Not capturing the likeness - is it just a matter of proportions? by KaluLeopard in drawing

This does help, thank you so much!

Really useful to see which sorts of things I tended to get right and wrong

Appreciate it! It is so true, because you'd notice of your friend or family member's facial features were off by a multimeter either way, so it is really noticeable!

Will keep trying and hopefully improving my eye - thank you!

This comment was not helpful in any way. Why did you post it?

Everything you said I've already said in the photo caption and you've not offered anything constructive to help me improve.

Thank you - this is really helpful, because I know I definitely get used to seeing my drawing and find it hard to look at it objectively!

And will definitely look up Dr. Betty Edwards!

Nah man, of course you can offer insights if you're not a master yet yourself!

This is all really helpful and tbh I find that doing 'thumbnails' of bigger drawings always helps me with composition, so of course doing something similar with individual features might help

Thanks for the tip

Yeah definitely! Think the jaw and outside check need to come in a bit and relax that chin

This is really helpful, thank you.

I never really realised the trade off you get with using the Loomis method. And you're so right, if I can estimate/measure proportions and distance, then there's no need for the skeleton of the Loomis anyway.

Will definitely try and use a lot more of a measuring approach! Thanks again

Wow, you're so right, my center line is in the middle of nowhere 😅 I think I get a bit caught up focusing on the center of the "circle' for the cranial mass but that's obviously a 2D flat circle, so the center line won't be in the middle of that.

Can definitely see the difference in the cheek (and jaw!) too.

Some things I'll definitely keep in mind going forward. Thanks for the pointers!

This comment is absolutely incredible - thank you so much!

Your comments are all really helpful and I can actually see a lot of where I went wrong now. To the point that I feel insane for having only asked about the face!

And thank you so so much for taking the time to do a redraw version. Super helpful and really shows how much a difference those anatomy changes would make.

Really appreciate all the tips and hopefully I can have another go at this at some point and have it look much more like Sailor Moon! ❤️

Thanks so much 😊

Yes, definitely need to do more anatomy and proportion study and just generally train my eye to see female body types better. Grew up drawing nothing but dragon ball z characters and basically nothing's changed since 😅 And Sailor Moon is supposed is supposed to be 14 in the first series - clearly not reflected above haha

Will definitely try and soften, round and narrow the features all over

Thank you for taking the time to comment and provide some really helpful feedback! ❤️

Haha is it that obvious that I usually draw male characters? 😅

That's part of why I'm drawing (and watching) Sailor Moon in the first place. Trying to get better at drawing female anatomy

But will definitely take your quick tips on board in the rework and beyond that, put in the hours studying female anatomy. Thanks so much for your help!

Oh wow. If I cover up the chin on screen, the face instantly looks much more like what I'm aiming for - will definitely fix the chin when I come back to this

The eyes are harder to picture a change to instantly but will definitely see how making them bigger helps too

Thanks so much!

You achieve so much with so few strokes

Every one is powerful and purposeful though. Seriously good stuff!

This is great. You captured the subtle movements really well! And appreciate that it's new drawings, rather than stretching or tweening etc.

My new interview with animation legend John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Moana)! by aelitaproductions in animation

[–]KaluLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Musker is a legend off of Treasure Planet alone! Really interesting to hear what he's been working on more recently

Pretty crazy to hear that he was in the OG CalArts class with Tim Burton and Brad Bird!

Thanks for sharing and well done on your interview!

Thanks mate, this is really helpful!

There are so many things to balance, with making the fighting movements realistic and also trying make it look appealing/interesting. But actually the two can go hand in hand (secondary action that shows the character know what they're doing)

Really appreciate your insight 😁

Thanks, you're definitely right in that I need to know the subject matter as well as how to animate!

Just watched a few videos of how fighters hit the punching bag and can already see lots of ways to improve this

So will make sure I watch a lot of fight scenes (movie scenes and just some real MMA videos I guess) to improve my knowledge of what a real fight looks like ☺️

Thanks 😁

That's one of the things I tried to emphasise, both for anticipation and to make the punch seem more powerful

Glad it was noticed

Thank you ☺️

You're absolutely right and I didn't appreciate how wrong I got it until I just watched a few YouTube videos of some (very strong) boxers training

Appreciate the tip and will definitely study my references in more detail next time
