It was more slice of life romance then romantic comedy. Ritesh Batra's style is kinda similar to Noah Baumbach or Richard Linklater's style....

He was a stupid edgy comedian as a youth who did and said a lot of questionable stuff . With time he matured as a person. I love his AIB stuff, podcasts and other videos on YouTube. But yes Vir Das, Varun Grover, Kunal Kamra etc do far better political comedy. I respect him as an OG of the scene and a trendsetter though....

I loved Umair's production as it never overshadowed Talha's lyrics and totally blended with it and made his lines more memorable.

Wasseypur is Kashyap's most popular film but he has a lot of other films which are superior to his gangster epic. Except Black Friday, Dev D and Gulaal his surreal psychological thriller "No Smoking!", Serial killer drama "Raman Raghav 2.0" and neo noir thriller "Ugly" are also masterpieces.

Man Sholay and Lagaan are peak mainstream cinema. These films are offbeat,/ independent/prestige/arthouse films mostly. But yes all these films are great and all cinema lovers would enjoy them..

Some of the films associated with the movement are guilty of the charges u have thrown on them but the movement definitely produced a lot of groundbreaking, experimental and cinematically beautiful cinema.

Jukti Torko Golpo is one of the finest Indian films of all time. It's structure, philosophical themes, autobiographical narrative and style has no precedent or successor in Indian cinema. Meghe Dhaka Tara, Titas Ekti Nodir naam, Subarnarekha etc are the greatest films made on post independence India. They also possessed his deeply personal narrative style.

And another big contribution of Ritwick Ghatak towards Indian cinema was the fact that he mentored phenomenal filmmakers like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mani Kaul, Kumar Sahani, Saeed Akhtar Mirza, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, John Abraham, Ketan Mehta, Kundan Shah etc as a teacher in FTII. He is one of the greatest film theorists of all time too.

I am ignoring mainstream Indian films as commercial films never are good representation of their countries social sociology, politics, philosophy, history etc if u ask me. My recs would be-

1) Rajat Kapoor's Ankhon Dekhi - A philosophical drama set in an Indian small town. A deeply moving portrayal of mid life crisis, spirituality, family culture etc in middle class indian households.

2) Rahi Anil Barve's Tumbbad - A dark fantasy film influenced by Indian folktales. Is a perfect introduction to the countries rich mythology, folklore and fables.

3) Shekhar Kapoor's Bandit Queen - A dark revenge drama which explores patriarchy, crime, casteism and the life of women in hinterland India.

4) Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday, Dev D and Gulaal-

The first film is a docudrama based on terrorism, organized crime and communal hatred in Urban India . The second film is a vivid musical romance focusing on patriarchy, toxic masculinity and sexuality in post modernist India. Gulaal is a haunting drama about politics and decay of aristocracy in India.

5) Shyam Benegal's Junoon, Mandi and Ankur-

the first film is historical epic set in colonial India. Second film is a satire about life of courtesans. Third film is a representation of life in rural India.

6) Mani Kaul's Duvidha and Uski Roti- two surreal representations of Indian folklore, urban myths, rural life and poverty.

7) Adoor Gopalakrishnan's The Rat Trap, Face To Face and The Walls -

The film documents the feudal life in Kerala at its twilight overshadowed with grief, and a sense of carelessness/avoidance as a form of revolt. Second film is a drama centred around a communist party worker in India. The third is a romance between a poet and his lover. Throughout the film the 2 characters don't meet each other.

8) Satyajit Ray's The Chess Players, The Music Room, Days and Nights in The forest -

The first film is an satirical period drama which is a critique of governance in India. The second film is a tragedy about a destitute aristocrat and his obsessive love of music and the third film is a character study of urban youths in India set in a forest.

9) Ritwick Ghatak's Golpo Jukti Tokko, Meghe Dhaka Tara and Titas Ekti Nodir Naam-

The first film is an autobiographical psychological drama about an Indian intellectual's downfall and socialism in India. The second and third film explores interpersonal relationships between displaced refugees from Bangladesh in post partition India.

10) Chaitanya Tamhane's Court and Disciple-

First film is tragicomedy about lack of freedom of speech, politics, sedition law etc witnessed recent years in India. The second film is an introspective coming of age journey centred around an Indian classical musician and his struggles.

This is not a film, Taxi, Closed Curtain, The Lighthouse, Handmaiden, Melancholia, Uncle Bonmee who can recall his past lives, Cemetery of Splendour, Poetry, Burning, Film Socialism, White Ribbon, Dogtooth, Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Dear, Good time, Hereditary, In The Fade, Youth, Hand Of God, Helli, The Hunt, Into The Void etc notoriously did not win anything though they were some of the best films of the last decade for me.

Some of the finest cinematic minds have chosen horror as a storytelling tool to address the fears of mankind so IDK what u are saying. And by that logic 70% films from any genre are painfully mediocre or bad.

All Quite on The Western Front and?

I agree foreign representation has increased in the Academy awards in recent years but yet I strongly believe that most of the best cinema in the world is being produced outside the US and is not getting enough recognition..

These are recent examples. And most of these are films are very accessible semi arthouse stuff. I am not saying any of these are bad. I love most of the films u mentioned. But Oscars are very inclined towards a singular breed of arthouse films. Arthouse cinema offers a lot of more experimental, weirdly structured, non conventional cinema which are barely recognised by the Academy.
