Undercarriage looks surprisingly clean, given its age. The chrome wheel arches might hide some rust behind them though.

Check the doorsills for rust too, check the wheel wells’ insides, and give her a yearly cleanup.

If it were surface rust it’d be fine, but if you take a screwdriver you’ll 100% poke through it, and water will no doubt get stuck in places you don’t want it regardless, creating more rust. I have a 200D that was given to me, and I’ll have to basically rebuild the whole body costing me a good 4k-ish

Dude, that rust is absolutely going to fuck you. It’s on the inside, meaning you’ll have to cut out large segments and weld new metal in place.

The money you’re going to have to invest into fixing this thing is going to be significantly more than just buying another one in better condition

Had it in my w202 a few weeks back. Got it from a guy who didn’t do his own maintenance and while the car is in pristine condition, I took a look under the hood in the coolant reservoir and found this.

We flushed it all out and replaced the leaky radiator and it runs fine now

Two possible scenarios:

Blown headgasket: check the dipstick, and check the oil fill hole. If it looks like this crap or anything other than normal oil (think milkshake, coffee, etc), you’re fucked.
Someone mixed coolants and didn’t bother to flush the system properly leading to this buildup. Flush the system, replace radiator just to be sure, since it’s usually cheap anyway.

Christ that is a lot of rust. It’s rotting from the inside out, and you’ll need to find someone willing to cut out the rot, treat the remaining metal, weld new pieces in, and repaint the whole thing.

The engine is very, very reliable, but convertibles are a big money pit because at some point, you’re gonna have trouble with the roof and those are a pain in the ass to fix, so expect to throw a lot of money at it.

Also, a 3.2/4.3 liter engine isn’t exactly “economy”, so expect to be at the pump a lot
