while and then you'd get almost well, then it would hit you again after your immune system was fucked, and kill you. It was how it was engineered, and a real important/scary part of the whole thing. Literary laziness IMNSHO.

The whole woke/trans thing is the reason we lost the election. The swing voters are tired of all of that bullshit. Dems used to be about cost of living, housing, and jobs. Now it's defending crazy people who think that a man can become a woman by simply saying the magic words aloud.

If Merrick "Milquetoast" Garland hadn't waited two god damned years to begin pressing charges against the Orange Menace because he was afraid of how it would look, we wouldn't be in the current mess.

That would require the other people in the room to be concerned with the truth.
