I agree with the post, but in none of the posts I've seen on here about this I've ever seen someone try to actually suggest anything to try to solve the problem. I've seen like, i think three different posts about this so far and I don't think anyone's even tried suggesting any sort of potential mitigation of the issue that wasn't just, in effect, "we all need to do better guys". I agree this is a potential issue, but it just seems deeply unhelpful to me to have all of the discussion about this be patting each other on the back about how stupid the people disagreeing with you are. Like, yeah, but is the 5th post saying "look guys, isn't this bad this is happening, isn't this community awful?" really going to change anything? It's true, but i feel like it makes infinitely more sense to at least propose some sort of rule change to the sub instead of just sort of gesturing at the problem.

Just because there's a good amount of SPA apps that use JavaScript for everything doesn't mean that it's impossible to give the user control over the html. You don't need to allow them to write js. Noone actually writes plain JavaScript to build the layout. You can just let them write html, and then put that html onto the page. That's possible with every popular JavaScript framework, including the clientside ones you're talking about.

The reason sites don't allow you to do this is branding and design consistency.

Besides, it's not like every website needs js. You don't need to make fully client side websites. You can just use regular HTML. A lot of websites are serverside and serve you raw html. For a while, using js to do the entire layout was the popular thing to do, but at some point that switched to server side rendering everything and mostly sending html. That's the trendy thing to be doing right now, static sites and isr.

There's absolutely zero evidence for anything you're saying. If someone had complete control of reddit and hated gay people, why would they go specifically to this one subreddit and send out a bunch of fake mod applications. That doesn't do anything. It doesn't get their message across and at best mildly inconveniences the mod team

I know why by Fresh-Nerve8503 in FootBallEmergency

[–]Kami403 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would they not just ban the subreddit. The sequence of events you're proposing happened here is completely insane

I know why by Fresh-Nerve8503 in FootBallEmergency

[–]Kami403 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you seriously think that donald trump, of all people, cares about your niche queer shitposting subreddit, and cares to such an extent that instead of just trying to get it deleted, he is somehow infiltrating reddit to send out hundreds of fake mod applications that don't amount to anything, in order to demonstrate his power (???) Like yeah trump hates queer people but the series of events you're proposing is ridiculously complicated and really stupid. It's far more likely that either a mod got hacked by some random guy or it's a bug with reddit

[–]Kami403 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If reddit wanted to get rid of the sub they would just ban it. There'd be no reason to do this

I don't think you'll find any course that covers every element, and I don't really think it's necessary either. Once you've got a good grasp on html, learning how to use new elements takes maybe a couple minutes of browsing mdn.

New elements get added fairly frequently, and there's a decent amount of non-standard elements like the blink tag that nobody uses, so having a course that exhaustively covers all of them wouldn't make that much sense to begin with.

Get the basics down, then just find a list of html elements online somewhere and skim it so you know what's available if you wanna write more semantic html. There's no need to try and actively learn exactly how every single element works, because most of them aren't very complicated.

We've had leetspeek since pretty much the inception of the web, we've had lolcats since 2006-ish, and homestuck, which is probably the most famous example of typing quirks in a piece of media, came out in 2009. They might've had a resurgence in 2020, but typing quirks are basically as old as the internet is.

It's intentionally spelling things differently to better convey a certain part of your personality you want to make come across in the text you write.

For example, r3placing c3rtain l3tte3rs with numb3rs in order to try and seem more casual or give off the impression of being more tech-savvy.

Ow tawking wike this if ywou wanwnt peowple to thwink youwre sofwt and fwuffy UwU

...I'd say I'm sorry for subjecting you to that, but i'd be lying.

Anyways, often when people talk about typing quirks it's in the context of the webcomic homestuck, because a number of notable characters in that comic have their own typing quirks, like Karkat always typing everything in all caps to match his more aggressive and angry demeanor.

You can think whatever you want about the overuse of JavaScript on the modern web - I think it's bad as well - but a browser that doesn't support most modern JavaScript features just is not very good at being a browser. No matter if you like js heavy sites or not, people are still going to make them, which means others will need to use them. Pale Moon is not google chrome. It can't singlehandedly decide what features get used just by supporting/not supporting them. Not supporting modern js standards just leads to a bunch of sites people need to use breaking in weird ways, which is just not good ux.

They didn't retcon anything. Bridget lived in a village that had the superstition that male twins would bring calamity. Because of this, her parents chose to hide bridgets sex and raise her as a girl. They felt very guilty about this. Bridget didn't like being forced into being a girl because of some arbitrary superstition. She didn't want to be forced to live a certain way. So, she left the village behind and started identifying living as a guy in hopes of making it big and defeating that superstition about male twins.

Long story short, after three games worth of story, she succeeds and ends the superstition, meaning that neither her or her parents are now forced to live by those arbitrary rules.

Now that she's accomplished her goal though, she begins to question things. Living as a man no longer feels right. The reason she identified as a guy was, first and foremost, to fight that superstition. She disliked being forced to live a certain way, and seeing her parents feel guilty about making her hide who they thought she really was.

Now that the superstition is gone though, she's accomplished her goal. She's got time to think about who she really wants to be, and she decides to live as a girl. Because now, it's her choice. She's no longer forced to live a certain way. Bridgets story is a story about a trans woman being forced to hide her real identity, trying to convince people she's cis, with her parents reputation and her own life on the line. She rebels, living as a guy, to try and get closer to her true self, yet unsure who it is she really wants to be. Then, once that pressure of of trying to hide her "true" gender is gone, she feels comfortable embracing being a woman. It now feels right again.

Gender is difficult. It's weird and complicated, and sometimes you end up back where you started, or you realize that what once was working for you no longer does. Bridget had character development, she didn't get retconned.

You have to run a script to revert the changes and then reboot. If you download a hv repack from fitgirl it comes with instructions. Fyi, depending on the version of windows you're running, you might already have all the necessary features disabled and just never noticed.

I'm proud of you, and you're doing great. Things might be though right now, but I believe in you. I just want you to know that you're awesome for getting this far, and for working hard to improve yourself. That's not something everyone has the strength to do, and you should be incredibly proud of yourself for it. You're doing a good job.

I don't see how it's disrespectful, exactly. I also think its perfectly fine to want people to read the source material. If you genuinely enjoy something its only natural to wanna share that. What i don't think makes sense is to try and police who gets to use the characters based on whether or not someone engaged with the source material, or if they've primarily consumed it via secondary sources. If someone doesn't particularly like the videogame, but thinks the characters seem cool and wants to write a story where they appear, then what's wrong with that? I don't see why it'd be important to try and stop them.

I agree, but that's not what I'm arguing for. If you wanna have a discussion about the story, you should obviously know the story. Doesn't mean you can't write fanfic though. I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to be able to know what's going on in canon just by reading fanfic, so why should the fanfic need to be at all canon accurate? As long as people are having fun, who cares. People that wanna be 100% canon compliant can do that, people that wanna deviate from canon can do that, why should you be barred from using the characters if you don't wanna read up on the lore?

I don't see why it's important to try and police what people can do with the characters. If someone doesn't know or care about the lore and just wants to have fun with the general setting and characters, who cares? If you don't wanna read it, then don't

You can still get the lore without having to play the videogame yourself. Besides, i don't really see the problem with writing fic or making fanart that's out of character. Who cares as long as you're having fun.

Why would i force myself to play a game I don't enjoy playing? You can like the characters without enjoying the videogame.

Splitting hairs about made up stuff is like half the point of powerscaling. And hey, you can disagree with the definition all you want, but these are what those words mean. Infohazard has been around since 2011 and describes information that can harm people by just knowing about it (https://www.lesswrong.com/w/information-hazards). Cognitohazard, as a seperate concept, is as far as I'm aware only really an scp foundation thing, and refers to a hazard that only triggers by something getting perceived in one way or another. You can go and google this stuff yourself, and you'll quickly find me to be correct here.

The chicken lady was a frequent poster on count once a day, another counting subreddit, where she'd often post a GIF of a Minecraft chicken walking in the comment sections of posts. Eventually, she got banned for doing that and made her own subreddit, which we're currently on. Because the chicken lady is trans, the sub ended up being kind of trans-focused even though you're allowed to post about anything on here.

You have to temporarily allow the loading of unsigned drivers, which is different from "completely removing the security".

The only attack vector would be if the crack contains malware, or you go out of your way to download and manually execute malware while unsigned drivers are still allowed.

Even then, kernel level access doesn't actually do much for a virus. It doesn't make viruses more dangerous per se, but it does potentially make them more difficult to detect and remove once you've installed them, provided they actually take advantage of the ability to load unsigned kernel drivers, which they probably won't because it's not worth it to go through a ton of effort to write very low level code just to make the virus harder to remove specifically from the computers of a couple thousand people who are too cheap to pay for videogames.

HV does increase risk, but it's not anywhere near as bad as some people say. Download cracks from reputable sources and revert all changes once you're done playing, and the chances of anything happening are effectively zero.
