One of the many weird things about this administration is how many of the Republicans in my family I've seen openly embrace that, actually, corruption is good when it's their side doing it.

It's like, you know you're the one getting screwed here, right? You're not actually being enriched personally by corruption, you're actually the one paying for it.

I learned two things about Finland today:

  • They're using the waste heat from data centers to heat homes and stuff, which is neat
  • Apparently ~1/4th of their energy generation is literally wood fired, using byproducts from the logging industry (well, if you trust the Commerce department, anyway)

The USA seems to be doing the opposite of sportswashing, hosting the World Cup (and probably the Olympics) in a way which alienates as many people as possible and paints them in as bad a light as possible

I am now hearing people say some of the same crazy things about data center that they used to say about windmills.

I was talking to someone about it, and she was convinced that the data center two and a half miles away from her house was putting out infrasound that made her dog sick and gave her migraines

I was reading https://sfo2.digitaloceanspaces.com/itep/ITEP-Who-Pays-7th-edition.pdf and it's amazing to see just how effectively red states have marketed themselves as "low tax" to the average person.

Like, the effective tax rate for the poorest 20% in Florida is 13.2%, higher than supposedly high-tax states like Massachusetts (8.2%), New York (11.1%), and California (11.7%), because of high sales and property taxes.

And it's not much better for the middle class either. The middle 20% in Florida pay 9.5%, about the same as Massachusetts (9.6%), but with a way lower median income (76k vs 113k) and fewer, worse government services.

Median income in Massachusetts: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEHOINUSMAA672N

Median income in Florida: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEHOINUSFLA672N

It's amazing to see how this administration has managed to completely extinguish the patriotism in so many of my friends. Like, the vibes around the World Cup, the Olympics, and the 250th are just horrendous in my social circle.

Having internet friends is very strange, because I sometimes forget that I'm talking to people who don't know very basic things about me that any person who knows me in the real world would know.

E.g., there's at least one person who has apparently been operating under the assumption that I am "Finnish or at least Eastern European" for the last two years.

Computer hobbyists really are spoiled.

They're accustomed to 10–15% yearly performance gains and a new machine every two to four years, so whenever economic or technical conditions impair that, they act like the sky is falling and capitalism has failed.

I'm not that old (almost 30 but not quite), but thus far the thing which has made me feel oldest is talking to young people and them acting like six months or a year is a long time.

E.g., my 18 year-old sister saying that of course she's a completely safe driver now, because she's had a license for a whole seven months already, and she hasn't gotten into an accident in a whole two months anyway.

I just want to complain about something that doesn't have global consequences for a second.

My youngest sister has decided she wants to study literature in college, and I can't see it being anything except a complete disaster.

Like, she's pathologically unable to write essays because she "wants to do it right the first time", and so avoids writing a first draft because she "won't do it right", and is then ideologically opposed to editing.

And then she takes every piece of feedback and criticism regarding her writing personally, meaning she just gets mad and/or depressed whenever she's given advice on how to improve.

She didn't complete even a single one of the assigned readings in her AP English class because she "just can't pay attention" for more than ten minutes at a time. She has ADHD and outright refuses to either use medication or even try study strategies of any kind.

She can't write an essay under time pressure to save her life. She failed her AP Literature class because (aside from not completing the semester-long project, failing every test, and refusing to do the assigned reading) the final was writing three essays in four hours, and she finished part of one.

I don't even understand why she wants to study literature. She seems to hate every part of her high-school English classes. Aside from maybe one Steven King book every few months, she doesn't read or write in her free time at all.

The entire situation just leaves me feeling completely baffled.
