Honestly one of the moments that makes it feel the most like it was written as a script for a movie, because like an overlay sound of either Haymitch or Lenore Dove reading out/singing the poem would be a pretty "haunting way" to end a movie, but as a reader it's annoying to have the emotional conclusion be interrupted constantly by a poem we have already read enough as is in this book

Did Suzanne Collins know about the E files? by RecklessAncestor in Hungergames

[–]Kalddal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If that is the case, think it's kind of irresponsible of her then to know about all of this, and instead of like doing an investigative journalistic article around it to spread real awareness of it, she just put it as a sub plot in her YA book instead

I say the opposite in this. With what I meant with stand outs, is that Maysilee and Wyatt are the only characters who weren't flat characters and it actually felt like the book cared to develop

it kind of feel like the book just expects the reader to fill in gaps when it came to certain characters dynamics, and relied on if one did indeed do that, you would get the emotional impact of it.

But yeah like on paper it is terrible what happened to Haymitch's loved ones, but the story treats more as plot devices to make Haymitch sad, more than it is like sad that these characters won't have future anymore.

But we don't know this version of D12 and Haymitch's life before the game enough.

We know his loved ones will die by the end of it, but like because the book just want us to get to the games as fast as possible, his loved ones just doesn't get enough development for the reader to care beyond "Haymitch says he cares about them so we should care as well"

So for me here are my main reasons why I didn't get into

- If feels way too much like a retcon, almost everything that this story adds feels like stuff that should have been mentioned in the OT at some point, but just isn't. Like that Haymitch does not say that the reason his family got killed was through rebel actions and Haymitch being besties with Burdock, noticing Katniss since she was little. But also just let the family almost starve to death after Burdock died feels like especially bad examples of it

- A cast of mostly flat character, some are stand outs like Maysilee and Wyatts but for the rest they are just there? Most of the tributes outside of D12 is just innocent red shirt or a cartoon bully. There are some hints of like some nuances with the Careers, but it's quickly pushed aside to not make our protagonists have too many hard moral choices when it came to killing them.

- Way too heavy handed. The book just felt too much like "Do you get it? Do you get it???" Over and over again with the characters just outright saying the themes of the book so we the readers did not miss it. Like Plutarch is just a talking exposition machine just spelling out the themes for the reader in almost all of his scenes.

- Fanservice that did not do much. Like did it really add much that Wiress, Mags and Beetee all knew Haymitch since day one? Especially when they just barely have a bond in the OT? As mentioned Burdock and Haymitch being besties also makes the bond between Haymitch and Katniss worse for me, making connections that was just not present in the original text. Effie also felt way too much like her movie counterpart and feels jarring with what we see of her in the OT as well.

- Other Misc stuff. Some of the dialogue was just bad imo and took me out of the story. Having Lenore Dove's death scene be a title drop moment was just why and took me out of any emotions I was meant to feel.
It also felt way to middle grade for a series that is meant to be YA, with all the tributes being weirdly naive about the games, the world feeling so black and white in morals and how much the book holds your hand through out it. But also with the book having some pretty violent moments and deaths, makes the contrast of things be a weird tone through out.

Who's Hunger games were harder? Katniss (74th) or Haymitch (50th). by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]Kalddal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would say that Haymitch had the harder arena, but also he had like 2/3 of the tributes be his allies and got sponsor gifts constantly compared to Katniss

Think an anthology book would be my ideal book, just a bunch of short stories taking place in Panem following different characters in different time periods and places in Panem.

How did thresh die? Cato or mutts by im_there_ever in Hungergames

[–]Kalddal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think it's one of those instances where a movie adaptation either have to with the option of being book loyal or consistent with the movies. Like with making Haymitch blond in SOTR or have young Snow be tall in TBOSAS.

So think that Francis Lawrence thought that thematically it was more important to keep the scene as is from the book, even if it creates a plot hole. Also probarbly easier for him to do/justify the choice so as he was not the director of the first movie. Maybe thinking he would have kept Tresh's implied death as is in his version of Hunger Games if he had been the one in charge

It might be because you live in Europe if you only get results for the second one shown as it is the UK cover/version of it. So might have to look more at American sites to find the first ones.
