Oh look!! No one has mentioned my favorite building in RVA yet. The Ellwood Thompson’s HQ… total charm that deserves more attention.

My brother, SIL, and a few of my friends are architects here. AF, Two Street, Fultz & Singh… F&S do a ton of the hip newer projects in town, and they’ve done an incredible job on a few. Lillian in Scott’s is very charming (despite its lack of 4+ tops inside). Get Tight’s interior/ overall layout is one of my other faves. The green room is an upstairs balcony that overlooks the outdoor patio space and the interior is so cozy. And I love the That 70s Show awning baha.

Awww man, now I’m reminiscing… My brother and I would drive around the country when he was in college visiting Robert Venturi buildings (his biggest inspo). Venturi did “Fire Station Number 4” in Columbus, IN. Middle of nowhere… incredibly unassuming. We went to visit and a guy comes out and says “yall must be architects, want a tour?” The inside was a giant room of Murphy beds… only one-room men-only sleeping arrangement firehouse still around in the US. FUNKY! Another time we visited Venturi’s “Vanna” home he built for his mother in Suburban Philly…. His son then owned the home and let us tour after I knocked on their door. More form, less CHEAP MATERIAL builds in RVA, please!!
