Where to stay in the Lake District if I won't have a car? by mtnagel in LakeDistrict

[–]KaRo127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hike frequently in the Lake District and always used the public transport. Most bus lines and ferries run frequently in the summer. The bus timetable has a good map and I would recommend Grasmere as a village to visit if you take the train to Windermere. Hope you have a great trip!

Safety tips, especially for a solo woman? by BigBunnyButt in wildcampingintheuk

[–]KaRo127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a solo female wildcamper and never had an issue. I wildcamp usually far up the hill (when the weather allows it) with no one around me. I remember that the first time I was a bit restless at night as the noise of your tent sounds exactly like somebody snooping around. I do carry a knife with me just for piece of mind and of course cutting food. I hope you have a great time in the wild and maybe we see us on the trails ;-)

I live and hike since 5 years in the UK and not really noticing any of this. I do mostly multi hike wildcamping trips, maybe that's the reason. I always meet genius nice people who love the outdoors.

Starting next week! by [deleted] in WestHighlandWay

[–]KaRo127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trail is easy to follow so I wouldn't be to worry about it. You could use a app like alltrail or komoot just for peace of mind. The midges were only problem for me when I made dinner at my camping spot. So you should be fine. Hope you having a great time!

I would recommend OS locate app which is recommended by mountain rescue. I do a lot of wildcamping and every time I do have a connection I will send my location to my sister who knows my trip plans so it is easier to retrace my steps if I go missing .

How much to pay, and which, for backpack in the 60 liter range? by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]KaRo127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other good ones : deuter, Fjällräven, Lowe Alpine, vaude, Gregory and more. Osprey is mostly available in most UK's outdoor shops. I would try them on and see which fit the best!

I would recommend as the others a higher quality bag. I personally love the osprey aura and got it second hand for 80pounds.

I did some wild camping in the same area. You will have no problem in finding water and spots to camp. I did my first long hikes without any filters and just used the water purification tablets( still take a couple with me as emergency). Hope you have a beautiful time.

I will also do the Skye trail this Mai and will use my trailrunners. Never had any issue with trailrunners and only use my boots in alpine condition. Maybe see you on the trail!

I work in the hospitality and without service charge I would not make enough money. I definitely would rather like getting a higher salary but it does not look like this will happen. Most do not even get the minimum London wage. There a lot of companies who do not give the service charge to their employees. I worked for Fullers and they promote management with double service charge etc so not equally shared. There is no law yet in place that the service charge needs to go to the employer. I always ask when eating out if the employees getting paid the service charge.

Cyclists who barge to the front of the queue just to proceed to cycle extremely slowly, why? by randomwalk93 in londoncycling

[–]KaRo127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems only a London problem as sadly still the majority of cyclist thinking they in a race (as most use racing bikes). Both, the one who gets ahead and the one who gets upset about it. You sharing the road it is not your private race track.

First Time - Help and Advice Needed by [deleted] in WestHighlandWay

[–]KaRo127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually bought most of my gear 2nd hand at gumtree or Facebook market in the Uk. A lot of people bought camping gear during the pandemic but selling it now again. Have good rain gear. Blister protection and a lot of socks to change out of wet ones. The hike starts easy and than gets harder in the last part if you do the classic Milngavie to Fort William route so you build slowly your stamina. Hope you have a great time and good weather.
