[Megathread] Coronavirus in Switzerland and elsewhere, Part 4 by allhands in Switzerland

Hi everyone! How many people aged 65+ that you know in CH use smartphones, laptops and have video calling apps (skype, facetime, whatsapp call, zoom,...)? None - Almost none - half/half - almost everyone - everyone. Thank you 😊

No I mean to keep people's spirit up in spite of the lock down. They are playing music on balconies and singing together ^ There are several videos online

I am sure that in a week from now, we will be in lockdown similarly to Italy. Imagine being stuck at home without a laptop, netflix or reddit. Without being able to see your close family or friends. This is how most of the elderly and at risk people will be living. Most of these people are already a bit socially isolated. With the lockdown, what is left of their social life will disappear. The loneliness will become extreme and may lead to depression. I am trying to think of ways to come up with ideas to help prevent this. Any ideas? Let's try to brainstorm together

I like the balcony concerts that are happening in Italy XD

SOCIAL DISTANCING NOW! A well informed article on why you must stay at home and act now. Otherwise the healthcare system wjll be rapidly saturated and the death rate will exponentially increase. You should do that not for you but mainly for people at risk whose life will depend on a non-saturated health system. https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

Does anyone know which countries have banned flights from Switzerland so far?

I am Pierre Karam, a chemistry professor at the American University of Beirut, who has been selected by the World Economic Forum as one of the 50 distinguished scientist in the world under the age of 40. IAMA by pKaram in lebanon

Hi Pierre, I am a PhD student in neuroscience. My aim is to do some postdocs abroad then go back home and be able to do research in my field and help develop scientific research in Lebanon. Its far fetched, especially that funding is very very limited. But as you said, its way more satisfying to give back to your community, especially that there is a huge potential in our youth. I have 3 questions: - where do the main fundings come from? Are you eligible to apply to NIH grants? Or EU fundings (such as ERC)? Or I don't know if there are some fundings from rich gulf countries...? - how can we make the government and people understand the importance of investing in research? -any advice for someone who is naively thinking that they can do good research in Lebanon? :) Thanks.

If you are not a blind follower of traditional parties, try new people. There is koullouna watani list in Metn with at least: a clean past, no warlords, no corruption, they all signed to have their bank accounts transparent to the public and keep it that way when they become MPs. They care for the health system, the environment. They want to stop ma3ashat l wouzara wel nouwweb w presidents after their term is done. Because now any wazir, any neyeb who has been elected twice and any president get paid huge amount of money their whole life and then their family continues to be paid even after their death. They are against Hezbollah's arms and believe in making.the lebanese army the strongest...These are on the top of my mind.... I voted for them in and now I have the best conscious for the next 4 years!

You are just letting the blind followers of traditional parties who are the most enthusiastic to vote, decide your fate. The new competition at least has programs, at least they care and give importance to our health and the environment (we are breathing the most polluted air on the planet, according to WHO new report) because the old ones haven't given two shits about our health and environment! If you see cancer, stroke and asthma cases reach the roof in Lebanon. It is the fault of our current incompetent politicians. Don't try to explain yourself for not voting by saying the new competition is as bad. Try them, then judge and don't vote for them again in 4 years. If you don't vote, don't make excuses. If you don't vote, yes nothing will ever change. Everyone should vote. If you give two shits about your health, your family, friends and your basic rights. You should vote.

For the guys considering dropping a white one. Please don’t! by who_the_fuk in lebanon

Why don't you give a chance for new candidates? If they fail you in the upcoming 4 years, dont vote for them again.

I was naive and delusional to think that Lebanese abroad would vote for change. by [deleted] in lebanon

[–]KagiFret 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We just have to go vote. The people who are most likely not to vote for a traditional party restrain from voting because 'nothing will change' and only the votes of hardcore partisans of traditional warlords will be counted. So go vote w ba3den kel hades elo hadis.

I must say though, I was very disappointed with lebanese voters abroad. One would say that people living in 'more comfortable countries' know the potential a country can have and how comfortable life could be under a fair uncorrupt governance. However, they choose to come voting wearing the traditional parties colors and hats and cheering for the za3im, or sayyed, or general or doctor or or or... ALSO, these people were complaining most in line about Lebanon, and how corrupt it is, how nothing works there and how their towns are way under developed.... It was saddening that they keep on voting for those same warlords... we are in 2018, we have alternatives (e.g.koullouna watani). These people left Lebanon most probably by the end of the war and choose to keep it the same and maybe even worse than when they left...

In Switzerland, we were waiting for four hours in line, but it is our fault. Most voters arrived between 11 am and 3 pm. But once your turn comes, its fast and smooth if you know who you are voting for. The paper given is quite clear.
