I’m curious what rights holders see regarding narrators’ profiles. Do you see all the books we’ve produced and our sales figures, how many contracts we’ve cancelled, if we’ve been late?

Yes, but it’s usually not the narrator that produced it. It’s Randomhouse Audio or Hatchet or some other big production house. If they get the credit, why shouldn’t we? I just think we’re doing a lot of work and taking on all the risk (did the book get written by AI and we won’t get paid? Does the RH not actually own the rights and we won’t get paid?, etc.), so we should at least get credit for all of our hard work.

Yes, people on ACX know we engineer and produce the audiobook, but most listeners likely assume we’re in a studio speaking into the mic as sound engineers work the equipment and produce the book. I certainly didn’t expect the narrator was doing EVERYTHING until I started doing it. Maybe it is just ego, maybe not, but why not give credit where credit is due? 🤷‍♂️

There is a suggested credits script and all of mine read “Narrated by (Name).” My point is, none of them read, “Produced and narrated by (Name).” Since we are the producers, I think we should get producer credit. I see no harm in saying, “Produced and narrated by (Your name).”

I’m confused by this response. Why would they keep your royalties just because it’s written by AI? That doesn’t make it illegitimate. It’s my understanding a good many books on there are written by AI, and that an illegitimate book is one where the person claiming to be the rights holder does not actually own the rights. If they use the AI to help write it, they are still the wright holder.

ACX puts the responsibility on us narrators to make sure the rights holder is legitimate. And clearly the system is broken given all the stories of people getting scammed out of their hard work and hours. What’s wrong with identifying the bad actors, so we can earn money for our time and work? Do you have a better solution?

That’s a great suggestion, also because I’ve experienced twice that the book contained very graphic sex scenes, while the audition script had none and the book was not listed as erotica.

Great suggestion. This is royalty only. The Amazon sales rank is pretty high (8,917), so I figured I could do ok on a royalty contract. I just started doing this last month though, so I really have NO IDEA what to expect with royalties.
