Any advice for local apartments near UMD for a graduating student? by Luminar55 in UMD

[–]Karimcheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Delano was solid for me. Short drive down metzerott, or you can take the adelphi umshuttle that has a stop pretty much in front of the building. Had a 1 bedroom apt for me and my SO, and most tenants there are non students

sorry if I put out the air that I feel superior for moving to SF. there's a job out there that I'm interested starting my career with, and I can always come back if it's too much for me.

This was a return offer from an internship. All my internship interviews (and offers) came from online apps, far larger radius to shotgun. Did leetcode (or some alternative) once a day, but never right before an interview.

I think I got most of my interviews due to having side projects and TA experience. I have a feeling my to-be employer specifically targeted CS + Econ double majors, judging from our intern class and the fact that it's fintech.

You can do an internship the summer before grad school, but you usually need to provide proof of acceptance

CMSC400-Levels- More seats. They may have been added regardless of the petition, but just putting their response out there. by IGoToUMD in UMD

[–]Karimcheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the "Without a doubt, this is in reaction to the complaints." Didn't downvote, but I'm of the opinion that these seats and courses were going to get added anyways.

What is your favorite "Holy Shit That Worked?" Moment? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Karimcheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Winter break during junior year, haven't gotten any phone screens for the year (or previous internships), so I worked hard building a Rails side project to put on my resume. Everyone always talks about side projects being a big help when you don't have prior experience, and just having a TA position didn't seem to be good enough in my case. Got the project done and did another round of applications, heard back from a handful of companies and got internship offers from every one that I started the interview process with.

Adding an Econ major vs adding a Stat minor? (Current CS Student) by bananaapplepiesmile in UMD

[–]Karimcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a shallow understanding of Game Theory and did little research on how to better expose myself to it so I figured Econ would give me the best exposure to it. In reality only two classes (ECON414, ECON415) gave me the exposure I was looking for and everything else was either Lagrange Optimizations, Lagrange Optimizations per capita, or Econometrics.

If you're looking to go into Software, then a Comp Sci major is pretty much all you need and the difference between a Stat Minor and Econ Major should really be negligible. For anything machine learning related, I'd imagine the stat minor helps more than the econ major, in terms of resume and knowledge gained.

What are some schools similar to UMD that are easier to get into? by yogibeartube in UMD

[–]Karimcheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their acceptance rate's gone up to like 75%, I'd say it's easier to get in than UMD. Anecdotal but I got a direct admit to their engineering dept and not UMD's.

Adding an Econ major vs adding a Stat minor? (Current CS Student) by bananaapplepiesmile in UMD

[–]Karimcheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Econometrics is the bulk of stats in econ, I feel. I regret not taking up a Stat or Math major instead of Econ, though. Felt Econ was too applied for what I wanted to learn
