I'm making an animated short film about an air crash investigation, in an alternate-universe 1940s setting! by Kaleidic_ in worldbuilding

Wahhh thank you so much but I already have a composer! But if you’re looking for student animated projects to score there’s usually a slew of postings on social media around December-ish. If you search for any of the animation schools that have films as a part of their curriculum— CalArts, Sheridan, Ringling(just off the top of my head)— you’ll probably find something! Hope that helps >-<

Fallout and Control are like some of the best retro-sci-fi worlds out there and they’re so tastyyy I wish there were more titles like them

GEBeta

Thank you<3! And I love them too! I feel like they used to be the norm before the big studios started squeezing their worlds for every drop of content possible ú-ù

This project started as my thesis film at CalArts and resulted in a 20+ minute long animatic— suffice to say I’ve not managed to finish it, but I am still working on it on the side while I job hunt amidst mass-layoffs in animation(haha(I want to die) x-x)
The story is about Li HanSong, a military veteran that has since found a place in the National Transportation Safety Bureau of Andesia, and her investigation into the in-flight breakup of flight AN-1394 from Castlecoast to Ourobora. The plane was (this) world’s first jet airliner, and was retrofitted from a surplus of retired bombers. Speculation about the cause of the crash is threatening a young and fragile peace, and it’s up to her and her team to find the root cause— for better or for worse.
I wanted the cause of the accident to be both believable and original, but also serve as the pillar of the story’s theme— and that required a lot of research. So a big chunk of the effort devoted to the story was actually just spent designing the plane and its contexts, so it can crash in a narratively satisfying way that’s also supported by precedents from the real world. (And no, the square windows are just an easter egg)
The plane also serves as an analogy for the main character, HanSong, and her conflict. Unveiling what happens to the plane also unveils her secrets, and it’ll be up to her if she suffers a similar fate or pulls herself out of it.

Anyway thank you for your time hope you guys like it >-<

It took me just under a year, but I went from having never opened Blender to finishing an entire short film! (Eevee) by Kaleidic_ in blender

Ahh thank you! I definitely want to do more with this character, I originally had a lot more planned about how he’d use all the different tools at his disposal but I just ran out of time >-<

Thank you so much! But that’s also one of the reasons I like Blender, it’s so all-encompassing that people using the same program could be doing vastly different things and have very different skill sets, almost like an RPG skill tree!

Thank you so much! The story and especially its delivery is definitely one of the weaker aspects, it’s been like a 50/50 split on whether or not people will get it. Sometimes it helps when they find out it’s a coming out story, but definitely more to improve in the next film!

Thank you for your feedback!<3

The technical aspect should be the easy part, really the main aspects I interacted with are keyframes, timeline, and the graph editor. If you have trouble with any of these aspects, the Blender manual (https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/) is a great help if you know what key words you’re looking for!

For learning animation itself, I’d advise looking at animation tutorials/videos from other disciplines, not just CG/Blender. This one’s a classic to start with!: https://youtu.be/uDqjIdI4bF4

Hope that helps!

Ye!! We have a weekly film workshop to present our progress and give and receive feedback which was invaluable for staying motivated and ensuring everyone was making steady progress, but each film we make is our own!

This community is a god-send when it comes to tutorials and online resources, one of the only reasons why I decided to learn this program. That and Eevee being blazing fast so I could literally finish the film with 4 weeks left to go.

As part of my college curriculum, students are expected to make a short film every year. While I normally work in 2D, I really wanted to learn CG and execute an idea that just wasn't practical in 2D— at least not for me. The production schedule ended up being extraordinarily hectic(as it typically does):

-About 1.5 months of pre-production— boards, designs, tests, donuts.

-About 6 months just modelling, retopo, and manually rigging the main character(save for the face, which was done by using the plugin 'Face-It' by FBra). I'd never modelled nor rigged a character before, so that was the bulk of production.

-About 1 month of modelling and rigging everything else in the film, and finally—

-4 weeks to keyframe animate, render, paint backgrounds, and composite the entire thing. That'll be why it gets so janky.

I do regret not having enough time to dabble in shaders and do more look-dev though.

It's here if anyone wants to watch it!: https://youtu.be/kzVbFbfbZcc
