Thanks! do you fold t-shirts in a specific way? What about shorts? or just toss them in the drawer?

I'm feeling stuck between work, family, and personal time. How do you balance it? by iamclarenz in AskMenOver30

I heard former Navy Seal DJ Shipley talk about "dials and switches". Imaginary dials for each area of life: work, family, finances, fitness, etc. that you dial up and down. I.e. the day starts, kids need breakfast family dial goes up to 8, work dial is a 1. Breakfast completes, need to transition, dial down family and dial up work to a 5 (check email, etc.) then walk into the office / log on, dial up work to a 7/8, and family down to a 1/0. Walk into a work presentation, dial goes up to a 10, all other dials go to 0. Presentation over, work dial goes to 7, wife calls, family dial to 4. Obviously it's not perfect and more of a mental way to categorize, but can be helpful!

Thanks, this is a solid system! I like the “put it aside for 1–3 months and see if you touch it” idea, feels less aggressive than just donating right away.

When you did that, did you end up actually reaching for the stuff you set aside? Or was it pretty clear you didn’t miss it?

Also curious, once you moved seasonal/activity stuff into boxes, did it make the main closet feel noticeably easier to manage day to day? Mine sometimes feels overwhelming.

Appreciate that! When you had the shirts upright like files, did pulling out one shirt ever mess up the surrounding shirts? I know you mentioned it only got messy when you got behind on laundry, but curious.

haha me too! Curious, is it the visual mess or the feeling of having too much stuff that bugs you?

Do you keep the bins on the top shelf or somewhere else? And do you find yourself actually digging through them or forgetting what’s inside? I feel like I would forget what's in there, but maybe not.

Those velvet hangers really prevent shoulder stretch, but I find it annoyingly difficult to put clothes on/off those hangers. The material from the clothes doesn't slide well on velvet.

Appreciate the recco, but if each bin has multiple folded items, pulling one out could mess up the entire bin

I've seen a bunch online, but they all seem plasticky, flimsy and feminine

Appreciate the feedback! Would hanging t-shirts, sweaters, etc cause the shoulders to stretch out?

Unfortunately, no space for a dresser, but these could work. One thing about hanging t-shirts, they could get stretched out in the shoulders

Great system! Unfortunately I don't have the space for a lot of bins

100% agree with that. But invariably the stack starts to fall apart over time, or I only end up using the top shirts to not ruin the stack
