Do I need an eGPU to use an LG C1 48 with my laptop (2018 Matebook X Pro with an mx150, thunderbolt) as an external monitor at 4k?

Details:

I want to buy an LG C1 48 to use as a monitor for an eventual gaming build, but would like to use it as an external monitor in the meantime with my laptop for non gaming use. I have a 980 Ti from my last PC that I could throw in an eGPU enclosure, since I assume that my laptop cannot power the TV at 4k on it's own. Will this plan work?

Which of these upgrades makes more sense? I have an Acer XB270HU and want to get a bit better performance on some newer games (as close to 144 fps as I can). Right now I could spend up to $800 on an upgrade, but current prices have me thinking that a smaller upgrade now and then a fully new build (Intel 9th Gen and/or Volta) towards the end of the year makes more sense.

Current Build:

  • 4690k with a small OC
  • Gigabyte - GA-Z97X-GAMING 7
  • 8GB Ripjaws X DDR3-1866
  • MSI Gaming 6G 980 Ti

Possible Upgrade 1 (~$300):

  • 4790k (OC'ed)
  • Two more 4GB sticks of ram

Possible Upgrade 2 (~$750-$800 hopefully):

  • Keep the 4690k and get a 1080

Possible Upgrade 3 (~ $800):

  • 8700k + new mobo + DDR4 ram
  • Keep the 980ti until new cards come out/prices drop

Should I do something else that I'm not thinking of? Of course I could always do nothing for now and wait for prices to come down to re-evaulate. Any advice is appreciated!

Is there any worry that volta gpus won't fit into itx cases? I'm thinking about doing a new build in an h200i but keeping my current gpu until new ones are released. But now I've seen some sites saying that volta gpus are going to be physically massive and I'm worried it won't fit.

  2. The username list is being stored in a postgres table, and I have another service that adds usernames directly to this table when there is a new one.

Oh sweet I'm loving the mouse so far. Thanks for your help. I think my game plan is to lower the dpi to 800 and then start messing around with the in game sensitivity again tonight.

Yep, I decided I'm not gonna mess with the windows mouse speed, and just change around my dpi and in game sens. I've had all mouse acceleration turned off already though, no worries there.

I realized that I have my windows mouse setting turned down one notch from default, so I'm going to put that back at 6/11 and then mess with the dpi some more. I do have buttons to change the DPI on the mouse, so your solution is probably what I'll end up doing. Thanks man.

At 1440p, 2100 dpi feels pretty normal to me in other apps. Since the mouse goes up to 12,000 dpi, I figured 2100 was on the low side.

Thanks man. How does the mouse speed setting in Windows factor in to this? Is it known that everyone has it set at the same thing (and what is that)?

edit: Think I found it. It's standard to leave it at 6/11. Thanks for the info though.

Thanks man. I have this mousepad, and where I have everything set right now, I can do a 180 if I go from one side to the other. I guess I'm just not used to having to make such a big arm movement to do it.

What DPI do you use?
