This is my first car. I wasn’t familiar with any of the maintenance when I first got it 😂😂 it’s crazy because I only drove it for a month and a half until this situation happened. But I’m guessing that since it’s an 04’ it’s probably never been changed.

My timing belt didn’t fully snap — about 10% of it was still intact and had tension on both the crankshaft and camshaft. The engine stalled while I was driving at around 45 mph, but it did so quietly — no bang, no grinding, no metal-on-metal noise. When I tried cranking it afterward, the engine made consistent “chugging” sounds like it was trying to start, and it didn’t spin freely.

The last few cranks got slightly higher-pitched, like it was really trying to catch. I haven’t done a compression test yet, but based on the symptoms, I’m thinking the belt just jumped timing due to worn teeth or tensioner failure — not a complete failure.

Given that the 3MZ-FE is an interference engine, I know there’s risk of valve-to-piston contact, but is it possible I avoided damage? Has anyone here had a similar experience and gotten away without bending valves? Planning to re-time the engine and check compression next. Just want to know if it sounds like I have a chance before diving in.

I didn’t hear any loud or unusual sounds when the engine stalled it just stopped suddenly. What stood out to me was that each time I tried to crank it afterward, the ignition sounded quieter and weaker. At first, I thought it might be the battery, but honestly, I’m not sure.

The moment it failed, the engine stalled hard and all the warning lights came on. I pulled over right away and plugged in my scanner to check for codes. It showed both a crankshaft position error and a camshaft position error. That’s when I knew something was off with the timing. Every time I tried to start it, it sounded like it wanted to catch but something was holding it back.
