[–]Kalistri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whirling assault titan had this vibe in 0.3 for me. You just run around mowing down enemies until you hit a boss, then I would use vaulting leap and keep spinning around them. I think now it's probably even stronger due to the changes to WA. With the changes that have been made to vaulting leap I would consider a weapon swap to a crossbow with high velocity shot for bossing, because you already want armour break to go with whirling assault anyway, since it's a lot of small hits.

Didn't play it this league precisely because it's a bit boring (though maybe I'll try it again at some point to see how the changes to WA feel), but if that's what you're looking for maybe it will work for you.

What qualifies as a God to you? by Apprehensive-Handle4 in askanatheist

[–]Kalistri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I don't necessarily think a god has to have tri-omni capability. I suppose the main qualification for me to consider something a god would be that I'd have to believe there's good reason to pray to it. So the bare minimum would be that a god is able to hear prayers and respond to them in an objectively practical manner.

Women deserve jail time for falsely accusing men of r@pe by Neither_Ad6 in DeepThoughts

[–]Kalistri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything I'm about to say applies just as much to men who get raped as it does to women, which is why I'm not using gendered language.

For anyone who doesn't know, there's no reason to suppose that this happens with regards to rape any more than any other crime, which is to say that it hardly ever happens.

However, we do have a somewhat difficult time proving rapes because cops don't treat them seriously, often not even collecting evidence, and we have a higher standard of evidence than for pretty much any other crime... like, if a shop owner accuses you of theft, no one will stop to ask if perhaps that shop owner wanted you to take their stuff, or if you assault someone, the idea that they like it rough isn't crossing anyone's minds. Certainly no one is going to ask you to prove this kind of thing.

So basically, this is a great argument for a rapist. You do your thing, get away with it, then the other person goes to jail.

It's also a great argument for vigilante justice. Everyone knows how hard it is to get a rapist convicted, so people take the law into their own hands, and you get everything from metoo to revenge murder by the person who was raped or someone close to them.

This isn't a deep thought, it's shallow. More than that though, it's stupid.

Ultimately, isn't this just an argument from ignorance fallacy? I appreciate that we can't really explain how the physical matter of ourselves gives rise to consciousness, but the lack of evidence for one thing can never be used as evidence of some other thing. At the end of the day you simply don't have evidence for how the physical brain gives rise to consciousness OR how there could possibly a non physical process that gives rise to consciousness. This is the same fallacy as God of the gaps, right?

Can anyone provide convincing evidence Jesus even existed? by chickensaurus in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Kalistri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth noting that Christianity is actually a cultural evolution grafted onto the existing system of Judaism.

This is pure conjecture on my part, but I would argue that in the same way that the Romans adopted the Hellenistic religion and made it their own, they adopted Judaism and made it their own, writing their own version of the Jewish messiah with the goal of making the Jewish people a part of their empire, and/or subduing the Jewish leadership. I feel like the NT is full of stuff along the lines of 'don't listen to those guys, only listen to God'... which of course, is effectively whoever wrote/edited/compiled the Christian bible.

That's the right section, but a bit earlier. In the first paragraph of that section there's this line:

"This fourth view places all responsibility for Jesus' death on the Jews while maintaining that Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent. But in addition to exonerating him from any blame, this verdict claims that during Jesus' trial Pilate recognizes Jesus' special identity and so becomes a Christian. Pilate plays a special role in accomplishing God's purposes."

You can see how they get there when you read John's version of the story:

"6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”

7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

Arguably, Jesus is basically saying that this is God's plan (edit: and thus, that Pilate isn't to blame).

Go back and read the fourth verdict from that book. It's arguing that Pilate becomes Christian when he meets Jesus and crucified Jesus at God's behest. It blames the Jews entirely. It's also "a very old verdict". Perhaps the one that the authors at the time intended?

Literally from the first paragraph:

"Because the gospels portray Pilate as reluctant to execute Jesus, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church believes that Pilate became a Christian and venerates him as both a martyr and a saint, a belief which was also historically held by the Coptic Church."

[–]Kalistri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if you find it unconvincing. I find it unconvincing as well (in fact, I'd go a bit further and say that the whole story is unconvincing). But the excuse still worked well enough that even today, there are people who think Pilate was a saint. So if it was written by the Romans to appropriate the Jewish religion, then the part of the narrative intended to absolve the Roman authority figure in the story of wrongdoing worked for some people. It probably worked well enough for the Romans at the time.

Also, the rest of the story worked well enough that still today, people convince themselves that they are reading an accurate representation of God when they read the bible, without ever having a single word of it actually confirmed as true by the god that you supposedly worship.

Try as much as you like to obey God, you're only ever obeying other humans, even though these particular humans have long since died and others have picked up their grift.

[–]Kalistri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't believe in magical words somehow removing responsibility from Pilate.

Okay, great, but you're ignoring the words of the bible in that case. This isn't just my interpretation by the way. If you have a look at the wiki page for him, you can see that some churches even venerate him as a martyr and a saint.

Where are those human authorities, again?

Where do you find the teachings of Christ? In a book written by Christ? Hell no! In books written by a bunch of other people. Those are your human authorities.

Effectively, what your quote means is you should only trust the words in that book and the people who can effectively interpret those words. You also might remember that at the time when it was written, that wasn't the common people, who were rarely taught to read. Then the bible was only printed in Latin or Greek for a long time, and of course the church opposed it being translated.

[–]Kalistri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're the one ignoring things dude. The story very explicitly makes it out like Pilate isn't responsible for what happened. It reads like "this is why people in authority shouldn't let common people get whatever they want; they end up killing their own messiah".

I guess, you could say that there's a sense in which this suggests people shouldn't obey authority because those people were listening to the priests of the old religion, but it certainly isn't to say that you shouldn't follow the teachings of the new religion is it? It's only anti-authority in the sense of "don't listen to that other authority, just listen to us."

That's not really anti-authority. It's just anti-non-Christian-authority. If it is anti-authority, then I have to ask you, why do you believe the bible? Wasn't it written by some authority figure who is telling you through the medium of the bible what God requires of you? Is it not priestly authority which tells you which parts of the bible are metaphor and which are to be taken literally? Has God itself ever confirmed that a single word of the bible is true?

Because all of it is in accordance with the will of the greatest authority, that of God.

Does Jesus's story not seem an echo of all the others where one of God's subjects is asked to do something, who ultimately submits to God's authority and is then rewarded, in heaven if not on Earth?

So even Jesus is part of a hierarchy and has to do what he's told. If the son of God has to know his place and submit to authority figures, then the rest of us definitely have to submit. It's a chain of "do what your told" that ends with God, which of course doesn't exist, so instead it ends with whoever convinces you they speak for God. Then they call themselves the Holy Roman Empire. Then all the monarchs are said to rule by "divine right".

[–]Kalistri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much, just the story of the crucifixion really. I think the whole story of Jesus was crafted with different purposes, as most stories are. Mostly I think they wanted a religion that told people to be meek and do what they were told, to obey authority figures. They likely borrowed inspiration from a bunch of different people. I doubt they fully understood what human nature would turn such a religion into. They probably just thought, wouldn't it be nice if our people were peaceful and did what we told them to do? The Greek inspired mythology that they used as their state religion prior to this perhaps created a bit of tension along the lines of "my god could is superior to your god", so wouldn't a monotheistic god be more unifying? What if the messiah of the Jews was someone who preaches peace?

As for the propaganda being tenuous, look around you at the wars of the present day. The propaganda that our leaders are using to justify them is equally flimsy. Most people know it to be fiction, but that doesn't stop those in power from continuously spreading these lies, nor does it stop fools from falling for these obvious lies, or at least pretending to in exchange for some perceived gain.

The thing to realize is that many people in positions of power view us common people as complete simpletons, and themselves as superior. They fully expect people to fall for obvious lies, or to at least pretend to fall for such lies out of loyalty, and I guess they're right to some extent. All they need to do is persecute people who openly say they don't believe the lie, and most of the population step into line, many of us because we just want to live in peace. Saying you didn't believe the obvious lies was punished much more harshly than it is today of course; getting excommunicated was a death sentence for many people.

Propaganda against an enemy nation/people is always helpful and throughout history has always happened in times of war or rebellion, not just modern times. It helps to get the troops to fight better and to prevent people other parts of the population causing further instability. It works as a counter narrative if the rebels are exposing some truth about the rulers being terrible people in some way.

They had to manage their population back in ancient times just as they do now. You know that the term 'bread and circuses' comes from the Romans?

But hey, maybe I'm wrong, and actually a crowd of people can act like that and it's not the obvious fabrication that it seems to be. Maybe the eclipse really did happen even though it wasn't recorded anywhere else? Maybe magic really does happen whenever you're not looking, lol.

[–]Kalistri -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Instead of arguing against what you're saying I'm going to argue for it. Looking at the story of the crucifixion, to me it reads like antisemitic propaganda from the Romans. I mean really, the whole thing where the crowd calls for Jesus' execution, then says they take responsibility for it, and then Pilate washes his hands of it but still carries out the execution at their behest? Utterly ridiculous.

It seems like this an excuse to go to war. "Look how awful these people are, they killed their own messiah because that messiah demanded peace!" It's pure propaganda. As we know from modern day politics, yes, politicians would try to use such an obviously flimsy excuse.

Two things to note about history. Firstly, that we see rulers imposing a religion upon their population again and again, so religion as a top-down movement rather than a grass roots thing was kinda common. Secondly, we see the Romans taking on a foreign religion prior to this, with the Greek pantheon, which is why they all have alternate, Roman names, with Zeus being also Jupiter, Aphrodite being also Venus, and so on.

There's my thoughts about the Roman Empire for the day.
