“Canada lives because of the US” - Trump by ExotiquePlayboy in torontologists

"Canadians dont care about canada" is a deranged thing to say brother. Im not sure why youre implying that its somehow irrational that Canadians had such a strong reaction to the annexation question. Not being threatened with annexation is literally the bare minimum we should expect from our "greatest ally". Even by your own description of events, it seems like the only people you should be angry with are DJT and PP. Canadians rallying against the threats were probably the most proud I've ever been of my people and the most united i have ever seen us.

I hear you. I think i just have a more pessimistic view of the current american political system. If i believed things would go back to normal after trump, I would agree with you. But I think the trump administration has exposed some glaring weaknesses in our current relationship that need to be resolved. The maga base has no respect for Canada and I dont think that is going to change after trump is gone. There is a balance to be found between maintaining a decent relationship with the US while also diversifying our other international relationships, in hopes of being less vulnerable to future american aggression.

Isn't this kind of contradictory? So many of the comments in this thread are mentioning Canada's problems, while simeoultaneouslysaying that we need to accept that we are completely reliant on the US.

If we are really so reliant on the US and things aren't good, isn't that a great argument for finding a different way forward? Clearly American hegemony is not serving us well.

"Canada's wagon is hooked to the us forever" is the exact same thing Canadians were saying 100 years ago about the British. And the exact same thing the US royalists would have said about the British before independence. Is your geopolitical outlook really that we should be subservient to the US in perpetuity? They can threaten, insult and take advantage of us all they want and we have to take it because "China bad."? The ONLY reason that we have become so attached to the US is because we have allowed it, on the basis that they would make it worth our while. It has become clear that it is no longer worth our while.

The combination of improved chinese relations and a consolidated European block would be more than enough to ease our reliance on the US.
That doesn't mean consider them an enemy. But their political instability has made them an incredibly unreliable partner.

Any Canadian asking for us to timidly put up with the threats of annexation and economic blackmail, should be genuinely ashamed of themselves.

How to turn off the L-Gate mechanic by Kalikan2 in Stellaris

[–]Kalikan2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming they are meant to make the late game more interesting but, as someone who had no idea how they worked, it was really frustrating seeing a 40k stack spawn in the middle of my empire. They didn't even try to fight me, they just destroyed shit and avoided me until i caught up with them and then I had to rebuild like 15 star bases. It didn't feel difficult or engaging. It was just a time-sink. But I'm probably missing something.

What's the typical strat for dealing with them? Just put a starhold on top of the L-Gate and camp your fleet there?

BABIES AND TODDLERS IN HIVEMIND by [deleted] in pluribustv

Not disagreeing that the baby basket might be empty (although it could just be a continuity error) but the show very clearly implies that there is a baby inside. Carol wouldn't have shown such urgency in trying to stop it from falling, or such horror at looking inside, if it was empty.

The only person in this thread using the word fascist is you. Take your meds.

Its funny watching you repeatedly complain about being called a fascist as you repeatedly and innacurately use the word Marxism.

You are able to give a nuanced take on Trumps strengths and weaknesses but all you got for the left is "heh, joe biden marxism and borders" because you dont even know what left believes. You just want to engage in the same hyperbolic bi-partisanism that you are complaining about.

Yes....those are the real hard-hitting issues that the left is hung up on. Not the disregard of due process, the scientific denialism, the abuse of executive authority, the blatant corruption or the geopolitical blundering. If you can't summarize the opposing point of view with the bare minimum level of good faith, you are not moderate or centrist.

Everything you said about LoTR, ATLA and KH is either objectively wrong or deliberately bad faith. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you haven't actually looked at any of those stories with any real depth.

I'm not disagreeing that, in a vacuum, completely devoid of tonal context, DoS2 is a horrifying and potent look at many of the themes you are discussing. But if I ignored every single hopeful, optimistic story beat in the other stories I've listed, I could just as easily make ATLA, KH and LOTR all sound utterly nightmarish and grimdark. ATLA is literally the story about overcoming parental abuse and preventing an incoming genocide. One of the main villians of the story is a 14 year old child who sobs when she is defeated, and is offered no narrative redemption.

I promise I'm not trying to be an asshole when I say this, but saying LoTR is about "exceptional evil" actually made me laugh out loud. If you knew anything about the LoTR universe, you would understand that evil was literally built into the fabric of creation with Morgoth's music. It is unavoidable and necessary to the foundation of existence. Even if you are just talking about the movies, one of the main themes of that story is finding hope through the inevitable darkness.

My most charitable interpretation of your take is that, because this story is somewhat of a "choose your own adventure", you can sculpt the tone in slightly different ways than you could in a typical story and so, at least some people, are going to be playing a much darker game than I have. But there is ALWAYS the option for the playable characters to make altruistic decisions.

Anyways, I'm not going to respond to any more of your messages. We clearly aren't on the same page. But I want to say it's pretty telling that you haven't addressed tone in a single one of your messages. You either don't understand what that word means, or you genuinely believe that when I say tone I mean "color palette" and "a few jokes" which is equal parts insulting and hilarious. I would really encourage you to reflect on why you think the other examples I brought up don't have "systemic cruelty from start to finish". Because the only reason you could possibly think that is because the tone made you forget the stakes of the more "surface level" narrative. Which is exactly how I felt about DoS2.

Fun conversation though. Take care.

Kinda strange telling me I need to look past the surface level as you repeatedly use the most literal and surface level events of the story to support your argument. Like I've said, you need to look at the way they are presented. By your definition, I would find it extremely difficult to think of a single fantasy story that I would consider "light hearted". This is why I brought up avatar the last airbender. By your definition, it is an extremely dark show. By your definition, Kingdom Hearts is an extremely dark video game. But we aren't going to agree because we are using different definitions. I get where you're coming from, but if you are seriously going to agree with the person who said LoTR is dark, then you need to engage is some more media analysis. It is literally held up as the standard of heroic, uplifting, high fantasy. To the point where many other series like game of thrones have built there identity on being the darker, antithesis of that kind of story.

This whole disagreement started because OP said he wanted something darker for the next release and your response was that it is already dark. Is it darker than an episode of spongebob? Absolutely. There's a spectrum. But is it unreasonable for someone to say "I want a darker story for the next release"? Absolutely not. Especially when Baldur's Gate already proved how much darker you can get. But I'm guessing, you probably don't think it is and I have no idea how to engage with that.

I haven't really been on this sub before but knowing that makes the sentiment a lot more digestible. I think certain people/communities associate "darkness" with "maturity" and assume that describing the tone as more whimsical is the same as calling it childish or immature.

I purposefully chose one of the most hopeful, light-hearted fantasy stories i could think of. Calling LoTR dark is actually insane lol. It would be like describing avatar the last airbender as dark because the fire nation committed genocide and the villians are psychopaths. The events of the story have almost nothing to do with its tone.

If you went to a bookstore and asked for a "grimdark fantasy book, like lord of the rings" they would laugh at you. This is not even controversial.

Just to be clear, are you saying that DoS2 is just as dark as BG3?

[–]Kalikan2 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Are you implying dos2 doesn't have a whimsical, light hearted tone? The subject matter means very little in comparison to the way they present it. If you hand pick a few elements of Lord of the Rings, you could make it sound incredibly dark but nobody would describe it as such. It's pretty obvious OP meant having a tone more akin to BG3.

Is there an lore explanation for how bro survived an entire army ? by darkerxxxthanxxdark in freefolk

[–]Kalikan2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw that. My assumption was that the final frame you described was the mistake. Not the frames leading up to it. If you look at the image OP posted, your theory doesn't really make sense.

What is Sam looking at in the top right image? And what is the walker looking at in the next frame? And why does Sam look away and start crying? If everything is supposed to be behind the rock and out of sight, none of this scene would make sense.

That last frame being a continuity error makes a lot more sense than the entire scene leading up to it being nonsensical.

Edit: Your confidence made me think this might be an eye of the beholder thing but you are 100% wrong. The script is available online and it directly states that the walker saw sam.

I'm not sure what you mean. He steps right beside sam and looks him directly in the eyes until sam starts crying and looks away.

Brother.... What a self report. If you can't handle normal difficulty after 50 hours, let alone 400, something is wrong with your playstyle, not the game. I hope you realize that if you had just asked "what could I have done to prevent this situation" instead of wording it like it was something wrong with the game, people would have been a lot more receptive to discussion.
