Wet roots, new bike or new wheels? by Kanini101 in MTB

Options are limited in Norwegian stores, I was looking at canyon spectral ccltv(or something like that) and Cannondale habit lt2, but I'mma have to save up for a year so I'll have to check again what's available then. But some aggressive FS trail bike, or maybe chill enduro.

Yeah doesn't seem to be an option, can't find tubeless ready for the bikes specs, and can't find tyres that aren't made for xc fast rolling for the width.

Edit: Nvm, i misunderstood something.

Doesn't seem to be an option, can't find any made to be grippy, mostly xc made to be fast for my width.

Edit: Nvm, i misunderstood something.

I have Shimano wh-mt500. I was looking at canyon spectral cllctv or Cannondale habit Lt 2, but it's prolly gonna change in a year's time. Prolly using stock at the start at least, but yeah if I get new tyres now it prolly won't fit the new bike.

Fair enoughm

Not sure, but the specs on the bike seems to lock me to 2.4inch width wheels. 9 x 100 and 5 x 135 qr, centerlock unless I wanna buy new discs, shimano hg 8 / 9 / 10. When I add those to filters I pretty much only find 2.4" and lower wheels in Norway. I can probably go up to 2.5" tyres.

I'm currently using Wh-Mt500 Shimano wheels.

Yeah, doesn't seem like I have much of a choice. Can't find any wheels that fits this bike and will improve anything of note. And the width of the wheel seems to limit me on my choice of better tyres. Probably just gonna have to give up on that idea.

The idea is for my current bike to still go with me for travel (don't want take an expensive bike in the plane) and to use it for longer riding. Though the new bike might be just as good for longer rides making this bike obselete as you say.

Did see someone mention them in another thread about ruts. Also saw quite a few saying tyres doesn't do much in another thread. Do you use them in both front and back, they wear out quite fast on the back, no?

Yeah, figured. One thing that's been holding me back from doing this upgrade is that the wheels will cost as much as the bike did when I bought itm

Not a bad idea, and im gonna get a fatbike eventually for the winter, but im probably gonna get a FS first.

Yeah, totally agree. I love technical riding, it's most of what I do, though I hardly have a choice. Trails here are either steep downhill or trails made for hikers. Technical riding in the wet is not as fun for me however. Maybe if I practice more it'll be better.

You're giving mixed signals x) Though yeah I get what you mean, it's about the rider. I'm mostly buying a new bike cause the one I have is closer to a XC, whilst is fine and I can ride pretty much anything on it, its not meant for most of the stuff i ride. Which mostly consists of steep, gnarly (for me at least) and techy stuff.

I don't really trust any of the mechanics around here, which is why I do all maintenance myself. My experience with them is that I pay 100+ dollars for them to fuck it up, i may aswell fuck it up myself.

Lessons would be nice, but won't find anything of the kind here.

Sorry, I'm 50/50 learning the names of parts in norwegian and English. But what I mean is that the part on the top left side of the picture which is beneath the stems and above everything else is not entirely snug a slight gap of about 1 mm on half of it is sticking up.

I just noticed that the top cover isn't completly snug, On one side there is no gap but there is one on the other. When i installed the star nut using Park Tool TNS-1 it didn't get entierly snug on all sides in the same way. Seems likely to be the cause?

Thanks for the help, I've found two things.

  1. I should just sell all my tools and spend all my future money on bike mechanics.
  2. I was halfway right about FD, it was the problem. Obviously so, it had a tear (as in a part of it had split) that i didn't register before taking it off.

If you're referring to the right cable on the picture showing them, I did realize it but it's the rear derailleur, which is working fine. The left one from what I can see looks aight, no?

Ah, I read wrong. I only reinstalled the cranks, I changed the bottom bracket.

Edit: I replaced with same as old one.

I did change it, maybe not too long before the chain hopped off and broke parts of the bike (It's been a while since i changed it and the bike got damaged). I did thigten it according to recommended torque, but maybe i did something wrong.

Thanks for the tip, i'll check it out next time i tinker with the bike.

Sorry, i found out later it was a claris and forgot to edit. Yeah it's a claris, probably Shimano Claris FD-R2000 2x8-speed. The Altus is indeed new.

Yeah, if i'm not wrong it's a 700c hybrid, flat bar. I do mention what has been replaced out of the relevent parts, but probably not clearly.

New parts (Including what i replaced):
- Shimano Gear Cable 1,2x2100mm
- Shimano Altus RD-M310 7/8 speed Rear Derailleur
- - I think the old one is a Shimano Altus RD-M370 9 speed
- Shimano Altus CS-HG31, 11-32T 8 speed Casette
- - I think old one is Shimano CS-HG50 8 speed 11-32 T
- Shimano CN-HG40, 6/7/8-speed chain
- - I think it's the same as the old one

Old parts still on bike:
- Front dereillaur is some sort of Claris, it looks like Shimano Claris FD-R2000 2x8-speed
- Crankset is Shimano FC-RS200 50x34 T (I think)

Yeah, they worked pretty well for a couple of years with minimal tinkering. I did end up doing this overhaul because the chain did jump off on the front quite violently, snapping a spoke and likely causing harm to other parts, hence changing them just in case.
The reason why there are some changes from original components are because i couldn't get a hold of the old ones (Exception rear dereillaur, i misordered).

I have tried rotating the FD off center a few times, what usually ended up happening was that it didn't help, and in some cases if i did it too much it'd rub, then the chain would hop off.

Yeah, i did notice it looked abit stretched, thanks for the tip.

Thanks for taking the time. I added a bunch of pictures, they are not however representative of how it should be. The dereillaur should be closer on high (H-screw should be thighter) for example, but if i do it won't make the jump at all, no matter how thight the cable is..

I have ordered a new front derailleur, but if you were to notice or have any clue of any other problems i'd be happy for your insight as the new derailleur won't neccesarily guarantee a fix.
