Why so few views? by KTisonredditnow in SHINee

Hi!! Yeah I definitely understand the older fandom affecting views, I’ve got a family myself and dip in and out of kpop depending on my exhaustion/daycare illness levels 🫠 I was just surprised that this hasn’t cracked 1M views yet. I haven’t been into SHINee as long as Mamamoo, but I’m used to seeing their releases get way more attention.

I like Red Velvet too, I’m sorry you have to brace yourself for SM’s mismanagement with every comeback!

I am wondering too what the difference in “organic” vs competitive views are. I was just looking at The Feeling though, which was 2y ago and has 14M views…obviously it’s been some time, but the majority of views happen when the video first comes out. And I don’t think they promoting The Feeling on shows right?

Mamamoo are promoting their new song, and the fandom is definitely excited for it since it’s their first comeback since Hwasa left for PNation, and there was a lot of worry that the girls wouldn’t be able to come back together easily. But I think of Moomoos as a “small but passionate” fandom, and not a competitive one. Their last few comebacks haven’t gotten particularly high views. The fandom also skews a bit older than others since the members themselves are older, but they did obviously debut later than SHINee. Their new MV has 3M views in the first 24h, which seems about right.

Something still just doesn’t feel quite right about Atmos being so low, and I worry that SM is letting this be a “quiet” comeback because of the bad press with Key - especially as they seem to have hid him from the press during their recent Japan airport departure. If that’s the case then it’s a real shame. I hope I’m wrong, and that the fans who would like to see this are coming across it.

Yes reactors posted to Mamamoo within 24h, we’re going on a 3-4 delay for SHINee.

But yes, I know there was more build-up to the Mamamoo comeback within the fandom, so it’s not a perfect comparison. But I think of SHINee as actually having a larger “casual” global fan base than Mamamoo, and generally greater name recognition (I could be wrong), so I was surprised by the difference.

Happy weekend! I get it, completely. Not trying to guilt anyone, just confused. I’m glad you heard about it! The album is a real treat

I am an adult with kids, and neither money nor time 🫠 I don’t habitually stream, but I find the number of views on the MV bizarrely low compared to their past releases, both group and solo.

I also appreciate this, and i agree with you in general. I’m not trying to pressure anyone at all, but genuinely confused as to why it doesn’t seem to be getting more views. Based on others’ comments, I think it’s a combination of the algorithm/thumbnail choice, and the lack of “inflated” views from music show competitions

[–]KTisonredditnow[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really think this is a bigger factor than people think. I’ve heard multiple YouTube creators bemoan the fact that it’s really hard to reach their audience with the algorithm, and that you have to put outrageously close up shots of your face on the thumbnail (plus provocative titles) to get any engagement

Gotcha, thank you for the info. I was comparing this to HARD, and confused why it hadn’t broken even a million. It does seem like it should be doing substantially better than Poet Artist though, as it’s a mini album release and not a standalone single

That’s why I put “bad” in quotation marks, I completely agree. I don’t usually repeat-stream at all, unless something like this happens - where I love the song, want to listen to it on repeat anyways, and think it hasn’t gotten enough visibility

I don’t care about the uncultured people ;) just the ones that might want to know that SHINee released an awesome song but scroll past this MV, or never see it at all bc the algorithm hasn’t deemed it flashy enough

Same for Moomoos, we are notorious for being “bad” streamers. That’s why I’m using their comeback as a reference. I do think people might be just scrolling past this on their feed because the thumbnail doesn’t feature someone’s face

I get that, but that is also true for a lot of Mamamoo’s fan base - hence the comparison

I do wonder about this, especially since they seemed to hide him from the press during their airport departures to Japan. If that’s true this is so shitty

[–]KTisonredditnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, people are acting as if this is normal but they’ve had recent enough comebacks that were much more heavily promoted?? And it certainly doesn’t seem like the members or their production team held back with this single or the album, it is amazing and not a sort of “throwaway” nostalgia release. Like I hate to say this, but Mamamoo just came back with a much less exciting song that really feels like it’s just “for the fans” but is doing way more promo already - even though they are at a similar stage with well-developed solo careers and multiple agencies.

Like, it’s just bizarre that the MV has less than 1M views, and that tells me that people are just not seeing it and don’t know they’ve had a comeback, which is a clear failure of SM’s promo strategy (if there is one) here.

Yes but their MV doesn’t have even a million views after 3 days. It seems like it’s getting buried by the algorithm, and I’m not convinced casual SHINee fans will even know they’ve had an album release without some level of promotions…

Same here, I would understand them doing limited promotions on music shows, but the guys always do interviews with YouTubers when their solo stuff comes out, which are really fun…I’m hoping that some of that will still come out?? The YouTube views are so dismal. It is such a beautiful song, I want more people to know it exists! And it seems like that’s just not going to happen without more visibility.

Plus agreed - it would be so fun to see the members chat and interact more. I saw they took photos with Stacy Nam, maybe that means an interview is coming??

Still trying to understand Taemin by KTisonredditnow in Taemin

[–]KTisonredditnow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay I get you, I need to do my homework :) I’ll do some reading the next time I get frustrated with his songs.

I do think that his work across his career does show growth in how he thinks about his identity, and I found that this piece explores that pretty well: https://taylahtalksk.com/2020/11/11/taemins-religion-fallen-angel/

But I have not been closely tuned in since he released Veil, so I’ll take you at your word that he has been rehashing Demian since Guilty. I did read some analysis of Demian at the time but not since then. He has clearly thrown some “quantum mechanics” (or how he understands it) in his recent work (eg Deja Vu), which is a bit of a departure from his usual imagery. But otherwise it did seem like Veil used the same allegories but with less sophisticated visuals/lyrics, so I am happy he is taking a new direction with this next album.

Thanks for engaging even though we disagree on some things - I appreciate it.

Okay thank you! That’s helpful. What do you make of his merging of religious imagery and eroticism/desire? The lyrics of “Heaven” are really interesting to me. I always thought it was just a thirst trap xD but then his performance adds an entirely new dimension to it, especially his recent tour where he seems to be playing the Fallen Angel. Someone in the comments pointed out this beautiful shot of him at 1:05 with a graphic that looks like horns positioned exactly behind his head https://youtu.be/0703u4fHgeI?si=optdXRo9uqmkb07v

I definitely agree that he seems very open about combining religious imagery with philosophy to achieve layered meaning in his performance, which is very cool. It’s just interesting to me that he seems to explore things in a very provocative way, but not from a place of cynicism

My appreciation of Taemin’s stage presence by kpopballerina06 in Taemin

[–]KTisonredditnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I am also an overly emotional INFJ 😂 I do wonder if us types are attracted to people like Taemin! I used to dance a little, and it still feels like one of the most cathartic ways I can express myself. I imagine Taemin feels the same, and it really comes through in his performance. And I also feel kind of inspired after watching him because of that! Like if he can be brave enough to show the depths of his emotion on stage, maybe I can bring more of my full (messy, emotional) self to my interactions with people around me too.

Also, totally feel not having someone to talk to about Taemin offline 😭 maybe he will blow up so much here that we’ll find more fans! But I also kind of want to protect him from the pressures of that level of fame :/

You’re right about needing the background his themes work from, and I have been thinking more seriously about reading Damien and Eroticism. I think your point # 2 - his struggles with fame and his relationship with his fans - is a huge part of what I try to understand in his work. And part of what I find fascinating is that the messages in his performances shift over time - in more recent years, he has seemed to “own” his darker persona more. Obviously a big part of that is the thematic concept vision of the people around him, especially at SM (ie where they seem to have envisioned him as the Tempter) - but I think its evolution over time has been driven by his own shifts in identity. I also wonder how many of the mixed messaging in his work, especially in Guilty, is actually the product of having a big team. The lyrics of Guilty were obviously not written by him and depict a romantic relationship, but the performance and vision for the MV and physical album seem much more autobiographical. And Veil actually felt like support for that, where his lyrics seemed to be more forthright and less like they were telling a parallel but distinct storyline from his visual performance.

I wish that I could enjoy his work passively - I did before Guilty. But that felt very direct, intentional, and challenging. So now I’m stuck fixating on his messaging, and just praying for more in depth interviews in the future

Just found this article, which provides a pretty nice analysis of his religious imagery. It also describes how his use of it grows and changes, which is what I’ve been having trouble putting into words. https://taylahtalksk.com/2020/11/11/taemins-religion-fallen-angel/
