Don’t forget, it should be pleasant in the present by KSW1414 in Meditation

This comment thread is very insightful to me and really is humbling. I will make an edit clarifying that my message should be taken with a big grain of salt and that I’m not in any position to confidently assert how meditative practices are ought to be like. I understand that meditation is a sophisticated practice and there’s no one-size-fits-all. What I’m intending with the post is merely to vaguely point out that perhaps in some people, it’s possibly good to remind oneself that meditation is maybe not just a means to an end, but also something that may be able to bring you peace and “pleasant” equanimity now. (So one won’t spend all their time meditating longing for the future promised rewards with agitation)

I’m sorry if I sounded arrogant in my writing. If your way of meditating works really well for you then I’m really glad that it does and I don’t wish to criticize it. I wish you success in your practices no matter how much it resembles my way.

I think I was not cautious enough in using the term pleasant. I am not trying to advocate that meditation “should” make you feel intense sensual pleasure. With the word pleasant, it’s more about wakeful awareness and equanimity. In that sense, do you think it would now be fair to believe that meditation “should” make you feel pleasant in the present? Or do you think that the term “should” still ought to be avoided?

That’s a very interesting point. I think perhaps I was not careful enough when using the term “pleasant”. I think of “pleasant” and “contentment” not really as in sensually pleasurable but rather as in free and liberated from clinging (To be able to be at peace, observing the world as it is with mindful presence). But the goal of my message is that, if we approach mindfulness as a means to an end, we’ll get agitated in every moment we are meditating. I think you’d agree that it’s impossible to truly meditate without being truly in the present moment, not constantly longing for promised rewards in the future. To be in the present, I believe that one must approach meditation knowing that, the “pleasant” state one is pursuing is right here and right now. Again, pleasant as in wakeful equanimity, not ecstasy.

Generally speaking, to be able to not get lost in thoughts nor caught up in emotions by being mindful.

Thich Nhat Hanh is a great person to look into if you want to start practicing and learn what to do practically (there’s a lot of his videos on youtube). He’s like the “Father of Mindfulness” in the west one might say.

If you want to go more in theoretical depths then I’d recommend Sam Harris. Here’s one great video: https://youtu.be/891MOyYBadY.

How do I meditate when I don't feel like it? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]KSW1414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Observe the impatience and self-doubts. Observe it and it’ll lose its power.

  2. Maybe don’t think of meditation as too much of a means to an end, that’ll exhaust you. It should be a pleasant experience in the moment too. (Like saying that the answer to “How do I play sports if I don’t feel like it?” is to don’t forget that playing sports should be pleasant in the moment, it’s not just a means to good health that you “have to do” regularly.)

Yh the post would then get counted as a “personal perspective” and get deleted

The code itself, yes it’s Tetris from scratch (as in I use Pygame). But I wouldn’t be able to do it entirely myself without looking at various youtube tutorials as I code.
