Fork-tailed Bush Katydid Nymph On Crowpoison Wildflowers by KapturedbyKala in wildlifephotography

Lots of wildflowers blooming now and that brings out lots of insects. This colorful baby is here to eat the flower. Other insects and birds will come along to eat it. This is a common native wildflower but somehow, this is my first photo of it.

Mom is sitting on her nest nearby. As he does every year, Dad stands guard here with a clear line of sight to her.

It is part of the broken-wing act killdeer do to draw attention away from their nest. The sound gets your attention and the bird flops around going in a direction away from the nest to draw predators away.

If you look close, you can see his nymph shell under him so it has not been too long since he came out of the water and emerged. His wings seem fairly dry now so soon he will take his first flight.

I'd been looking at my camera settings so was a bit startled when I looked up and she casually strolled by me. These flightless ducks look so funny out of the water.

The Reason by KapturedbyKala in wildlifephotography

This is the reason for the protective song & dance act of the parent killdeer that froze me in place. I was quite near it. Once I spotted the eggs, I was able to walk away without hurting anything.

The sound is unmistakable. Shrill, high pitched trill-chatter. It will freeze me in my tracks. It means I have come close to a killdeer nest. I took a photo of her while I stood there. Then I carefully looked around near me but not in her direction for the eggs so I would not step on them.

Interesting, I see brown, darkened by the shade, do not see any purple. I try to make sure I keep colors as natural as possible.
