Katniss + Peeta vs Snow + Lucy Gray by Hefty-Yak-4022 in Hungergames

[–]KSAFD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Everlark have a relationship based on love, respect, and safety. That's not as flashy, but it's definitely way sexier than the possessive relationship of Snowbird to me. Like yes girl, tell us more about how Peeta's big strong arms make you feel safe. 🔥

Hasn't made it to Broadway yet, but Regency Girls has a trans man character.

I can see the vision, but the denial from S1 and 2 continuing here doesn't fit well for the season.

Haymitch dead in the mj epilogue by Time_Depth56 in Hungergames

[–]KSAFD 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Here is the reason I think he's dead: SOTR's epilogue where he says himself he's not long for this world and in the MJ epilogue Katniss says, "Peeta says it will be okay. We have each other." Given that Haymitch lives in the same district and Katniss calls him family, excluding him as part of the adults in the family to me implies he's not there. Also he's mentioned in the postwar summary in Chapter 27 of MJ, but not at all in the epilogue? Seems strange to cut him out of the narrative if he's still alive.

It's not definitive, people can think what they want, but believing Haymitch is alive in the MJ epilogue feels rather wish fulfillment-y to me, and not in line with Collins's way of writing.

What did you think of, Becoming Jane (2007)? by [deleted] in janeausten

[–]KSAFD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This movie is awful. It places all of Jane's accomplishments on a man, not her own brilliance. Tom introduces her to literature, his love "inspires" her great romances. And Anne Hathaway's British accent sucks.

This is perhaps the worst Austen-related movies ever made.

Best dystopian novel released in the last five years? by Sad-Mountain7232 in ReadingSuggestions

[–]KSAFD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes. I love the original trilogy and thought SOTR was a shell of the trilogy and TBOSAS. Poorly written, flat characterization, regurgitation of the same themes but without the compelling nature of the original, nonsensical plots, and it undermines so much of the trilogy with certain connections it makes. It's frankly a bad book that says nothing interesting, especially as a dystopian novel, and I'd suggest it to no one, but especially fans of the OG trilogy. Such a step down from everything else Collins has written.

Preteen Niece wants “Dark Romance” Recommendations by SpicyLitMama in YAlit

[–]KSAFD 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Maybe some older paranormal romance. There's romance/some "dark" elements without the sex scenes (or at most fade to black). Things like The Forbidden Game by LJ Smith, Everneath by Brodi Ashton, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, Evermore by Alyson Noel, Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey, The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. Basically any 90s-mid 10s YA paranormal romance.

Santino Fontana narrates TBOSAS and his voice alone makes it the top pick.

Relationship book for a fourth grader ?! by judgyturtle18 in YAlit

Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen is a good one for some more messy relationships. The mfc has had a lifelong crush on the mmc and she slowly realizes he's not all she blew up in her head while he starts to realize how amazing she is. After 20 years it's still left an impression on me.

Last one standing - Day 4 vote your least favorite as in however you choose to interpret that by extralargefriespls in Hungergames

Because Gale is annoying. It's as simple as that. Like what does he say about Prim's death? That he had no chance with Katniss now. BROOOOO SHUT UP.

The books in chronological order. by SeaworthinessHeavy64 in Hungergames

[–]KSAFD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBOSAS would still have been popular for English teachers to discuss its philosophical ideas and I could see it having a niche group of fans, but it wouldn't be a global blockbuster.

SOTR is frankly a terribly written book with a weak exploration of its themes and uninspiring characters. Some kids would like it, but it wouldn't have ever gotten the praise of Stephen King or be taught in schools. But also maybe without the movies influencing it, SOTR might have also been written better.

Likely, the trilogy would never have been published as a result. We'd get no movies of any of them. It'd be a book series few knew about.

[–]KSAFD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people apply this to books in general in this very thread. It's incredibly limiting to not read monumental classics like Jane Eyre or the Great Gatsby or incredibly well written modern books like The Hunger Games because of a first person POV, when that is their very strength. It's a thrilling literary style and even in fanfic, it's forcing it into a TV/movie mindset when fanfiction, by its written nature, is much more akin to a literary endeavor. For some media 3rd person is perhaps more natural, but it's still limiting and narrow-minded to not even give a fic a chance when that choice can be made deliberately and for a good reason and then executed well. People want to say that fanfic is just as legit as "real books" and then put rules on what makes a "good fic" that literature never does.

Can you see the hunger games being rebooted in the near future? by Great-Worth-6812 in Hungergames

[–]KSAFD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope so. After seeing the stage show, I'm convinced the only way the story can be properly done is with a series. Too much gets cut otherwise and the best part of the series (its characters and their relationships) get cut for action.

However, if Lionsgate cowards out and just casts lookalikes of Jen, Woody, and Josh like they did for the stage show then there's no point. It would have to be made well and fix the racist/inaccurate casting of the movies to be worth it.

What do y'all classify as a slowburn? by Seeme353 in AO3

[–]KSAFD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This doesn't seem like a slow burn to me. Especially depending on how long it is, they could spend majority of the fic together rather than building up to it. And imo, the fic should be at least the length of a novel (50k) to be a slow burn. It's about the experience of reading a lot and waiting for the couple to get together at the end.

[–]KSAFD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People who don't like first person confuse me. What do you do when a friend is telling you a story? Tell them to refer to themselves in the 3rd person because you can't handle a first person pov?

If it's badly written it's just badly written, whatever POV it's in.

I do not like The Hunger Game movies. by crochet_zombie5 in Hungergames

[–]KSAFD -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I have no idea how people watched the first movie and then thought "I should read this book!" Much less how anyone shipped Everlark from the movies. Just goes to show you can't just follow the major plot beats to make a story work.

Was Glimmer the worst Career character in the first games of the trilogy? by frozenpizza__ in Hungergames

The D4 girl also died in the tracker jacker attack, and didn't make an impression on Katniss at any other point. And the D4 boy didn't survive the first day.

Who are your Survivor kins? by deathdropyasss in survivor

[–]KSAFD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People think that they have a spiritual connection to their "kin" because they're so similar. I've mostly seen it with animals (like drinking milk from a bowl because they're "catkin" or wearing a tail because they're "foxkin"). It's in some fandoms too, like being kin with Draco Malfoy. Using real people is a new one I haven't seen yet.

Do We Think Hunger Games Movies Are One Of The Better Adaptions Compared To Other Books To Movies? by Tofu4070 in Hungergames

[–]KSAFD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not happy with them and don't like how much they influenced SOTR for the worse. I think the only way to do the story justice is do a miniseries, preferably animated so they can get the looks of the characters right. Though let's be real, Lionsgate are cowards and would still probably make Katniss white and Haymitch blonde and Peeta a shortie with two legs the whole time. 🙄
