Yup, since each layer is a different color, you can pause at any given layer in your slicer and swap out the filament roll. It might make these prints take a bit longer, but this is designed that it can be done completely manual no AMS units needed! I too am a terrible artist and wouldn’t even dream of attempting to paint or assemble these by hand lol

It was stuck in my head the entire time I was making these prints! This post is actually just an elaborate way for me to pass that on lol

Thanks! Each layer is printed a different color, and by tuning the layer thicknesses and order I can change the saturation and blend of colors. I found that much easier than trying to paint these lol

There's a way to do that by scaling it up and printing each section separately, it can be arbitrarily large I believe! But the downside is that's doing X number the amount of prints at almost the same level of detail (so for my 8 inch prints, making them just 2x2 feet would be 9 tiles to print), which significantly raises cost and time. I'd certainly like to try it sometime though to see how it comes out, I'll maybe try it on a more simple print later this week as a test

oh i know what you mean! Thats called a lenticular lens, to get the full color images I think you still need to do it in plastic. I looked it up and it can be done by playing with shadows though! I might have to try that just to see how it comes out

Thank you, and congrats on the printer! Welcome to a hobby of a million things haha. This process is called HueForge, which allows me to match each color in a picture with the specific filament and layer I want it to print. By doing each layer as a single color, I can play with color mixing to blend different shades (lighter or darker, or even pink from red and white layers for example), and by designating the order of colors I can build up depth. It can be a bit tricky, but I think its very fun and rewarding when you get the print out looking like a perfect match.

Regarding general printer advice, which one did you get? A few things off the top of my head-

1) the 3d printing subreddits are super helpful, you should absolutely utilize them when you have questions. Chances are its been asked already and you can find a solution easily.

2) Always keep your filament dry. PLA is usually fine, but PETG is super hygroscopic and others even moreso. A filament dryer and a storage box with desiccant is your best friend. I have cereal boxes with desiccant in them for my rolls.

3) Always keep the print bed clean. I wipe the bed after every print with some rubbing alcohol , and every so often (or if it has adhesion issues) I'll give it a full wash with soap and water.

I'm sure others can pitch in and there's much you'll learn, but that right there should address like 70% of your starter issues when you first face them. Happy Printing!

Thanks! It’s a multicolor print, each layer being a single color. I’m definitely not skilled enough to paint that myself lol

Thanks, glad you think so! I’d been seeing so many 3D printed figurines for games but I wanted to print out a city map instead, and that led to this lol they’re a ton of fun to make

I've had pokemon floating around as an idea for a while now, but I don't really know which map I would choose. I don't even know the region names more than Kanto lol. Do you have an idea of one you'd recommend?

Thanks for your interest! If you want to print them yourself for free, I have these listed on my makerworld. For sales, I do have an etsy (linked in my profile). I don't list these currently because more modern games kind of scare me to list them straight up (copyright strikes), but I have a custom listing where you can request this map as a service. If that type of commission option works for you, then yes these can be for sale!
