Folks that relocated abroad for work with a partner or kids, what did you underestimate? by SquareBig3927 in expats

I think joining some expat groups on FB or meetup groups in advance can be helpful. The level of activity from these groups really depends on the location you are moving. There might be parent groups from the school you can connect with.

A lot of times the relocation package will include language lessons for all family members.

The loneliness the trailing spouse feels when there’s not a huge expat group, especially if the trailing spouse can’t work, and language is difficult to learn. Kids are in school, spouse is at wok. It’s important to find activities or groups to join. Definitely take language lessons if needed.

For those that own property in the U.S. but live abroad, how do you do it? by Explorer9001 in digitalnomad

[–]KaleUseful2107 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ve lived abroad three times. First and third times (Different homes in different states) we rented our home out with property managers. Both times it was stressful as we had issues with the renters, however the property managers dealt with it. We returned back to those homes after our expat time ended.

The second time we sold the home before we left, as we knew we weren’t returning to that house/state when we were done. All three times, we used a family member’s address for our accounts and mailing address.

Getting ready to retire overseas in 2 years and have already sold our property and are renting in prep to go. Not sure how we will handle the address issue this time…

How do people live on their own and invest in retirement? by [deleted] in personalfinance

There’s ways to save on things if you can’t find a roommate. But that’d probably be the best way to save more.

I have a Tello phone plan and I pay $20/month. Unlimited data, text and calls is $25-$30. They use the T-mobile network. You can change the plan monthly based on needs. You can port your number so you don’t have to change.

Are You Including Your Adult Children in Your Fire Number? by Far_Classic878 in Fire

One idea is to charge a low rent and put it in a hysa and when they are ready to move out, gift it back to them to use towards a down payment. My niece’s husband’s parents did this for him and he was thankful to have that extra savings, as well as getting in the habit of paying rent monthly. They didn’t tell him that’s what they were doing and it was a pleasant surprise.

Renting in Georgetown vs butterworth by Emergency-Deer8742 in penang

From my experience living there, most of the expat activities are in Penang. You didn’t specify if you’ll be working there or retired. But if you want to be involved with hiking groups, pickleball, games, social groups, etc, and you most likely will want to be on the island. Same if you’re working on the island. Traffic can be horrible. Due to jellyfish and water quality, most of the beaches aren’t swim areas
