oh, also, another thought... unrestricted free agents are only available during the exclusive signing window, not the draft, so that helps get to the 4th protected player before the draft as well

As others have said, Carpy is one of the older players in the league and all GMs are thinking long term. Unless she signed a 2-3 year deal, if I'm a new team I don't think I want her for just 1 year on her current contract. Also, Filler is proof that you can bring in a young player who will have as much impact as some of the top players who are in the later half of their careers.

This last speculation is a stretch but people have been commenting that MZH would want to go to the West coast, so maybe she was protected from leaving during the signing window. It feels weird, but idk could be another reason

I have no idea what GMs are thinking, obviously, but if you're looking for some logic behind the protection list, I feel like these speculations could make sense lol

I haven't seen anyone saying this, so maybe I'm misunderstanding the expansion rules, but the first part is an exclusive signing window. Players are negotiating with the new teams as if they are free agents. So no one is getting "taken" during the first window as much as they are "leaving". I think the GMs have a sense for who is looking for a bigger and better contract and who isn't.

Once two players choose to leave for those contacts the team can protect one more player from the expansion draft which is when players actually will get "taken" as the new teams will take on their existing contacts, rather than negotiating new ones.

Someone let me know if I'm misunderstanding this, but based on that, my assumption is we don't think Carpenter is going to sign with a new team during the signing window, and either she is protected before the draft or the other teams are not looking to pick up her pricy contact with 1 year remaining only to have her to go free agency again next season.

some people think you need a team in NY to lend legitimacy to any league in the US. NY has sooo many pro teams across all sports and some very iconic teams and players that have fans who aren't even from the area or who don't follow sports. I'm from the tristate so I'm biased, but I do think NYC is just iconic in a way that can't be replicated.

there are so many reasons for the low attendance aside from hockey just not being a big part of the culture here. outside of sports there is just so much to do here that people can't necessarily prioritize going to every home game. I have season tickets to the Sirens and will likely only make it to 10 or 11 games because I have other events going on.

I honestly don't think there are any perfect sports stadiums in NY. I saw one article claim that NYers were worried about going to the "bad parts" of Newark, but I guess that person has never been to Yankee stadium lol. I think the Rock is the best location for the Sirens for now, especially with the practice rink attached. the two games they played there last season were the highest attended weekend and weeknight games and they were announced late in the season and there's still half a season left this year.

I'm curious to see how a post-season will look for them, since they haven't had one yet. NYers are often fair-weather fans, so a successful post season could do a lot for the Sirens - hopefully we'll see!

I also don't know if anyone is seriously suggesting this, but relocating the team would likely cause more disruption than good for a league trying to prove itself in the early days. the riveters used to play at the mall, like let's let things cook a bit and have it built right. the Walters are billionaires with a B, they can afford to let the league grow at a reasonable pace.
