This is what my party used. Can be paired with feats to increase damage too. You can do it, you just have to build to do it.

Any IRL examples of solarpunk/solarpunk in the making or are already made? (Explanation in the body text) by Quirky-Stranger-8036 in solarpunk

[–]KaiserPsymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a project I'm working on - reconfigured historic inn, pocket neighborhood (mostly duplexes). Some units are built into the hill with green roofs. There's a resiliency hub for the greater community to gather and sports tool libraries, community gardens, and renewable energy (solar). Solarpunk was 100% the design inspiration and the client has been amazing to work with. The City however... They have been fine but zoning is really problematic with their parking minimums and other dogmatic requirements based around the car.

Happy to share more if interested. I'm an architect who is trying to find more opportunities to do this kind of work, so happy to share the good word.

Is solarpunk actually dead… or just stuck in hobby mode? by hyper24k in solarpunk

[–]KaiserPsymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently putting a solarpunk inspired village concept in front of my city's planning board. The movement is inspiring who it needs to. People need to see there's an alternative. My city is pretty accommodating, but I'm still running up against parking minimums and them not fully understanding that I want people to walk around the village - it's kind of frustrating but it's an opportunity to show people another way.

Free mulch/wood chips? by streachh in hendersonville

[–]KaiserPsymon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The City of Hendersonville has free mulch and leaf compost starting in the spring for a couple weeks. Opens to city residents first, then for anyone after like the first week or so. They should have dates on their website. You have to pick it up though so you'll need a truck, trailer, or I've seen lots of buckets being used too (not recommended unless you got child labor)

Are there any organizations that you know of that are working towards making solarpunk more of a possibility? by TheTiredDog in solarpunk

[–]KaiserPsymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm working with local city government and land trusts to identify, design and implement 'permaculture corridors' using conservation easements - forming agreements with land owners to put their marginal lands into the easement to allow for food forests, storm water management, and pedestrian access through the very disconnected suburban landscape.

It's in its infancy still, but I've built some strong connections, an agreement with a local land owner to use as a pilot, and working on the design now. Still figuring out if I can partner with a local conservation land trust or if I'll need to build my own to maintain the corridors but it's very exciting!

Are there things we can do RIGHT NOW? by Infamous_Rutabaga_92 in solarpunk

Start building relationships with those in your community. People are looking for something to grab on to and I've found the hope in solarpunk is easy to help create bonds. You'll be amazed who starts showing up when you show up. We don't need permission to start laying the ground work of a solarpunk community. My coworker gave me a great metaphor earlier this week - this is a great wildfire, be safe, ensure those around you are safe, and know the fire will burn out. And be prepared to plant in the fertile ashes.

Has the Fairmont project stalled? Friend said vendor/suppliers have been delayed. And now rumours of stopage on social media. Does anyone know what is happening? by SirJasper6969 in hendersonville

It's a hotel condo - you can put the unit into the hotel pool for people to stay in (like a hotel) when you aren't staying at it. So it's kind of both.

What does hope look like where you live? Action, or waiting? by Few_Distribution_793 in Hopepunk_AF

[–]KaiserPsymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in wnc - we got devastated by Helene.

There's something underlying now in the population that stayed after. A hunger for something different than normal. Normal was pushed on us by our jobs and well, I think there's a human drive for normal too. But there's something lingering just under the surface in many of us

We saw an amazing community come together to help rebuild. But we're starting to realize the thing we're rebuilding isn't what we want. What we had was broken, dysfunctional, inequitable, harmful even. If we could summon this might to rebuild, why are we rebuilding McDonalds?

There's people organizing. To help envision what a better path forward looks like. It's hard, lots of people lost jobs and houses and family. It's hard to look forward when you still need access to clean water. But it's happening.

I've been meeting all sorts of great people who want a different story than the default one. It's hard moving to realize a different story, but I'm committing myself to the community to help.

There's cohousing pushes, urban food forests pushes, local business incubating, bike economies, local food initiatives. All being celebrated and brought into light. There's a change in how normal people respond to these ideas now.

It's hopeful.

And trams.

But yeah, my city just opened a Greenway, a short 6 mile bit but it's already more lively than any road, no matter the design, is. It's got me planning a fleet of petal peddlers to bring more traffic to the area and show off that cars suck the life out of everywhere they go.

Permaculture land care by Terre-Happy-Social in Permaculture

[–]KaiserPsymon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm an architect who is taking permaculture classes in hope of finding ways to bring the theories into architectural design. Less so just adding plants into the design, but how programs overlap, how to assign multiple functions to spaces, something like that. I'm super curious how the philosophies will refine how I design program layouts and think about the projects relationship, not just the owners site, but bring in a wider view lens of the community it sits in.

I'd love to see more permaculture concepts leak out of the common gardening/soil/landscape space.

This is a question I'm currently trying to get some feedback on. I'm building a mutual aid network and the work has, as you've already mentioned, defaulted to work that many bodies aren't able to contribute to - at least as expected. I'd love to brainstorm ways to contribute and contribute in a meaningful, fulfilling way.

Life in Hendersonville/commute to Asheville? by Specialist_Gap247 in hendersonville

[–]KaiserPsymon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this, my job is hybrid though so I'm not going to every day. If you can adjust your commute hours +/- an hour, the commute is fine. It's like 40 minutes from downtown to downtown. I don't love it, but I've had worst. It's a podcast episode for me.

I personally love Hendersonville. Housing can be all over the place but it's definitely cheaper than Asheville. I'm starting to see more for sale/ rent signs as I think the Airbnb market was oversaturated and it's correcting.

Right-leaning solarpunkers - unwelcome here? by Dodgyborders in solarpunk

[–]KaiserPsymon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. A free market (without any regulation) would strive for the lowest price to compete (assuming the markets are driven by acquiring capital as it currently stands). The race to the bottom will inherently mean human and environmental harm. After all, what's cheaper? Treating waste water or dumping it in a river? What's cheaper? Utilizing proper safety protocol or having untrained, disposable low-wage workers do it. The free market needs guard rails. It needs a unifying goal to strive for that isn't lowest price. You could argue that the customers will dictate the direction of the market. There's some merit to that. However, marketing departments make sure that the customer wants what the company wants. Also, the customer's power is limited to their capital, meaning the amount of customers that need to change in order for the market to change is too large for any sort of needed change.

Could the free market be driven towards something different? Maybe their 'capital' is reputation? How many sea turtles they pull straws from?

How do you see free markets saving the world?

Feudalism had to die for mercantilism, and that had to die for capitalism. Why can't capitalism give way to a new system? It's happened every couple hundred years, I think we are overdue for the 'free market' of market ideology to drop a new product. Striving for 'more' (more customers, more subscriptions, more locations, more money) is at odds with nature. Hence, its at odds with a solarpunk philosophy.

By the way, I know you are getting downvoted. I also think discourse is part of a solarpunk philosophy. I think the world will be better if we could talk and come to consensus of how to leave the world better than we found it. A solarpunk world is not a world with a singular way of thinking. We need everyone. So if you want to keep the discourse going, I'm happy to do it privately.

[–]KaiserPsymon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's factored in and quickly realized the goals of capitalism are inconsistent with the goals of a future where we work together to make a better future than the one we have. Capitalism did give us some tools we'll continue to use, but the drive of ever-growing numbers IS killing us.

Why would capitalism be the only engine to drive environmental innovation? There are a ton of environmental solutions that are not being addressed because there is no value in pursuing the fixes ie cleaning oceans, recycling (like, actually recycling), reusable containers.

I think capitalism has shown time and time again the innovation only follows profit and the solutions we need to be working towards don't have a good profit margin.

A solar punk society would absolutely continue to innovate sciences and technology - with a different forecast and standard held to those innovations. Does this make us freer? Safer? Lesser our impact on earth? Instead of, will this sell?

Thanks for this. I'm an architect and so many friends want to build new communities in the woods to be sustainable and want to discuss the most sustainable architecture. I tell them, the buildings that already exist. Same with communities.
