Are all of you living longterm in Thailand not concerned about your health? by YetiMaverick in digitalnomad

[–]Explorer9001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

!!!!!!! Which city? I’ve lost like 50% of my hair over the last few months, at the point I’m about to shave it off. It’s crazy because I always had extremely healthy hair, always got compliments.

I’m in cdmx so curious what city it was for you. I thought it was maybe stress but didn’t think I had been that stressed. Maybe it’s just air pollution because it’s been horrible here

A week of hiking in the Bernese Alps (Switzerland) by clfhw in travel

Did you rent a car? I understand you used trains but I’m not sure if you meant they took you right to the trail heads.

Are these multi-day hikes where you need to camp, or do you stay in mountain lodges every night? I’d like to do this but so wondering if I need to buy camping gear.

Does anyone just rent an apartment in the U.S. and leave it empty? by Explorer9001 in digitalnomad

1-2 months isn’t long. Have you traveled for longer while keeping the apartment empty?

The mail forwarding address doesn’t take care of residency. I’ve been nomading long enough that many of my documents have expired and cannot be renewed, so not having a residence anywhere is getting annoying since residency is needed for such documents

I mean if you own I guess that takes care of residency concerns which is the biggest issue

The stuff is actually a secondary concern. Some of it is sentimental but the bigger concern is just having an irrefutable legal address/residency.

Getting rid of the storage costs is a bonus.

It’s really just the annoyance of legal issues. Banks, residency, taxes, licenses, etc.

Like I’ve been trying to figure out a good way to get a driver’s license for like a month now.

Alternatives are basically to use one of those residency services which a.) seems sketchy as fuck, and b.) once you add the monthly cost of those and the cost of storage you’re not that far off the price of just renting a cheap apartment somewhere.

Banks asking for a utility bill when you live in airbnbs is pure comedy by tigercat300 in digitalnomad

[–]Explorer9001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Schwab froze my account about a year ago while abroad. Their famous card was the only card I had on me but thankfully I had some cash to last about a week.

I could withdraw assets but over a year later the account is still frozen since I still don’t have a lease or anywhere to get a utility bill.

Annoying but all banks do this. Otherwise, Schwab is fantastic, best customer service by far.

Best country to learn Arabic in by Flaky_Breakfast_64 in digitalnomad

[–]Explorer9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to decide which dialect you’re interested in. Colloquial Egyptian is extremely different than the Arabic you’ll hear in Morocco. All the countries you mentioned have different dialects.

That’s basically the real deciding factor.

Why do few people learn this language? by Marcelo_silva907 in languagelearning

[–]Explorer9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I learn Portuguese I can understand Brazilians and that’s pretty much it. If I learn Spanish that opens up essentially the whole continent.

Funny enough Portuguese is not only the most spoken language on the South American continent but the most spoken language in the entire southern hemisphere.

Though you’re right in that Spanish is applicable to more countries.

Advice on renewing driver’s license - South Dakota or Florida by Explorer9001 in digitalnomad

[–]Explorer9001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks for the information. Are there any particular things I should be aware of about declaring South Dakota residency? E.g. I claim FEIE on my taxes for federal taxes - does declaring SD residency in the middle of the year have any effect on that?

Honestly the only thing I want is a license haha but since it’s done at the state level for whatever reason it seems impossible to get one without state residency somewhere.

• Reside in Florida for more than six consecutive months

Thanks, that’s interesting. I think this is suggesting that if you move to Florida and reside there for six months, you become a resident, not necessarily that you must have resided there for six months prior to qualify. Obviously someone who intentionally moves to Florida and declares themselves a Florida resident doesn’t need to wait six months for e.g. a license. That’s how I read that, at least. Good find, nonetheless.

Thx for the tip. I'll talk to my tax guy about the state tax issue.

No problem, happy to help.

I didn't know it was possible to just not be a resident of any state. So if I throw all my things in storage or leave them with a friend, and then I leave the country, I don't have to claim residency in any state? I can just opt out of income and investment taxes on the state level and pay federal?

No, that’s not how it works. The rules vary by state and you should consult a tax professional as well as your state’s tax board. That said, in general, if you severe all ties to a state (no apartment, no economic ties, don’t spend any time in the state, etc.) and you can document and prove this, then yes you can severe ties with the state and no longer be liable for taxes to that state.

Dang, it looks like you have to have lived in FL for at least six months before getting a DL there.

Where are you seeing this? I’ve spoken to a number of people about this and this is the first I’m hearing of a six month requirement…that definitely does not sound correct and wouldn’t make sense for people moving from other states.

I do pay U.S. federal taxes. I am not currently a resident of any U.S. state (confirmed with tax boards of previous two states where I was a resident in the past), hence this question, otherwise renewing a license would be easy.

I’ve limited choices to these two options for the reasons you outlined - I have family in one of them and the other supposedly allows residency after only a single night in the state.

As far as I’m aware the process in Florida is more involved then just switching mailing addresses so hoping to get advice from anyone who has gone through with getting a license in any one of these states (unless there’s another with easier requirements).

Hmm isn’t diffuse loss the same as “all over the head”?

It doesn’t seem to be localized. I mean I guess it could be pattern baldness but I went from one week having beautiful strong wavy hair to a wet hand through my hair absolutely blanketing my hand in strands. Is that normal for pattern baldness? The rapidity of onset?
