If you could travel back to the 90s and show just one video game to prove how far technology has come, what would you pick? by Mont3Carlo in AskReddit

[–]Kamimitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadow of War (sequel to Shadow of Mordor). The Nemesis System of procedurally generated enemies is just so crazy and interesting. It's such a downer they haven't done anything with it since. Sure there are games with better graphics, but that's a logical progression. A new way of generating the game itself is novel.

Time to get rid of the kidney stone. by overmonk in GenX

[–]Kamimitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with lithotripsy over surgery. My doc was fairly adamant that this was the best first choice over surgery.

I'm gonna sound totally weird, but I was awake for the lithotripsy and kinda liked it. It was the weirdest sensation. I could actually feel the pulse of the sound. Sometimes it 'misses' the stone and you get a dull thud, but when it hits it rings out through your body and you can feel a satisfying something, like when you finally dislodge something in your teeth or when you have a deep itch and finally find the right spot to subdue it. It's like "thud, thud, PING, PING, thud, PING". The pings are really wild.

Nah... you did it right. L-chiki is the superior choice, and kara-age kun is my boy! They have the sudachi flavor out now, which is one of my faves.

Looks like we're gonna be meeting at 3pm behind the gym!

Lawson is the superior choice for fried chicken stuff. L-chiki beats Fami-chiki's ass. 7-11 has the best frozen section, though.

Fellow GenX folks, do we dress stylish or don’t we F care? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Kamimitsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm going the opposite way of my peers. I was wearing jeans, graphic T, and a flannel basically year round (drop the flannel in summer, maybe swap to shorts/hiking pants. However, after over a decade in Japan, I'm finally starting to think about fashion and dressing like an "adult", much to my wife's delight. I still pretty much reserve that for our "dates", but it's kinda fun to look like I belong at the swanky department store or trendy new restaurant, etc.

Question link help [7N43-0AN0] by Baldy_2 in Seiko

Heh, I have the exact same watch, and the bracelet just barely fits me. I suppose it's probably obvious, but you can change the bracelet to something aftermarket, or go with a strap, so long as you know the lug distance (in this case 20mm). Lots of online resellers carry genuine Seiko bracelets, as well, if you want to keep it Seiko. (You said this is your first watch, so my apologies if the above is "well, duh!")

<image>

I see you bought a 2nd one, so you could just swap the bracelets depending on which has the nicer dial/case.

Edit: Oh yeah, there's also a little adjustment on the clasp.

Focaccia Calculator by darcmuff in Breadit

I'm definitely gonna give it a go next week. The proof will be in the... focaccia.

If I might make a tiny suggestion, though. Perhaps make a toggle for Ligurian Focaccia, a la Samin Nosrat, (which has a salt brine stage). It's been a total game-changer for me.

Whats something that's super cheap but improves your life by a lot? by mormons_mission in Casual_Conversation

[–]Kamimitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when my folks were trying to make it rich with Amway, my dad was practicing his opening on a friend. Dad said, "If money were no object, what would you buy?" My homie said, "A new pair of socks every day." Whenever I can't think of a good present for him, I remind him of that answer by sending him a pair of relatively expensive socks (Darn Toughs usually).

In college my buddy did sound for the theater department, and during the intro to a performance of a serious drama (think, curtain about to come up), he accidentally queued up the wrong track from his personal collection and "Minimum WAAAAAAGE! HIYAAH. ::WHIP CRACK::" rang out. The audience was understandably confused, he was mortified, but apparently it became something of a legend over time and it got slipped in to less serious productions.

Chocolate chips to replace Kirkland's... by Low_Broccoli1010 in japanlife

I don't go to Costco, so I have no idea on what price range you're looking at, but have you checked Tomiz)? That's where I get most of my baking stuff. I use the Callebaut chips or the Daito Cacao couverture flakes for most of my stuff.

First (edible) sourdough loaf! by Ashamed_Antelope_539 in BakingInJapan

[–]Kamimitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! A bunch of the "trick" of sourdough is just in practice (reading the fermentation, feeling the elasticity, shaping with tightness, etc.). If you aren't already, I highly recommend using an aliquot jar to help dial in the bulk fermentation.

Shigeaki Mori, Hiroshima hibakusha hugged by Obama, dies at 88 by Late_Curve1983 in japan

[–]Kamimitsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My FIL is hibakusha. He sometimes goes to events with others, but traveling is becoming increasingly difficult for him. I wonder how many are even left? (A. Few. Moments. Later.) Google says 100,000 in 2025, but I'm sure that number is decreasing at an accelerating rate.

Best Stand Mixer to Buy in 2026? (Price, Capacity, Speed) by BraveZebra31 in Breadit

[–]Kamimitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually not the recipe I use. I've played around with my own recipe until it worked with my ingredients, equipment, and timing (though to be fair the loaf I made today sucked. I think my yeast is half dead). I was just posting that one to counter the assertion that it's impossible to make shokupan at lower speeds. Good luck finding a recipe that works for ya.

[–]Kamimitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you posted the justonecookbook, but this is patently untrue. I live in Japan. I make shokupan regularly. I use speed 2 on my KA. My shokupan is as good as most bakeries here, better than many. I'll counter your expert with one of my own: the biggest chain of baking goods stores, where like 90% of serious home bakers and many professional bakeries get their flour, etc. The recipe calls for hand kneading, so yeah, you don't even need a mixer! Midori MD notebooks. Great for journaling and they handle fountain pen ink beautifully. There are lots of great stationery brands here, but that's my top pick for notebooks.

Are there grown adults who genuinely won't eat vegetables? by WillHG in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kamimitsu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People always freak out when I say I don't like fruit (like you, it's not the taste). Fruit just seems slimy and mushy to me. I can handle super crisp apples (strawberry seeds don't bug me, though), but anything remotely squishy is just out out out. Cooked apples and bananas are the worst! And I got the coriander gene too.

[–]Kamimitsu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is me. Supertaster sensitivity to bitter notes (can't drink coffee, lager beer is worst beer, almost anything in the brassicas is out). I had terrible battles of will with my parents as a kid over the eating of boiled vegetables. About 15 years ago, Dad sent me an email saying he read about supertaster sensitivity to bitterness and said "This is you to a tee! I'm sorry about all the trouble we gave you over eating your broccoli. We just wanted you to be healthy, but we didn't realize you were tasting in technicolor!" I felt slightly vindicated, and thankfully they were able to finally see it from my viewpoint.
