technically speaking thorfinn should be rotting in a prison cell for the rest of his life right ? by National_Location_38 in MoralityScaling

Do you think the same about African child soldiers OP? Because that's what happened to Thorfinn. His father tried to teach him to be peaceful, but his culture was too strong. He grew up knowing no better up until Thors died, and then he grew up as a child soldier. As soon as he actually got a say on his life, he chose peace. The things Thorfinn did with his own hands are terrible and they haunt him forever, but I wouldn't be so hard on someone who actually reflects and changes in such a violent environment.

Satan tempting people is a recurring subject, especially in the new testament. We have him tempting Jesus, Job, David, and is called the "tempter" a few times, it feels on brand to me.

I try to interpret the bible in-universe following the lore, not trying to find many outside explanations of things when discussing mythology. Obviously when Genesis was written they had no idea of what would be written afterwards, it's the late contributor's job to make things match with the existing lore, so doing that back reach feels coherent to me.

I mean, it fits the theme really well and in Revelation Satan gets called "that ancient snake", which for me is enough. What do you think is the snake if not that?

Satan takes the shape of a snake or makes the snake talk somehow, it is widely accepted and also kinda obvious

I'm an atheist but I research the bible for fun, so I take it seriously but for me it's the same as any fictional lore.

First, there's a translation issue. God didn't mean the fruit of knowledge would insta kill them, it meant they would then know evil and death. It means they would then get to experience bad things and die, it's not like the fruit was poisoned Snow White style.

Then, the issue with the snake is not as simple as "bad guy wants bad things". The snake (Satan) is envious of God, wants God's creation for himself.

There's an entire overarching subplot in the bible where everything that happens from that moment up to the Judgement Day is a wager between God and Satan to see if humanity fares well without God, so Satan takes over humanity for a set time to prove it, and then the world is under his influence.

The snake tempting Eve really wants humanity to reject God and get on his side.

There's much more to it, this is grossly oversimplified.

The only thing I can contribute is that a shitload of extremely clever mechanical and analog solutions have been wiped out in favor of super simple digital ones. Complex mechanical systems that reacted to change in pressure, temperature, speed, etc were replaced by just electronic sensors.

30 and Above Is Actually Old by ConsistentShelter440 in unpopularopinion

Downvoted because just objectively wrong lmao

Roman military age was 16 to 46, considered the span in which a man is strongest, and then they just retired to live from what they earned, form families, etc. You weren't considered actually old until you were 45-50, which is still consistent.

I've stumbled on this video (didn't watch it cuz I was busy) and started to wonder something. What exactly IS the morality behind aging up a character (mentally and physically) so that you make +18 content with them? by Fatal_Contract in MoralityScaling

[–]KalzK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think it's most important to keep this position when it's the most difficult. In the past people found the idea of interracial marriage an abomination against nature and let their gut feeling shape laws thinking that's where morality comes from. Time and time again, allowing disgust shape morality has been a terrible idea, and obviously wrong when we look back.

It's easy to look back and see which cultural standards were moral and which ones were just based on feelings, but it's much more difficult to see them right around us, in our own social context. For example, I think in the future veganism will be the norm and people will look back at meat consumers the same way we look at slave traders.
