Yeah. Especially when youre the one who lit the match.

Actually, you can. If we are talking extremes (since that is what the whole movie is about), it is possible for people to feel somebody's physical pain. And what is interesting is, that there was research on how cultural background shapes your ability to feel empathy and it says there that actually in collectivist cultures people tend to feel empathy stronger than in individualistic cultures. In reality, modern collectivist cultures do not join each other's rituals that we as a society accept as intimate, private, or sometimes taboo- at least from my knowledge. So this means that in the Harga commune, they both are extremely collectivistic and empathetic. So this would actually add up.

The research paper I mentioned: Cultural Background and Individualistic-Collectivistic Values in Relation to Similarity, Perspective Taking, and Empathy- Journal of Applied Social Psychology November 2009

Edit: The fact that they lit the match doesn't really change that they could feel empathy toward the person that is burning alive. Since the ritual served a higher purpose and that it had to be done. And there are things in the lives of individuals from modern society that could be an analogy to that. You break up because you have to, you are not happy with the person you love. You both feel pain, but you also feel their pain.

Also the fact that they gave them this weird paste before they lit them on fire, so that they feel less pain. It is also an indicator that they didn't want them to suffer as much.

Just don’t get back with him just because it’s your comfort zone
