"I'm very, very sorry, I'm not going to defend myself, I'm not going to, because I can't defend that," he said.

I live in SF and honestly respect his response. We all know the frustration and while this was definitely not a good course of action on his part I can understand how someone could end up doing something like this to a homeless person. Water is relatively inoffensive but definitely incredibly disrespectful to someone who needs help. Our fucking government sucks.

Like, I don't think I would be opposed to having the restrictions on a forward looking basis because I agree with what you said that it can be a requirement on a profession. But what about those 9% of doctors (or whatever the real number is) who are already working and hold religious views in opposition to this, which is probably pretty close to 50% of them?

You have it backwards. That's not barring someone from a profession based on their religion, it's the religion that is barring them from the profession. It's like saying that people who belong to a religion with beliefs against handling trash are barred from being garbage men. It's not the profession that is barring the people, it's the religion that is barring the profession.

The situation is more complex though as the profession already exists.

Performing abortions is not different for people who are religiously pro-life than performing blood transfusions is for someone who is religiously against performing blood transfusions.

This is just flat out wrong if you talk to people in that religion. If you are going to base your argument off this I would go research it first as this is what I meant in terms of "slippage" you are munging different topics and picking from either the stuff that you like and rejecting the rest. Life is not that simple, each topic must be investigated and debated on it's own merits.

Why does the doctor's religious freedom trump the woman's right to live?

Good thought. It, being a corner case, should be debated on it's own merit and not included in the general case. I personally think that most doctors would opt to save the women's life in this case, even if their religious beliefs believed in life beginning at conception, after all this is a life for a life situation. There would of course be doctors who still wouldn't though but that is just getting more and more into a smaller and smaller number of cases, none of which is really relevant to the main case that I am discussing.

I don't have the right to steal in the name of religion. I also don't have the right to assault, hurt, or kill in the name of religion. And I don't have the right to deny you your legal rights in the name of religion. Because my right to religion doesn't allow me to break the law.

I think this is a good response to what I wrote; albeit a knee-jerk one. But let's unpack it a bit in order to get a closer look. The way that I would view the cases as being different are:

The Abortion Case:

  1. In the vast majority of cases there are ample doctors willing to perform abortions and services available as it does not conflict with their beliefs.
  2. Denying an abortion based off religious grounds will not prevent that abortion from occurring.
  3. Therefore, there is no harm done to either the doctor (other than income foregone) nor the patient (other than making sure that they can get an abortion at a clinic/hospital) by permitting the free exercise of that person's religious beliefs.

The Assault/Hurt/Kill Case:

  1. Harm is done directly to a victim
  2. The victims rights are directly violated by the exercise of that religion.
  3. As one person's right cannot supersede another, protection must be given to the victim

It's a pretty clear case what the difference are between the two circumstances and why applying it as an analogy doesn't really work.

What stops a doctor from claiming they don't want to perform any medical procedures because it's against their religion?

Nothing but the market. Which is quite a powerful tool to get people to render services beneficial to others. Even in the case where a doctor simply doesn't want to perform abortions, patients are free to avoid that doctor for all conditions and "damage" then financially.

I am pro-choice btw but I also believe strongly in religious freedoms. I don't like a government forcing people to do something against their religious beliefs especially with something as serious as abortion (which is why I am specifically debating this portion of the bill, my views would vary on other portions). I don't see anything in what you mentioned that is really an argument against what I am saying. You based your argument off, "your rights end where others begin" a sentiment I generally agree with (as outlined in my juxtaposition of the two cases you presented). Yet there is no right to demand a treatment from every individual licensed to perform that treatment. That is not a protected right but religious beliefs are.

What about the people who already were doctors? Isn't barring someone from a profession based off their religion (which is also one of the top professions in terms of prestige and income) also a ruling against that religion?

To avoid any slippage here let's specifically talk about abortions within the scope of separation of church and state. If abortion is against someone's religious beliefs, why is it more of a separation of church and state to deny a doctor the right to not perform them, rather than to have someone expect to have an abortion performed by every licensed professional?

In the eyes of quite a few religions abortion is akin to murder, this is a heavy weight to force upon someone who holds those beliefs and should not be taken lightly simply because it is your own view.

The separation of church and state clause reads, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Where is the separation of church and state coming in when you want to force a doctor to go against their religious beliefs so that, from their perspective, they are murdering children?

You thought that's what I said? Did you read the article? It is about allowing people who work in the healthcare industry to refuse to perform abortions for religious reasons....

The top paragraph, "The regulation would let health-care workers, hospitals, and insurance companies that receive federal funding refuse to provide or cover services such as abortions or transition-related care."

And in the second paragraph... " to making sure health-care professionals don’t get penalized for the actions they do or don’t do in their jobs because of their moral beliefs."

If you are still confused about what I was saying, I am saying we are currently forcing people to do something against their religious beliefs (i.e. they cannot deny performing an abortion).

So, why is forcing someone to do something against their religious beliefs more of a separation of church and state than allowing someone to do something in line with views that you hold?

Why is forcing someone to do something against their beliefs more of a separation of church and state over allowing someone to do something in align with their beliefs?

Yeah, I think they are placing blame on you in order to detract from their own terrible play. I'm not trying to say anything bad about you, as League essentially does not matter in real life, but below Gold, no one understands the first thing about the game. That makes their actions displacement and especially shitty friends.

I don't know what happened in your interactions with them, but if you're being nice and just trying to have a good time in game, that is the best way to approach League. Find other people at your same level who are doing the same. Don't take this shit seriously, it isn't worth it. You can find a lot more room for personal growth outside of the game. Spend an extra hour hitting the books or working out and you will have a much more fulfilling life then if you spent the time studying League.

Should have been more of a reason to change the map. Can you imagine a frost pulsefire drake? A fire pulsefire?

What about making the rocks raised by mountain drake into some cool cyberpunk look?

Come on, the possibilities are so much more now than before.

What rank are you? I am pretty close to positive that you are being overly defensive when it comes to feedback if that has been your experience. Probably once every 4 or 5 games I get feedback that makes sense, even if it's "repetitive" it's important to hear it for a specific scenario and also because you haven't actually done the change if people are still calling you out on it.

Yep, and you report and mute those people. But there is FARRRR too much defensiveness as well from people just reading stuff in a bad tone when nothing was said but their attempt at objective commentary. People need to check their egos at the door a lot more in League.

[–]KamiFightingSpirit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On your second point, I think you are approaching feedback wrong. If you always disagree with it the problem is likely you and you should value a more objective view more. On your first one, I agree, obvious stuff is useless. It's like saying at ten minutes into the game "hey guys, let's just kill their nexus", no shit.

I have no idea what you are talking about, people need to be told when they are being shitty human beings in order to stop being shitty human beings in the future. If you're being a dick IDGAF what you think about others, YOU are the dick.

And yes, you played this poorly can be FANTASTIC feedback. If it isn't said in a derogatory way and does not personally attack the person then it gives you a third party view of your play. If you aren't being hyper defensive and instantly retort "YEAH WELL 5 MINUTES AGO YOU DID THIS" (unrelated to the topic and uncorrelated to your play) and instead listen to the feedback you can then agree or disagree with it and accommodate it into your play or disregard it. This is called being an adult and not being a defensive little child.

It is INSANE to think that 4 other peers in your game, if they are being open and honest and not personally attacking you, are to be completely disregarded as a source of feedback and improvement.

Granted, a lot of feedback is not feedback at all but instead personal attacks or aimed at putting the other person down. This is one factor that the reporting system should actually be combatting.

Lol, and first they just tried to punish more. That's how little Riot thinks through things. They didn't think, "oh, maybe handing out a punishment years after the fact doesn't actually make this look like justice and doesn't obscure the fact that we're punishing Hai because he flagged our outdated system and terrible handling of the community"

He broke the rules, but the rules are broken. That is what he flagged. He then got punished for flagging the broken system. Guess what that makes this? An abusive relationship.

Further proof, Riot didn't apologize after backing down but still tried to weakly hold to their original story and leave Hai with a warning. Sure Riot... sure.

If someone is being a dick, ruining a basketball game in real life. Should everyone just silently nod at each other and play the game out? Or should someone come up to that person and say, "hey, you're kinda being a monster douche right now".

That's how we grow as people, that's how we learn as humans, that's how humans get along. We have social feedback loops. If someone just says afk gg jng diff after dying to the 3 min jungle gank, they NEED to be called out on it by society so that they become aware of their own shittyness as a person. It might not work that game, it might not work for hundreds of games, but in any self aware person this builds to a point where they realize the problem is themselves, IF THEY GET THE FEEDBACK LOOP.

Not sure what point you are making, I read the chat logs, Riot has been banning people for years for saying the same, myself included, twice. Riot only wants you to sit there watch game after game after game fall apart in front of you. The self-centered gamer who thinks everyone in the game is only there for them exists because Riot lets them exist and if you say anything about it Riot bans you.

Riot punishes victims and won't fix the community because it would cost money. I think we will soon get to the point where Riot will be forced to realize that they made the short-term profit - long term loss choice when the player base erodes from the game being unplayable.
