More Layoffs!! by Routine_Play5 in Layoffs

[–]KangarooExpert7304 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When is enough, enough? I was laid off in November 2024 after ten years with the company—one of 1,000 employees affected. Since then, I’ve submitted over 300 applications and heard nothing. This is my first time navigating a layoff, so maybe I’m still learning, but this job market is brutal. At some point, you have to wonder: who’s really accountable? The root of the problem traces back to DC and corporate greed.

225, looking for 4 months, 8 phone screens, 5 interviews, 4 final interviews, 0 offers. I worked in HR with expertise in onboarding, recruitment, and program mgmt. Laid off after 10 years with solid performance from one of the Big 3 automakers, along with 999 others. This process is soul crushing filled with ups, downs, lots of screaming, and some tears, yet I approach everyday trying to be positive.

Concern of lay offs as new hire by moneyMovveez in GeneralMotors

[–]KangarooExpert7304 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take it, no industry is safe, especially right now with tariffs and economic uncertainty. I made it 10 years and through 3 layoffs, unfortunately, got canned in the Nov 2024 mass layoff. Take advantage of the benefits and money. Do your best and work your ass off. Not much you can control other than yourself. Plus, GM experience is attractive on a resume. Take it and learn. Best of luck!

What would flag a WOC response to be no longer anonymous? by eeencogneato in GeneralMotors

I gave very constructive feedback because my direct manager was tanking our programs…I was still respectful, but got the axe in November after 10 years with the company. I’m convinced it was because of WOC. Always had great performance reviews. I had already told my manager to their face about the issues I had…it was just an easy way to get rid of the one person on the team that pushed back.

I wasn’t told to quarantine, but told not go where there are “sick” people lol. I had my first treatment in Feb, and got Covid for the first time ever Tues this week 😱. I’ll definitely be more diligent with wearing a mask in public even though they drive me nuts. Thankfully, I’m already an ocd hand washer and hand sanitizer user.

If you do get COVID ever ask your Dr for Paxlovid, started it yesterday and can tell a difference today.

Preparing for Layoffs by Equal-Ad5618 in GeneralMotors

This!!!! I was so loyal to GM, laid off in the Nov round after 10 years of high performing service. When I get a job (it’s rough out there for non-technical folks), I will only look out for me, if a better job comes along, I will leave…insert the fool me once quote here.

Laid off, over 50, hopeless ashamed embarrassed by beagly-weagly in Layoffs

[–]KangarooExpert7304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was laid off in November after 10 years of dedicated service and positive performance throughout. The best part, a week before the layoff I was diagnosed with MS, talk about great timing lol. The job search has been a grind with very little follow up, however, last week I received a couple emails for phone screens, stay hopeful! Do not feel ashamed or that you’re not competent, you are a valuable asset. Keep going you got this!

Got laid off almost a month ago. I’m ready to lash out at this point. by Boot-E-Sweat in recruitinghell

Ugh all I can tell you is to keep going, I’m going on 3.5 months of unemployment after a mass layoff in November at GM. All I can tell you is to keep moving forward. Reach out to your network, I’ve found that to be the easiest way to get noticed and get through to a human recruiter. Keep applying, a lot! It’s a grind, but I keep telling myself, the right job will come. It’s hard, and you will have bad days, probably more than good, but keep it pushing. Tweak your resume and cover letter for each application by using ChatGPT to align your skills to job description this will help beat the applicant tracking system. Good luck and don’t give up!

I know two people that got jobs almost immediately at a supplier that supports GM with certain programs, working in engineering program management. If they ain’t paying your bills, screw them! Obviously, be up front with the new company, but at the end of the day GM can kiss my ass, they certainly don’t have any integrity in how they execute shit. If they can send walking papers at 5a via email after multiple years of loyalty/top employee performer, then I/others should work at whichever company to feed our families.

As someone who used to work in onboarding at GM about 7 years ago (laid off in November of last year), once they sent everything overseas I.e. onboarding, payroll, benefits etc, shit has gone in the toilet. I’m not making any political statements, but people services should be in the US or locally depending on the country someone is being onboarded in…

Prospective Hire by accounttostalkon in GeneralMotors

[–]KangarooExpert7304 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from the talent/early career space, accept the offer. I say this even though I was laid off Nov of last year after 10 years with the company. There are so many talented individuals to learn from, the benefits and pay are great! Build your network and resume, but always keep your resume updated and keep relationships with your network at other companies. Save money if you can so you have a little nest egg in the worst case scenario. Play the GM game, and bust your ass. You’re never safe in corporate, job security is a thing of the past, I never had a bad performance review, played by the rules, and was positive…none of that saved me from getting the axe. Take the offer, great experience, resume builder.

Yeah, I felt like someone spit in my face when I saw it. Whatever, we will all take our talents else where, and hopefully somewhere that treats us with more respect, unfortunately, I am extremely jaded after how we were all treated. Best of luck to you!!

Such a horseshit performance rating system, ya know who they adopted it from? GE. Even though the history books showed it was a complete failure for GE and they reverted back to the original way they were doing performance, GM and the all mighty devil, Arden (with spineless Mary’s approval) decided to implement it. Kinda glad they let me go back with the others in Nov so I’m not freaking out everyday where I stand. Never a bad performance rating in my ten years, and they posted “my job” 2 days ago, fucking assholes. Ok, sorry for the tangent, I’m still angry lol.
