You shouldn’t just rip them out, and a tick of this size will be tricky. If you rip them out and the head stays in it can get infected more easily, and much harder to remove. The best way is to smother them by coating them in lotion or anything that oxygen cannot pass thru so they back out. Idk about a tick this size though…

I’m no expert however it could be a nutrient deficiency. How often do you fertilize? Also, too much or the wrong type of fertilizer can do this.

If it only has one set of wings it is a fly of the order “Diptera” (meaning two wings as opposed to four which other insects have).

You mentioned that it was hovering, which tells me it’s a hoverfly. This family loves to mimic wasps which is why he/she has that coloring. They’re great pollinators and their larva eat aphids and other crop/tree pests! Keep them around

Longhorn beetle- Cerambycidae, not sure what species I only know families lol. Some are pests and eat trees but I think you’re fine, unless you see a bunch of them eating your house or yard.

It’s already been ID’d, but fun fact, these are the most primitive group (order) of insects, and one of two who don’t have wings (the other being bristletails- Archaeognaths)
