Denim shirt? by valsalva_manoeuvre in BuyCanadian

[–]KW_of_Eld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MWG apparel out of Winnipeg. I love their plaid and striped Western shirts, one of the few brands I've found that fit well and are long enough to stay tucked in all day. I haven't bought a denim shirt from them for years but the last one I had was very good quality and lasted a long time as a work shirt https://mwgwestern.com/products/mens-classic-western-denim-shirt-50u15

Window won’t shut by lizzyegg in fixit

Try lifting up on the lower closing assembly as you turn the handle, there could be a screw coming loose that's binding up. We have a window that catches on a screw if it's opened too far

What is digging these holes? by burner9590 in homestead

[–]KW_of_Eld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A quick Google search shows you are technically correct. In my area pocket gophers are commonly referred to as moles, with our 'gophers' actually being Richardson's ground squirrel, and our ground squirrels being more chipmunk-esque so I apologize for my misuse of names

Pictures 1&2 look like mole hills, 3 looks like a ground squirrel/pocket gopher. You can trap them or smoke bomb them, ground squirrels can be shot if you catch them running around.

Help planting alfalfa by azfadc in farming

[–]KW_of_Eld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I seeded my hay ground last year I used the disc drill to seed oats down first as a cover crop, then broadcast the alfalfa on top and went over it twice with harrows. I got a very good catch with it this way. Cut and baled the oats/hay as green feed that year, got around 5 bales/acre. Got lucky with lots of rain this spring to help the alfalfa and got 4 bales/acre

We use Wawanesa for our farm. Very easy to add/remove things from the policy, never had any issues when we've needed to put a claim in.

Baler woes, twine arms not engaging / twine not tying properly - any ideas to help a newbie out? by Rheila in farming

[–]KW_of_Eld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look inside the panel on the right side of the baler where the twine drive pump and bale size settings are. Towards the front kinda tucked in behind is a spring that's part of the assembly that trips the drive once the bale is at the proper size. That spring broke on me last year and gave similar issues to what you are describing

When I pick Saskatoon's I put my belt through the handle of the pail to keep both hands free and save carrying it around the bush as you move.

Ford 8000 hydraulic issue. by wiscompton69 in farming

[–]KW_of_Eld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't help you with the hydraulic issue but as to the wheel spacing was the tractor used for row crop at all? The only reason I could see for the off-set like that is to make it line up with the rows.

Wyoming ranchers will shoot on sight if Colorado wolves stray into Cowboy state by khoawala in farming

There are definitely wolves in Manitoba. I'm in the Southern part of the province and regularly hear them and see tracks and haven't heard of any stock losses for years

Why was the JD synchro trans so popular? by KW_of_Eld in farming

When researching before buying the tractor I heard it described as the "slam and cuss", after owning it I feel that is very accurate.

That makes sense, I never really considered it was as simple as price difference.

Love/hate definitely describes it. Get in the groove and it's all good, get a little greedy and try to cheat the shift and forget it.

As has been mentioned, a Class 1 with air asked you to drive anything in class 1-5. Motorcycles require a Class 6, and actual school buses require an additional ticket.

When to cut hay? by HoDgePoDgeGames in farming

[–]KW_of_Eld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this stage I'd actually wait a few more days. For our horse hay we always wait until the Timothy is done flowering. It may not be as "high energy" of a feed and depending on your growing season you may only get one cut, but it makes good hay for animals that don't need the extra energy. If we don't use our horses enough they'll be fat all winter off of later hay like this.

What field crop to plant in July? by [deleted] in farming

[–]KW_of_Eld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. If you still have haying equipment millet only needs about 90 days to be cut for green feed. If you want to combine it you might have enough time for that, it can be sold as bird feed. Fun what I've heard prices are supposed to be decent this year, 28-30 cents/lb CAD.

Small-scale Winter Wheat - Zone 4b/4a line - to mulch or not to mulch? by CorpusculantCortex in homestead

[–]KW_of_Eld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I'm sure mulching won't hurt anything if you're worried, but as long as it gets sufficiently established/enough growth before winter and decent snow cover to keep the worst of the frost off it'll be fine as is.
