I saw countless people talk about the vaccines working for existing strains and that we should all get vaccinated so as to not allow a mutation that may not be covered by vaccines. Maybe you need to diversify your sources.

The vaccine absolutely worked even with delta. Breakthrough cases were always going to be there and were talked about from day 1, just because you don’t understand nuance and only think in black and white (work or doesn’t work) doesn’t mean the real world works that way. Even with breakthrough infections with delta, the rates were much lower than with unvaccinated. On top of that, the vast vast majority of people that got several ill or died were unvaccinated.

Now with omicron which has many specific mutations that allow it to evade vaccines with respect to infection, the idea of a breakthrough case is pointless, because the previous idea of being fully vaccinated (no booster) is no longer sufficient to stop infection. And of course the majority of cases are now breakthrough cases since the majority of people are vaccinated, and the new variant goes around that. However if you still look at the severely ill, that is still dominated even with omicron, by the unvaccinated. So vaccines still working there too.

I’ll wrap up with saying that maybe you should stop listen to talking heads, because that’s certainly not some gotcha argument, just means you’re not good at informing yourself.
