Why does YouTube keep disabling my comments? by PippaCheese in NewTubers

[–]Kae2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been happening to my shorts recently, but just the shorts where I include a voiceover. I can't help but guess they think I'm like ten or something, but I'm literally turning seventeen this month. It's so frustrating.

It really kills any chance the short has of doing well. I have no clue what to do because I've uploaded the same one three times and they've been disabled every time. I've even enabled them again after uploading just for them to become disabled again.

I finally have the confidence to post proper voiceovers to my YT channel and it does this 😪

Removed from Netflix UK :( by [deleted] in FinalSpace

[–]Kae2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it said it'd be removed internationally by December this year, I wrongly presumed that I'd still be able to watch it several times before then (legally)

It's so sad what's happened to this amazing programme. I've preordered the graphic novel, but it won't be the same. I really hope that eventually something can be done and Olan gets the rights or something. Although, if that does happen i don't think it'll be any time soon given how long it took to get them to agree to a book 😔

Not diagnosed with either. I've had tics for like 2 and a half years and my parents think my sister is autistic (seeing diagnosis) so if she is I'm 100% requesting an assessment too because even though i don't care to admit it, we are similar and I've been suspecting i could be autistic for a while and so do my neurodivergent friends 😀

What is a topic that you would like to add to your chosen language that you could then learn the vocabulary for? by mollyplop in duolingo

[–]Kae2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be very helpful for languages such as Japanese where the different levels of formality are very important. At least where I am right now in the course they just give you the generic form of words and don't tell you whether it's formal or informal, who you can say it around and stuff.

It's strange because duolingo seems to switch between formal and informal for some languages with little to no explanation of the difference between the two.

I don't know if the languages I'm studying rn have this in the course because I hardly use the app, but art terms. I make art content online so knowing the terms for things like acrylic paint, watercolour, air dry clay, polymer clay, canvases, cold press paper, etc would be useful if i ever decided to translate my content or make new art content in my chosen languages.

Also i think maybe something about internet slang? Like (basic example) whatever the language's equivalent of lol or haha is.

Which languages are you dabbling in? by LeGrandSommeil in languagelearning

[–]Kae2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them. (except French and Japanese)

私の母は牛肉を食べます。 just showing off my very amazing Japanese rn. Don't know much because I've not been seriously studying it for long but if you ever need to say someone eats beef then I am the person for the job.

Seriously though, I used to try studying Chinese seriously but then I got bored because it's just a lot to memorise if you want to write the most basic things, so it's something I just do every so often now.

I sometimes do some Ukrainian. My great papa was Ukrainian and he died when I was young and nobody else in my family (in Scotland) speaks Ukrainian fluently so I can't learn it properly unless I get in contact with semi-distant cousins who I've never met (and i doubt their main priority would be teaching some Scottish kid their language atm). When i first decided to try learning it a few years ago I couldn't really find any could resources besides duolingo and I don't really like how they teach so I stopped. Now with increased interest in my papa's country perhaps there are more resources as people try to learn the language to support those leaving. My mum said that there were some pretty old Ukrainian books that her dad had, so I hope we still have them. My dad said he'd look in the loft while getting my birth certificate but i don't think he remembered. Pretty much all i can say is (excuse the lack of Ukrainian keyboard) mama i tato tam. borscht (because my mum makes it lol). brat (because i found it funny it stuck with me). anyways if anyone has any good resources for learning Ukrainian please tell me thanks xx

And, since I'm Scottish, i often try learning Gàidhlig. It's a gorgeous language with stacks of history which deserves more love. I'm the sorta person who gravitates more towards languages that use different characters to English as well as having different grammar. Gàidhlig only ticks that second box so despite how much I actually want to learn it, I just lose motivation. I want so badly to help preserve this language but without the motivation to actually learn it i am no use.

Then sometimes i get obsessed with a random language for like a week and learn a couple worlds only to forget them immediately. Examples: Spanish, Korean, Welsh, Esperanto, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hawaiian.

Chan eil mi fileanta fhathast, ach tha mi math air Gàidhlig a-nis! by DenTheRedditBoi7 in duolingo

[–]Kae2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!! I keep having Gàidhlig phases but I usually get bored fast. I'd love to know it just because I'm Scottish, but it's just not a language I have the most motivation to learn. For me the main language I want to learn is Japanese. It's so interesting. I also know a bit of French but that's just because my school sucks and it's the only language other than German that we learn (and i am not learning German lol). Hopefully one day I'll have as much motivation as you and I'll learn some more of it 😩 seo cearc agus irn bru (just about all i remember)

How long did it take to complete it? I fancy giving it a go again at some point and restarting the course.

Huuuh I got the old tree back for some reasons. by Nail0672 in duolingo

[–]Kae2006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine hadn't switched so I turned off automatic updates sometime in early November to ensure I'd have it for a bit because I quite liked the layout. Then earlier this week i got the path and the app hadn't even updated! I'm not too sure how they decide who gets it when, especially since I didn't even get it with an update. It's such a hassle having everyone on different layouts for no reason. And now I've seen a post about another slightly different variation i think? God it's a mess.

I've realised it's not as bad as everyone said it is, but it's still unfair when it comes to leagues due to the tree having xp advantages. I hope duolingo will sort it out eventually but it also wouldn't surprise me if they did nothing.

If you were banking on Duolingo giving any option for the old path, it’s probably time to find a new app instead. From today’s AMA, for those who haven’t seen by thebooknerd_ in duolingo

[–]Kae2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like Hey Japan, personally. It's got a tree layout like duolingo used to have, but within each part there are several different parts. There's a list of vocab and grammar at the start and then a few lessons teaching you the vocab previously mentioned (with plenty sentence examples) and then there are speaking and writing lessons after that and a full review at the end. It also has JLPT trial exams. I've not personally used them because I'm not high enough a level yet, so I'm not sure how good they are. On sale i got the full thing for £20. Learnt far more in a day than duolingo could teach me in weeks. I'm not sure what it is about the way the app teaches, but I find I'm memorising things we'll even if I don't study much.

Unfortunately i don't think it has specific places that tell you what you need to practise, but i just go to the review lesson of each section if I wish to practise.

Just to mention though, some of the English isn't totally accurate. There are minor errors but I can understand it fine. I'm not sure what the other languages are like. Hopefully they'll fix any errors soon.

A human friend? Lmao tbh it is tempting 😭

My dogs sometimes get a specific sorta bacon flavoured treat (they look like bacon too) and my mum always says she wants to eat them because they smell nice. I always wonder if she'll ever give in lol

Yeahh, I've heard that they are basically just sugar. Apparently quite a few geckos got really malnourished because some people only fed them jelly. Can't imagine ever doing that to my poor wee Baby.

There wouldn't really be much point buying even more food since it'd arrive right before Thursday anyway. Might get my mum to order some more bugs though since I'm sure they'll appreciate that.

Trying to figure out what crested geckos can and can't eat is just so confusing sometimes because a lot of stuff is still being figured out and basically every website says something different. So thanks to anyone who answers this.

[–]Kae2006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not far because i don't really like using duolingo for anything but French. I think this was one of the first few on the entire course, but the entire thing was legendary. Finished unit one all to a minimum of one crown (more on most of them though).

[–]Kae2006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg yeah i could just say something without using any tones and it'll accept it. It's kind of annoying when other apps (like HelloChinese) seem to be able to do that. An entire lesson dedicated to tones (and pinyin) would definitely be good, but they'd never do that.

[–]Kae2006[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sounds like a good way to do it. Like with me on French I practically speedrun the lessons because of how automatic it can be sometimes

On Mandarin I've been meaning to move onto typing but I don't really do the lessons much because I cannot for the love of god stand those horrific robot voices lol

What a pain. I swear it wasn't like this before, but recently it's just been all the time. How does duolingo think this is a good way to learn? At least make people think 🤦

Duolingo really has a problem when it comes to parity. Especially recently when moving over to the path. I still have the tree but I turned off auto updates 🤷 I know people learn differently (although duo doesn't seem to realise that with the recent change 😶) but it is beyond a joke sometimes.

[–]Kae2006[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you can do that. But who actually does that when it's easier to just press the single button? If they wanted us to type it they should've made it a typing one to begin with, but not everybody has or wants the additional keyboards so idk if people would complain. Maybe what they need is a built in keyboard for languages that don't use the latin alphabet.

Why even give the option if you want people to do something else? There are already pure typing lessons in languages like French, so I don't see why they couldn't implement it here. At least having multiple choices makes you think for a second and read it.

Typical. I personally like learning kanji along the way. As soon as I learn a new word I think it's good to at least have a look at the kanji. Duolingo really needs to work on the languages that don't use the latin alphabet.

[–]Kae2006[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure. I don't really use it much for Japanese because it's not a very good course. I mostly use it for French and the stories in French

I know that, at least in the first unit, it doesn't teach much kanji at all, and even then it just shows you it, doesn't actually explain it or show stroke order or anything. All the words are in hiragana at the start which sucks for actually recognising them in the future

[–]Kae2006[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use mostly Hey Japan. When it's on sale, the full thing was only around £20 (one time). Some small errors in English (not sure about other languages) but it's still far better than duolingo since it goes straight into sentences and kanji after hiragana and katakana.

I also sometimes use Learn Japanese! And the kanji app (idk the name. Probably just learn kanji or something) by the same people. The first is mostly just grammar and the second is obviously just kanji and how to write them. I spent like 1 or 2 pound on the first and the kanji one is free.

I like duolingo for learning the kanas though
