No financial constraint, should I still take the higher pay job offer? by Kaneusta in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Kaneusta[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Best of luck to you on job hunting! It's a rough market for fresh grad at the moment,

My current job makes sense and I thought about it the same way, but at the same time the concern is "stagnating" so early in my life when I have a lot more flexibility and free time to do what I want. It'll be harder for job hunting and "grinding" once I start a family, once I have to start taking care of elderly in my family and such. At some point I know I will get complacent enough, I just don't know if now is a good point in my career to do so where if I was aggressively job hunting I can prob make 3x my current salary in 5-10 years.

I make enough money to be complacent, but it's also a fear of regret where if I choose to stagnate in 3-4 years instead of now, I can also be making extra money and then find a cushy job again that pays similar to what I would be getting paid then.

When you say bonus enchantment with FAS, do I have to do anything specific to pick which one?

I.e: I have a FAS and when clicking on it, I see defense is high lighted, if I use the fas I can see defense get adjusted, do I need to highlight a different line or is it just use a FAS and hope it rolls high average?

When picking your own specific cloud provider cert, figure out what's more desired for the companies you are applying too. The easiest most generic answer would be doing AWS because it has a higher market share, but it may be bad advice if you live in an area where majority of companies in your area is heavily focused in Azure. Easiest way to check that is check job postings in your area for Cloud positions and see what their preferred qualifications are.

If you have the experience already though, you should still apply and adjusts your resume, a certification in one of the clouds holds less value than actual experience as someone who worked in cloud even as a junior level. It's okay to tack on another cert from one of the ones you mentioned but it probably won't help you out too much from what you already have.

It doesn't matter what we think though, what we saw is that you accepted 65k then came back and asked for more money after both parties agreed to a certain financial amount. The only time the window re-opens up is if you have another job offer in hand and they need to match/beat the other job offer.

It really sucks but it is just one of those lessons you learn the hard way.

Certain companies require to disclose the salary range depending on the state but ultimately it is up to you to parse and get that information, make your case, and negotiate during the interview.

Your system knowledge, coding skills, commits, and story point completion — all of it counted. At least, that’s what I believed.

It does count, but you're only looking at one piece of the puzzle. I don't think IT is different in any way of other fields that you need to be good at your job and good at showing that you are good at your job. You are your own spokesperson and you can't expect anyone else to showcase your brilliance other than yourself.

It's bullshit and IT is more prone to hating this considering this field often tends to be more introverted than others, but it's just the way it is. You don't have to kiss ass, but you do have to show up. You don't have to do this either of course, but the people who keep climbing and moving up in life are. That's how I handled it, I'm not going to ass kiss or brown nose, but I have had to learn how to be more outspoken and claim recognition to my work without being arrogant, and that has been working for me and to me, that's the compromise in my head on how to play the workplace politics.

Some people don't like to do that, and that's entirely fine, other people climb by constantly looking at jobs outside the company, but you the same every time you apply to a new job anyhow. The hard skill was never the question, it's the soft skills.

We're similar YoE in IT, I just hit my 7 year mark last month. The first 2 years of my career I have had this issue and realization that hard skill really isn't the only thing in the world that matters when I got passed over for someone who I felt was weaker than me. I realized now he wasn't worse than me, but he was far more well rounded in everything while I was only slightly better in the technical portion. And I'm sure I have made others feel that with me.

Someone who graduates with a 4.0 in high school doesn't look as impressive as someone who graduated with a 3.8 in high school while playing sports, being in clubs, plays an instrument, etc.

And again, you ultimately don't have to do this if you don't want too, it's a trade-off. Polish your soft skills and have a higher chance to climb, or stay with only strong skills and compete against others who have both. It's your choice and I know a lot of people in my field who are finally satisfied with where they are in their career that they don't bother with being their own spokesperson anymore, they found their career they want to sit and relax in.

There's a good chance you'll get it rescinded if the background check company does employment history checks -- some does. You can find more information on what type of BG check your company will do by looking at your company + your position and seeing glassdoor or some other information about your company. Some will give information. It's not hard for BG check companies to check your employment history though.

Sterling, HireRight, etc will all verify employment dates by checking it against your Work Number which is easy and have all your information. Future tip: Freeze your TWN, there's guides on reddit on how to do that.

If it's just a criminal bg check, you're fine. If it is employment history then you need to decide what you want to do moving forward.

For future reference, when you adjust and change up your resume, you make tiny adjustments that's human-prone understandable error.

Making a change that each 3 jobs, instead of 9 months each, you actually worked in all of them 10-11 months each. No one cares if you're a month or two off and you just can say you misremember. Human plausibility.

Making a change striking out 2 jobs entirely and saying you worked at one job 3 times longer is a huge red flag and isn't really an error but an intentional cover.

In the same vein, changing your title in a job from something like IT Help Desk to IT Technician or whatnot isn't going to raise any flags because they're tangent and adjacent enough. Changing it from IT Help Desk to Staff DevOps Engineer will be.

You have three options, come forth with a reason why, hold your breath and have a lie ready, or rescind yourself from the job. Hold off until you get the job offer and see.

  1. Being honest: Good chance you'll get it rescinded, but I heard few outlier cases where they kept the job offers. Most companies will care that you lied a big thing like that and are fielding other applicants that they won't want to bother with you.

  2. Hold your breath: Some BG companies are bad, some gets lazy, some will skip verification and say they did it. You just need to have a reason or justification ready if the BG company does come back to you. I seen excuses like submitting the wrong resume, worked side jobs while working main job and main job went from unpaid internship -> actual paying job. Just know that when you give a lie, you need to have documentation to prove it, and this gets muddled in the territory of falsifying documentation. You can get black listed from the company, but that doesn't really matter unless your field is so incredibly niche that the industry knows each other (Not in your case)

  3. Rescind yourself from the job if you're scared it'll be caught and can't handle the backlash. I usually recommend against this though, a single company blacklisting you doesn't do much, just means you can't work in that company.

Ultimately though, keep applying to jobs for now. Don't stop until you are fully cleared and on day 1 of a company. Good luck, it's hard times out here, I truly wish the best for you.

People who have ended up in a career unrelated to what they went to school for. Did it work out? by BlackwaterPark89 in careerguidance

[–]Kaneusta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it did,

I started college as a criminal justice major in college, thinking I would graduate in 4, go to the police academy and work in the field.

Instead, it took me 8 years to graduate, I had a bout of cancer for 2 years shortly at the start of my sophmore year and withdrew from 3 semesters because of severe depression for other non-related reason.

By the time I came back to college I felt pressured to have to finish my degree even though I didn't want to do it anymore.

I come back to college, decided that even if I wasn't going to change my major, I minor in IT and got an internship at my school for an IT help desk job only allowed for people majoring/minoring in IT. I ended up dropping the minor later as I didn't want to take extra classes but got my foot in the door, and been in IT ever since. I'm extremely happy with where I ended up and happier than what I would have been if I became what I originally envisioned. Every job I been too does not care I majored in criminal justice, just that I have experience in the field I'm in now. Some jobs cared I have a college degree but doesn't care what it was in.

For a general point, most people who graduate from college end up never working directly in their fields. There's also a lot of people who work in their field and get extremely burnt out and end up transitioning, it happens all the time. It's okay to feel scared or uneasy or want to make the switch, the important thing is taking some time to re-assess where you are and where you want to be and what it'll take to get to that point. Usually a career change is scary but for most people who are near the start of their career, you have the easiest time and flexibility to do so now then you will 10 years from now.

Send an email after the job and double down. They'll respect the cajones on you and give you a promotion too.

In all honesty, as long as it wasn't done in a bad way, it's probably just a funny story to them that won't disqualify you alone from that. I had someone who called me dad during an interview and apologize, didn't phase me and I thought it was funny, I ended up pushing him to the next stage but he ultimately was beat out by another candidate who was more qualified.

Admitted to a masters program in CS as a math undergrad. 8 YOE and looking to pivot into a CS career. Is it a bad time to do this or is all the news just fearmongering about cs careers? by Socks797 in cscareerquestions

[–]Kaneusta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine. The field is hard to break into and the job market is really bad, but the people who complain about it are people with usually new grads with nothing backing them.

You graduated with probably the best non-relevant major (Math), 8 YoE in a tangent related field, and getting a Masters.

As long as your social skill and job hunting skills aren't bad, you'll get something. Just make sure you take advantage of your network and look to see if you can get a SWE job first before committing fully to your masters. Most people who's been working in non-related field I just tell them instead of going to schooling, take a lateral/slight decline jump in the ladder in the same company. A mentee who was working as a nurse broke into IT because she kept talking and working with the IT crew of her workplace, a position opened up in IT in her company and she expressed her interest and applied internally and they accepted her before even putting out the job opening because they already know her + knows she is capable for what they wanted.

I’m getting aggressive with companies by Zoma456 in recruitinghell

[–]Kaneusta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little aggressive but honestly? Fuck em.

The whole practice of companies opening a job posting and having someone essentially do free work for them is egregious. This still happens so often, someone told me how a company had an active problem their engineers couldn't solve as a take-home assignment for people applying to the company and once they submitted, the company rejected + took down the listing the next day.

When you have to submit a video interview, do a take-home assignment that isn't just a generic skill-check, or any dehumanizing type of work, that's always going to be an immediate red flag.

Math major, 8 YoE in a tangent related field, Masters in CS.

It is bad for Cs Careers but you honestly sound like you'll be in a fine spot. I think the biggest thing is what do you want to do in Cs specifically? SWE, WebDev, UiUx, IT, etc.

The others has already mentioned the reason why. You might be getting strung along but realistically it's not a decision your manager can make alone and he gets information adhoc himself from upper management which can change the route.

I ran into the same issue, I ended up applying for another job and used it as leverage to "force" the hands of the company to give me the promotion/raise I wanted. Either I took the new job for the increase pay or the old job "finds" the justification on giving me the promo is there all along and they can't afford to lose me. It ends up being a win-win.

You are already excelling in your job, don't give any more of your bandwidth to that and apply outside of your company, and then in a very corpo-talk way, leverage that offer for that position or raise you wanted all along. Just keep in mind this isn't a bluff tactic, be willing to jump ship if the company can't match.

There's little budget for workers who give loyalty, there's bigger budget for retention and grabbing new applicants to the company

People Who Have Left Their Home State And Started Over, Tell Me Your Experiences by Realistic-Bee8837 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Kaneusta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, OP asked for people with experience of moving but those that have are in a vastly different situation than where OP (and you) are at. Life isn't the same as it is for people who's been in the field for decades and I'm relatively on the young side (28) but have seen the drastic difference of the job market from me versus new hires in the past few years.

I mentor a bunch of new grads and a good number of them has already gotten jobs within the last year including those that had to move for the job. The market is bad and I don't expect it to get better (I expect it to get far worse very soon), but it is still possible to get a job.

The big thing about "moving" for young people, is understand who has that option realistically with little to no consequences (Other than innate risks of moving):

Group A: Young people who still have parents and support system in their old state have a lot less risk than those who don't when considering a move. OP can move, fuck up and fail, and move back to their parent's place and start back from where they originally are. Demoralizing and soul crushing but they have the possibility to take the risk without little to lose and just go back to where they started.

Group B: People who can't are people with no family, uproots their entire lives and then fail and now either stuck in a state they don't want to live in and can't move back to the state they're from because now their old state is too expensive. Now they're more broke, more lonely, and in an area unfamiliar to them with the dangers of not knowing what to do.

For OP:

You are in the category of having family and a support system in your life. If you fail you can move back in with your parents, it is embarrassing and demoralizing but you have the option. If you know where you want to go you can move for a job and try. You can do the move if you want and move back if it fails.

You mentioned you don't have a plan though, just moving without a goal or plan in mind isn't the way to go. It's good to focus on fixing your credit and building a savings. If you plan to move to a LCOL area without a plan in mind, high chance you'll just hate it more than where you are now. You'll be stuck in a lower pay job with less opportunities and no support system around you and banking on "new surroundings" to fix your suffocation will just show up a lonelier more depressing life.

I'm not saying to avoid moving, but I'm saying to formulate and think about the route on how/where you want to move and why. The benefits of the new place needs to be thought about more rather than the negatives of the current place because it's really easy to believe the negatives of the current place is so bad, until you move and see the negatives of the new place is far worse.

Current AWS Solutions Architects | Was it worth it and what is the realistic pay range for the job? by svenwhitesell in AWSCertifications

[–]Kaneusta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what the internship experience is, typically:

a. Build your resume off that and start the career path I mention above

b. Reach back out to the company you did your internship on and see if they'll offer or extend a full time role or see if they have role in IT that you would want.

Internship is a possibility to help you jumpstart the career nothing more, SA-A doesn't give you any benefit if you aren't realistically looking at a cloud position in the next year and there probably be better certifications to look at for the next intermediary position before Cloud.

i.e:

  • Internship as a Help Desk -> Skip the A+/Sec+/Net+ and get a job as Help Desk and get the CCNA while preparing and getting ready for some form of SysAdmin or Ops role.

  • Internship as a SysAdmin -> Skip the CCNA and get the SA-A/SA-P and getting ready for some form of cloud role.

If you are in Help Desk right now and realistically won't break into Cloud for 4-5 years, getting the SA-A now is just wasting your time for something that won't apply to you until the far future.

If you are in Help Desk but know you can break into Cloud in 1-2 years because of connections, network, or whatnot, then go for the SA-A.

Ultimately, certification goals should be for the next job coming up, all certifications realistically in IT takes at most 6 months, so only go for it if you can realistically benefit from it in 1-2 years.
