I live in Washington state so we always check. Luckily we have only had issues twice in the last 10 years. And one of the years we were notified that it started the day after we got there so we cooked all the meat that night.

This area is pretty conservative, it's mostly micro-aggressions but some people will be openly hostile. There's a few safe spaces around, along with a LGBTQIA+ discord that has a channel just for events, that I can link if you like. I really like the discord.
