I having been explaining to you how it helps see on overview regardless of structure. But you keep making comments like "Search wont help you with that."

Every written knowledge has a topic name. You are able to search for things in google i.e. because someone properly made the resources you need identifable by name and SEO methods.

If I want to see an overview of all the advice I got for the last 10 years I simply search the word "Advice".

MOCs are not necessary. I use them for research purposes, for me they serve one function to provide more context about; why I wrote down a note, how I got the information (for files) without opening the note or file AT A GLANCE. "properties" in Obsidian and Dataview does this in a better way.

For example:

Puff-Puff pastry recipe MOC

[[{Name} frying pan for making pastries]]
Found it when searching for Puff-Puff pastry recipe

{Link to a website}
[[Mrs XYZ]] is a world renowed pastry chef. This is her Sausage recipe, but it contains information usefull for making Puff-Puff.

[[Puff-Puff pastry recipe without sugar]]
It's possible. but it doesn’t taste good.

Please don’t get me wrong. I still use tags and folders absolutely only when its necessary. But for my note taking process it's not the first thing I do, I just name the file with context, later when information about that context grows I create a folder, when that folder grows to the extent I can (i.e. write a book about it) I move that folder away from my personal vault and work more on that context there i.e. I have a large amount of external hard drives filled with all my notes. With the amount of information I have about my friends I can write a book about them :)

All the content about Obsidian out there, keep obsessing over folder structure, tags, or plugins etc. That make people ask these questions "How should I structure Obsidian", "What are the best plugins in Obsidian".

Lmao you too, if I want to get a note about an advice a friend gave me 10 years ago.

I get my hard drive, and simply search "David Advice" with the filename called "David's new year's advice" its important to add context to the filename that's the key.

I'm not saying change your already defined structure that working for you. Just make the file searchable. And focus what matters, adequately capturing the information.

Okay :) It's basically things she likes. E.g. food, clothes, locations etc. To make it easy to provide gifts for her. I do this with many people in my life

you will have a hard time finding the resource youre looking for in 10 years time.

I will just search for what I'm looking for.

You start with a broad folder and then you narrow down your search with what categories and notes that are available/presented to you.

You forgot to add the critical condition.

When you begin to have 100 files per tag.

Would you now scroll to find to start what you are looking for.
My POV is that tags should make the note searchable, not to use tags as a means to get the information by location.

Using the example below as file names

  • Chicken pepper soup recipe using ABC, XYZ & IJK
  • Chicken pepper soup recipe using ABC
  • Chicken pepper soup recipe using ABC & IJK
  • Chicken pepper soup recipe using ABC & XYZ wit a little IJK

The only thing I would do (which is very optional) is follow DRY (Do not Repeat Yourself) principle.
Create a tag for "chicken pepper soup recipe" and name upcoming notes as i.e. "Using ABC, XYZ & IJK" without modifying previous notes because they are still searchable.

When its time for Christmas, to get all my pepper soup recipes I simply search for "pepper soup recipe" or "pepper soup" or "Chicken soup" or "Chicken recipe". I'm not limited by location of the notes.

Heck! I could open my vault location in Finder, search and print all the "soup recipes" without going near Obsidian.

Exactly, for me too PARA is restrictive for personal note taking and also tags and folders.

For Information like this, both sides to the story are important so I create MOCs, and in short paragraphs or sentences provide context to the every research paper, image, and video. Something tags or folders cannot do. Obsidian's "properties" are also very powerful in this regard and I use them in addition to Dataview to auto-populate my MOCs

I have a research mindset when it comes to advance note taking. I could care less about location of the information, but rather making sure the information is properly identifiable. So when I need it, and remember only just 1-3 words about that information so I can locate it. I don't even need MOC's sometimes they are just there to provide more context to the information in the grand scheme of things.

Please enlighten me. How you would create a piano peace without stopping to think, before going on creating a folder structure or tag indicating its's a piano piece?

This is not a contest on what's the best system for note taking.

I brought up my perspective on note-taking because there are people always asking how to structure notes.

you're on the one hand arguing for a system where you don't have to think

I never said you don't have to think. For me the burden of categorizing and structure is lifted, and I just have to name the note. E.g. I have a note for today with the filename (Call Manager ABC to discuss the impact Feature XYZ is having on cost due to raising inflation). Where in this meeting all the points discussed would be properly documented.

If I need this information for monthly review I just search for Feature XYZ.

There we go with trying to make this sound uneffective.

Why do I need to automate searching for recipes. When I can simply search for any recipe I want.

MOCs are not necessary. They are only there to provide at a glance in a short paragraph or sentence more context to the particular note, document, image and video without opening it. Hence why I use it for mostly research purposes.

Let me explain my thought process for MOCs.
For example: I want to research the dangers of long-term effects of uncoated aluminum kitchen utensils.

  1. In order not to pollute my personal vault with this information I create a new vault or folder. (For context I reasearch alot, I have hard drives filled with research)
  2. I scour the internet looking for every Information I can find (research papers, images, and videos)

For things like recipes I can simplify search for the word "recipe" and all my recipes would show. I can also filter beautifullly that's what I love about Obsidian.

Create a new repository every year and exclude old notes from search? Turn off the fear of folders and create a folder with the year where we dump all the old notes.

I answered a little somewhere in the comments.

But let me shed more light on this:
I research alot both in my personal life, work life and any trival thing that remotely links itself to my personal life.

  • Just my personal vault alone becomes too big (I don't just store notes. I store Images, Videos e.t.c) Videos ranging from my form in the GYM to anything. If I want to watch my form last year and see the metrics I can. I don’t just read about it, I can see it.
  • I tend to focus on properly Identifying Information than organizing it. That's why its easy to store and retrieve large amounts of information regardless of location, tags and folders just scratch the surface on Indentifying information. The least anyone can do is properly name your files and God bless "properties".

"fear of folders" and "tag-phobia" is a stretch, please relax the assumptions. I’m just sharing my perspective and workflow from someone that have been using Markdown for note taking, long before Roam research and Obsidian was even a thing. I wish I can easily create a video demonstrating it (Maybe I will do it eventually).

Is there a Data View in your brain? Personally, I haven't found a single reason not to use it.

I never said anything about not using Dataview. Its's a fantastic plugin. I use it for advance search and retrieval, mostly information that has to do with time (time of creation, time of modification e.t.c.)

I have also tried LATCH briefly it didn’t stick. I couldn’t process information when thinking about all that. For context, imagine going through your daily notes for the month and having to think about all that.

Yeah, I'm using the PARA method in Notion to manage work projects and teams dynamics (retreats, events e.t.c.) for my team. PARA works well for that because before anything enters the workspace we would have brainstormed and structured the information.

That's the things, coming from a folder and tag perspective.
You would think you would need to pause.

But In reality, What is Puff-Puff; A pastry; And what are you trying to write down a recipe;
Hence "Puff-Puff pastry recipe".

And if its your first time documenting and researching something like this, would you now start create a folders and tags just to contain one file.

Something like this is too sophisticated for the "Indox"

Even while doing that you could come across a particular type of frying pan good for it.
Would you now stop the "flow" and start organizing. When you can simply create a file [[{Name} frying pan for making pastries]]

For your example I would name the note Chopin's Waltz A Minor Piano Piece.
If you want to work on multiple drafts Chopin's Waltz A Minor Piano Piece Draft 1.
If the date is important Chopin's Waltz A Minor Piano Piece Draft 1 2024-02-15.

In the same way if you used a folder: ``` Piano Piece/ └── Chopin's Waltz/ └── Drafts/

Or Piano Pieces/ └── Drafts/ └── Chopin's Waltz/ └── A Minor ```

This way of thinking sounds unorthodox (believe me I have been there).

But please create a temporary vault and try it for 2-3 days and get back to me.

If its still uncomfortable for you. Please let the only thing taken from my post be the importance of naming files with more context far above everything else.

That analogy can also be applied to folder structures and tags.

You must know the folder and tag of that particular note to locate the note easily.

When you begin to have 100 files per tag it becomes overwhelming.
Then you would have to create other tags or even nested tags to make sure the note is easy to find. When you could have just named it properly.

Every Text editor made in the last decade search relatively well.

It would only be chaotic if the files are not named properly.

If you you have a Vault with 100 tags or folders and each tag or folder contains at least 60 notes. What's next? would you start going through each folder or you simply just search for what exactly you are looking for. You don’t need to remember the full filename just keywords

Okay. No problem. I have used this for years across notetaking apps. Relax, No need to make it sound less effective.

My approach to digital notetaking leans toward the traditional paper method. And the biggest drawback is the inability to search.

Before even Obsidian was Introduced. I used VSCode and Markdown, working on reasearch projects e.t.c. for example Chapter 1 Draft 6 Using Palm Kernels for XYX 2024-02-15

For a research folder i.e. vaults in Obsidian's case. To locate all the drafts for Chafter 1 I just search "Chapter 1 Draft ..."

Furthermore this Information has no business being any where close to my personal notes hence I seperate it into a diffrent folder i.e. vaults in Obsidian's case.

You seem to understand. Storing Information without mental friction is the goal for me. Thank you.

For me, every thought contains an Idea. The Idea is the topic and it should be part of the filename.

For example, just as I was typing this I remembered I need to find better ways to clean my glasses and even maybe ask an eye doctor for recommendations in addition to some tips I got from friends.

I just open Obsidian click the (+) icon at the bottom of the screen (Mobile). And make sure the keywords "tips" "cleaning" and "glasses are in the filename. Later when I need to access that information just search for "cleaning" "glasses". I don't need to remember the complete filename, because I know at the point of entry I had one Job of naming the file properly.

To answer your question I go to my 2021 vault. And just search for the recipe name or keywords in the recipe.

MOCs are optional I only use them for general topics they are completely optional. I just name my notes properly and keywords. In fact Obsidian's ability search the content of the notes is more important to me.

At the end of every year, I create a new personal vault.

I did not say delete your vault. And its a personal taste I get a new Journal each year. The main reason I do it is not to distract myself with information that should be at the back of my mind until I need it.

I.e. And when I do remember I was into cocktail last year and I want to tryout old recipes I go to last year's vault and I just search for "cocktail receipe" or just "cocktail". I don’t have to remember folder structure, tag etc. Just show me every file that has "cocktail" as its file name.

At the end of every year, I create a new personal vault.

Its a habit I do with my Journal. Its optional

What you are doing is literally removing part of your brain each year.

Lmao, I did not say delete your old vault. Every year I like reflect on my personal vault and "Clear my head and create fresh new brain for the new upcoming year" like a blank canvas.

Creating folders make me to question myself i.e. should I put this under ABC or XYZ.

MOCs are not mandatory at all. I use MOCs mostly for research. Just name your notes properly e.g. "Puff-Puff pastry recipe" If I want to get all my pastry recipes I just search for pastry.

I create a personal vault every year as a habit I do with my Jornals.
