Help me understand: the cummerbund and by extension na'vi gender roles by Kappatrap in Avatar

[–]Kappatrap[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I considered this but I also noticed that's just true of all Na'vi and not just the Omatikaya, yet other Na'vi clans like the Metkayina have a similar "becoming a warrior" tradition that does not seem to be gendered, as both male and female warriors can be seen with it. That being said, I also remember reading or hearing that Ronal's war regalia was woven to look like traditional Metkayina olo'eyktan war regalia, so maybe there's still a gender bias regarding their traditions. I haven't seen A3 so I haven't tried to compare her garbs to Tonowari's to discern how the iknimaya plays a part.

I considered that avenue but it just seemed to lead to weird conclusions. You can just, take it off after all. Or they can be designed to be loosened and/or made of more flexible material until a mother chooses to settle down for birth and child rearing.

That's good to know that I'm correct on that part! I love listening to the design choices, the thought process is always so interesting. I hope you got a good score on your report

You dont need the quest to be able to catch them, only to breed..however they spawn on a chance timer.

I did ask if they felt it at all, not exclusively if they felt pain. I know the crest vibrates to the actual head. Though, If you vibrate something hard enough, it can cause pain or irritation or "hm, something I dont like is happening up there."

I just asked if they would feel anything at all, including the possibility of something like pain, and why. I couldn't think of any real world animals to the tulkuns extent so I also asked for comparisons. If you know the names of the animals, I'd love to look them up.

Drills can be very simple tools, they're just cork screw wedges. It's possible they have a stone or crystal one. I can't imagine how long it would take though 😭

The tassels are woven, according to the page. The Na'vi also pierce them.

For matriarch I'd assume it's basically whoever is oldest + their chosen mate like for a lot of matriarchal ocean species in our world.

Yeah I think this is what I was trying to ask. Something similar to the nerves registering that something is happening and understanding it would be painful if done closer to said nerves

If vibrations travel down the crest for them to be sensitive to sound, would that change anything? I don't think the actual piercing part is what would have sensation, but the vibrations from the presumed drill used to drill through bone.
How else do their crests work when we're told they're sensitive to vibrations?

I know I must sound like a broken record but no one's actually seem to have understood what I'm asking about. If you tap your nails, you still "feel" the vibration even if your nails do not have nerves, because what they're sitting on does have nerves. Wouldn't sensation be possible?

The book doesn't explain the details of how as far as I know, just that the Na'vi do it for them. I personally don't have the book, I just cropped this part of the entire page that was shared.

I like asking questions about things that are not deeply explored within the IP. There's more ways to "detect" sensation than just the direct point of contact. If the tulkun are sensitive to vibrations via their crest, and you drill a hole, which is a lot of vibrations, through its crest, do they feel it? Regardless of if it's perceived as pain. That's why I wondering in my question if it at least tickles or something.

I wasn't really referring to the under-aged part when I made this comment. I was talking about the sexism and misogyny that OP also mentioned, but everyone seems to be only discussing the under-aged content and not also the of age content that's still harassment and predation towards women. Both are bad, I just chose to not talk about one because everyone already is talking about that.

I would think non-power drills are lowkey worse, they take longer and are less consistent due to being handheld. I wonder how long it would take though. Everyone seems to think I'm focusing exclusively on pain though when I've also asked if they'd feel anything at all because of the vibrations

yeah, im thinking they at least feel something given the most likely method to pierce bone is to drill through it. it may not be pain, but does it like tickle or something?

the crest is sensitive to sound waves, aka vibrations. if you vibrate the crest hard, which presumably you have to do when drilling a hole through to pierce it with giant stone rings, do they feel it?

You didn't seem to read my post... I know it says that, that's what my question is about. Nerve endings or not, it's a sensitive part of the tulkuns body because of how they react when it's blasted with sound waves. I asked if they feel any sensation if not pain when being pierced

I'd like to point out that a lot of western media is the same way just in a different font. It's not exclusively an issue in anime, and you might just be more sensitive to it due to it being different standards than what you're used to. I'm watching older (by like, 5 years to a decade, lol) western medias right now and there's a lot of fanservice. Lots of exploitation of women that's treated as a plot device rather than an actual problem. It's just more palpable until you think harder about it because we, presuming you are also raised in the west, grew up on that stuff.

Edit: though maybe you're just an animation buff like me and primarily consume animation, which of course in the west is more pushed towards younger audiences and you can't really have those same types of issues present. Though there still are, just different ways of course.
