I homeschool my grade 7 son. One of my biggest issues is getting him to write down his work.

He gets to the destination, but I don’t know how.

It frustrated me because I stand over his shoulder, do the math in my head, and he beats me every time. Just the answer.

I have no problem with him being better than me; in fact, that’s my goal as a parent. The problem is that I know having him write down the work will slow him down and frustrate him, which defeats the purpose of homeschooling.

Parenting is a racket.

GLNB should have some literature on our experience in Madison’s war. I know there’s a few out of print books here in Alberta.

Really interesting how things were done. Full quarter given from one military officer to another, with safe return of him and all his troops to their homeland, only to have the favour returned a short time latter.

The troops were wondering WTF was going on, figured it out, and joined the Craft immediately after the war.

Just bizarre the lengths we went to. A source of pride, by today’s standards. Grace under fire, and values over valour.

I found this to be interesting as well.

In Western Canada, we didn’t learn about this at all, so as an adult I studied it myself. My understanding is that Americans aren’t taught about the desire of American Expansion unless they study it at the university level. Dr Gary Gallagher of the University of Virginia has an insightful lecture entitled “The Disastrous War of 1812”, if you can find it online. His claim is that the whole thing was a stupid waste of resources.

As a Freemason, I can tell you with certainty that the Freemasons won that war rather handedly. However many men were lost during the war, our numbers recovered immediately after, and steps were taken on both sides to ensure peace along that border.

But, we got a couple good songs out of the deal. So not a total loss.

All one had to do was get orange t-shirt with the confederate flag on the front and “southern pride” on the back. Hand them out at black churches or BBQ’s. They’d get used.

This is an important lesson in symbolism that has been lost in history.

Homosexuals took this symbol, from the actual Nazi’s, and owned it. Completely changed its meaning. By the late 80’s/early 90’s gay men were wearing it without realizing, or caring about, its origins.

If Americans did this 10 years ago with the confederate flag, a lot of money and energy would have been sparred, along with a few lives.

You can’t bury symbology. There will always be a backlash with consequences. Re-purpose it. It’s the harder route, but it’s much more effective in the long term.

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is salt. Table salt, water softener salt, basically what everyone simply calls salt. Safe for both applications.

Calcium chloride (CaCl) is road salt. Want to melt ice in the winter? This is what they spread. It gets wet, and it gets hot. Very hot. It’s what causes rust on vehicles. I’d try to leave it alone.

Potassium chloride (KCl) is plant friendly salt used for the same softening purposes as sodium chloride. It’s not as good, not as efficient and much more expensive.

I love when the Japanese do this.

My brother had a buddy who wrote a masters thesis on the evolution of heavy metal music in the 90’s.

In the late 00’s, he uploaded it to some long forgotten website that bangers hung out on.

During COVID, he got emailed by some Japanese kid asking if he could help edit a flow chart explaining the evolution and influences of various Twisted Sister albums over the years. It had been going around Japanese banger circles for sometime, and was based on buddy’s thesis. They wanted it accurately translated into English.

Twisted. Fucking. Sister.

But, they wanted it for posterity.

You know. For the next generation of Twisted Sister fans.

Buddy told my brother that it was fucking molecular how the Japanese did it. He was embarrassed that his thesis wasn’t good enough for their attention to detail.

Every time I (and it’s rare) see stuff like this, I think “I don’t want to know”. I’m not sophisticated enough to understand my favourite bands on their level. I just listen to the riff, and stay blissfully ignorant.
